Subject: Team3S: help tuning my car

This isn't a war story, but I had an RX7 pull up next to me that was
completely stock outside of an exhaust and an intake.  No boost
controller.  No modified turbo.  Nothing other than the exhaust and
intake.  Now, with that said, how is it that I couldn't beat this car?
Considering the fact that with my set up I should be in the 500hp
range.  I noticed lately that my car (since I added these mods) is not
as fast as it was before I altered the fuel management system.  If there
is anyone out there that can help me tune my car properly, please, I
need your advice.

Thanks,

Boris

Subject: Team3S: Anybody want a 92 TT?

I'm Ken Latta, a new member on this list. Mikael Kenson was kind enough to send
me a welcome message this morning. I hope the remark about shooting deserters
was indeed in jest, because that's what I'm here to do. I guess I should
explain. I have two great cars and one of them has got to go. It's a question
of money. It has been a difficult decision, but I've chosen to keep the '64
Dart GT and sell the '92 Stealth R/T TT. I guess it better suits an old fart
like me.

Much to my amazement, people have not been lining up at the door to buy it. So,
I figured maybe I should put the word out to people who already adore the car.
If you or anyone you know has a hankering to buy one, IMHO this is one to jump
on.

I'm the second owner, the first was a Santa Cruz, California shopkeeper. He
apparently didn't have much time to drive it and I usually drive the Dart, so
it has just crossed the 100k mile mark. By far the worst blemish is a chip in
one rim. Undoubtedly the handiwork of an incompitent tire wrangler. It was
recently smogged and more recently a datalogger said all sensors are working
fine. The TPS and idle switch were also checked. It's pearl white with red
leather interior.

We're located about 100 miles south of San Francisco, about 50 from San Jose.
I'm asking $8800. There are some pictures of it at this URL. Unless, you've got
a fast link, they will take awhile to load.

I went to start my car today and I noticed a strange noise from the
engine. It is hard to describe but it sounds like its coming from the
crank area on the belt side of the engine. Its a fluttering noise that
seems to fade in and out but is always there. I think it may be a crank
bearing. The car still runs smooth and oil pressure is fine. Any ideas?

Does anybody know a web site that has a comprehensive list of aftermarket
17" wheels that fit the 1st gen VR-4?
I know i'm going to have to spend at least 350 per wheel, but want more
options than the Volk TE-37 (which is the only one anybody can tell me YES,
it fits) I've been through archives and found nothing. Anybody have pics of
the wheels you are using?

Thanks,

Discount Tire has an interactive guide that will put the wheels "on"
your car that are available for it. It even changes the diameter for
17" vs. 18". The Dodge Stealth picture they use is a little funky
(and 2nd gen), yet I was still able to decide on a few upgrade
choices (for my 1st gen TT). If I remember, there were maybe 2 dozen
choices. These are not all the choices available, but it is a start.

http://www.discounttire.com/wheelSearch.html

Tirerack has something similar: http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp .

GT Autosports sells "Japanese" wheels and has pictures at this url.

http://www.gtautosports.com/whelspok.htm

You will probably have to call them for fitment. Expect to pay $500+
each for some of these.

I list dozens of sources for wheels and tires on the huge Links Page
at my web site.

Must the intake manifold (as opposed to just the plenum) be removed

Manual seems to claim it must. I can't figure out why. Anyone done this ?

Anyone ever replace the rear camshaft seals or end caps ? Any need to ?

Looking to replace everything reasonable at 60K service.

Should I buy any 15g upgrade I can afford, or are there any recommendations.

It was 90 degrees.  The wheel was turned slightly into the curb, while the
car was sideways to the curb.  It pushed the bead into the tire about 1".

Who says it has 500 h.p.?  I know this sounds sort of like a flame, but
please do not take it as such.  I keep seeing numbers thrown around for our
cars which are based on nothing but guesses.  Then occasionally, a person
gets dynoed that should have close to 600h.p. and it ends up they are short
by like 150h.p..  I personally drag raced an individual (fellow 3sr) who had
every mod a shop could install, and I was beat consistantly by only 2/10s of
a second when I only had a filter and B.C. and d.p..  A car like ours needs
to be tuned on a dyno with special equipment to make sure you are at
optimal.  What fuel/air management are you using?  Is this piggyback
equipment or an all out stand alone system?  If you are tuning on your own,
you need a datalogger at least to know where your tuning is off.

Exactly right!  My deductible is $1000, and since the damage was a little
less, I have to pick up the bill.  I ended up buying from discount tire
4-18"x9"Enkei RPo-1s with Nitto 555
tires 245/40 front and 275/35 rear.  The rims weigh 17lbs each.  They are
pretty ugly IMHO, but there seems to be few rims that fit, and even less
that are light and look good.  They will come mounted and balanced with lugs
for  $1800.  I think that should drop my weight by almost 100lbs.

Hi again,

Apart from ME-TOOS I didnt get any response last month when I asked
about
the parking/side light question included below.

Is there anyone in the UK on this list?  Can you tell me which lights
are
used for "side" lights on the UK '93 3000GT ?  I'm guessing it's the
"optical horn"
- -- the light that comes on when you "flash" the headlights.

If anyone has the UK manual and could check the circuit diagram, I'd be
very greatful.

Thanks,

Everyone,

Forget the last post.  I found the info five minutes later in the Electric
manual for Mitsu (pg. 522 of 738).  For those that care:

Indicator mph Allowable range mph
20 19-22
40 38-44
60 57-66
80 76-88
100 94-110

Team,

A while ago I noticed on the 3S CD the error in the speedometer for my 2nd
gen VR4.  I have spent 1 hour looking for that same error and can't find it
again.

Can anyone point me to the right page?

It said something like this:

At 70 mph the possible error in the speedometer can be 62-78 mph.  You guys
get the idea.  There was a table for various speeds.

Subject: Team3S: Clutch slip?

I just got a new clutch installed with my engine rebuild.  The clutch
that came in the car when I bought it was slipping bad under hard
acceleration.  The new clutch is starting to slip a little already
under hard acceleration in 3rd and 4th.  Is it normal to expect a
little slip from the stock clutch, or do I need to drive back over to
the dealer and find out what they did wrong?

I believe I read that our stock clutch was good up to around 400HP,
and with my car being for all intents and purposes bone stock, it
makes me wonder if I'm either A) getting more boost than I should or
B) have a crappy clutch.

I hope I'm not getting too much boost.  I hope to have a boost gauge
in by this coming weekend...
