Subject: Team3S: steering wheel radio controls

Has anyone ever had s problem with their steering wheel radio controls
losing ground. When the car is cold my radio control lights will go on
and off. If I pull up slightly on the bottom of the steering wheel they
will stay on, indicating it's losing ground somewhere. I've tightened
the screws holding the controls on and the wires are attached securely.
What grounds this setup?

Spark plugs and timing are separate issues, although related...  I'll
leave the specifics to the experts in such things.  Use our search
engine and look up 'spark plugs', then search 'timing' and you'll get a
whole education.  Most of our list discussions have been relative to
regapping plugs on the turbo machines for optimum performance with mods.
There's not much you can do with better plugs in the unmodded NT engines
other than gap them properly and disconnect the battery for 10 minutes
so the ECU can remap after they are installed.

More importantly, removing the resonator and installing a K&N FIPK (not
an aircharger) will give you an ~8-10  HP gain, in addition to being
healthier for your engine.  But installing any underdrive pulley (other
than the harmonically-damped version offered by Buscher) is suicidal, as
has been discussed before on the list, 'ad nauseum'.  It will give you
'maybe' a barely-noticeable 2-5 HP AND probably trash your engine, too,
unless it's balanced.  Cody posted an answer just two days ago (dig it
out of the Archive page for December 13) repeating this warning, and
quoting Jack T's primer on the subject.

Cancel the UDP (or order Buscher's, if you must), and order an FIPK;
...and be content with 230 HP.  Please be aware that even with all of
these mods, your car will be only marginally faster - don't be expecting
a huge performance gain...

There is what is called a clockspring inside there.

It is a fairly tedious thing to change out.  I believe you have to remove
the steering wheel (steering wheel puller needed)

I don't think there is much you can do to fix this, unless its a bad
connection to the device itself.  Other than that, call Tallahassee Mitsu to
find a replacement price fo the clock spring\

I was about to hit the list as well.

When I turn corners the button lights flicker.  The car doesn't have to be
cold although it is winter time now but even after an hour drive it does
this.

Note:  I'm posting this for Martin, who's having trouble posting...
- ------------------------------

Hi All,

Sorry for this second email with the same problem but I'm desperate.  If
my speed sensor is out and the ECU is not getting a pulse, will that
affect the performance of the car?

The reason I ask is that before the speedo died the car was awsome, but
since it has gone off, it stalls when approaching a junction (from
Speed) and
when accelerating it feels like its misfiring.  When cruising at, say,
60mph
and I ease back on the gas it feels lumpy, but also after driving at
speed
for a little while, the ECS lights will both flash together, but if I
switch
the car off, it will go back to normal until I drive at speed again.
Help.

Yup, just take the stock turbos out and drop the 15G's in.  Of course its
more involved than that, but that's the general idea.  Figure a full weekend
project to do it at home.

> Where do you buy 15Gs?
> How much do they cost?

From any of the 3/S speed shops.  GTPro, Altered Atmosphere, Dynamic Racing,
etc.  Cost is usually around $1800 and up.  For road racing like you do,
assuming you aren't going to run mega-boost, you can get them ported but not
clipped.  Clipping increases top-end horsepower a bit more by making the
turbo less of a restriction at the expense of spoolup ability.

> I already have Alamo intercoolers, 560cc injectors and a

> I need for the conversion?

Various gaskets and crush washers, but that's really about it.  You'll get a
good bit more horsepower on the top-end.  The big power hit the stock car
gets around 3500 RPM continues all the way to redline.

Sure, but if I had a faulty injector, it wouldn't matter what size it was.
I am also running stock injectors with 120 octane.  I see maybe 18-19 psi
for all of 1000 rpm, and mostly 14-16 psi (I just put the boost controller
at 90% duty set at 1.4 kg/cm2).  I have done this about 1/2 dozen weekends
about 6-10 runs each at 80,000 miles.  All I seem to do is ruin spark plugs.
I am not running bigger turbos yet mainly because I have not seen any really
good fuel computers that I can install myself.   I am not saying this is
good, but for what its worth, I have done it, and the car still can pull off
mid to high 12s with just BPU.
I have a set of 550cc injectors and a Supra pump sitting in my room
because that was what was suggested for 15gs.  Now, I am going to have to
reavaluate my plans.  Matt at Dynamic Racing told me he did not recommend
550cc for his GT357 magnums (I thought they were 15gs but they are not), but
if I could keep under 20psi, it would be okay.

You can advance/retard timing by adjusting the crank angle sensor.

Hello all,
I finally made up my mind in buying Porterfield cryogenically treated
rotors ($321 after shipping), KFP racing pads ($155 after shipping) and
Steel braided break lines from Carparts ($175 after shipping).  Thank you
everybody for all the info and sources to get the stuff for excellent
prices.

I only have 2 last things to buy, a BOV Greddy Type S for about $255 plus
shipping and the lowering springs.  At Carpart.com I found Eibach Pro Kit
for $180 after discount, so I figured might as well buy them now while I
am at it.  The only problem is they have no spring ratings, and I always
heard you guys talk about different firmness of springs.  Anyways, I am
not going to do road courses, I just want the car lowered some and have
somewhat better handling.  Is this a good choice???  Thanks again for
everything, and I will let you guys know how things work out.

Hey Rich,
I am in the process of upgrading my turbos right now and I think the
Magnum 357s are the best bolt on turbo for our car.  I have looked around
and talked to some people and the Magnum out flows the 15g and suposedly the
17g turbos.  Give Brian a call at GTPro the number is 1-626-839-7767. I
talked to him for about 20 minutes today he is very informative and sure
knows what he is talking about.

One more question....Would you all recommend the 1.2/1.2 inch drop
or the 1.5/1.3 drop.  Any suggestions welcome.  Thank!!

I highly doubt there would be much of a discount, if any over any other
discounts we already get.

The alternatives to the Eibach springs is of course the Intrax springs
(tried and true on the 3000GT by myself and others)
Personally, I would go as low as possible... our cars sit forever off the
ground, with horrid fender gap...  It is your choice though...

To answer the other question brought up - the drop in replacements come only
in certain sprng rates - if you want custom spring rates, you will have to
go with the Ground Control setup for about $400...  It is also adjustable in
height though...

- -Cody

PS - Bob mentioned that some people may have difficulties in certain
driveways, etc. etc. with ANY lowering kit and thus the Intrax being worse
than the Eibach's...  I admit - I have to e careful, but to me it is well
worth it...  Its just a matter of being a little more careful on speed bumps
and driveways.

You have to use the service manuals in conjunction with the CAPS program.

You find the picture and the number in the service manual, and then enter it
into the CAPS program...

First double click on model and select 3000GT for 3S cars and the
model (Z16 for AWS), but other Mitsu makes are available. Then double
click on Illustration and select "22" for manual transmission (double
click on or near that number). You can zoom in on the illustration
using the icons on the menu bar. Now select 22-110 (double click on
or near that number). Item 81337 is the speedo gear. Double click on
that number and a list of gears pops up for you to select. MR111502
is the 28/36 gear currently used on our cars. MB811064 was the
original 27/36 gear.

I just replaced this gear recently and will have a web page for this
soon. The gear is pinned into the assembly that holds it onto the
transfer case. You will have to knock this pin out and then tap it
back in after replaceing the gear. Don't forget to put the little
square pin back in when you are finished, otherwise the speedo will
be "dead".
