Terminology and Notes of Interest
ABS - Antilock Braking System
-
Because the car employs AWD (see below), a two-phase ABS
is required (a three-phase system would result in severe vibration and
stress in the drivetrain). While the speed of all four wheels is
monitored independently, braking action occurs for at least two wheels
simultaneously. This is a fail-safe system; the three stage hydraulic
valving defaults to normal non-ABS braking even when the ABS system is
malfunctioning.
-
The system consists of wheel speed sensors, proportioning
valves (left-right and front-back), hydraulic unit and the electronic control
unit. The front brakes are rigid four-piston calipers squeezing 314mm vented rotors, while the rear brakes are rigid two-piston calipers.
AES - Active Exhaust System
-
Low-restriction performance exhaust systems are typically
louder than normal exhaust systems. The AES feature allows the driver
to make the exhaust note quieter when desired via a switch in the cockpit.
-
When the AES switch is in Sport mode, the green AES dash
indicator will not be illuminated. The exhaust valving is such that
the exhaust system is in its lowest restriction mode.
-
When the AES switch is in Tour mode, the green AES dash indicator
will be illuminated. The exhaust valving is such that the exhaust
system is muffling the exhaust as much as possible. Above 3500 RPM,
the ECU will automatically change the valving to normal, low-restriction
mode for better performance.
-
The system consists of a special dual-chamber muffler, exhaust
valve, valve actuator, engine speed sensor and the electronic control unit.
ASC - Automatic Speed Control
AWD - All Wheel Drive
-
The full-time AWD system distributes power among all four
wheels, the transfer case splitting torque 45% front and 55% rear.
A limited slip differential in the rear differential provides additional
traction even in the most severe situations.
AWS - All Wheel Steering
-
The AWS setup is a hydraulically actuated same-phase system,
that is the rear wheels rotate in the same direction as the front wheels.
Active only above 31 miles per hour, the maximum deflection of the wheels
is approximately 1.5 degrees and depends on vehicle speed and steering.
ECS - Electronic Control Suspension
-
The ECS system automatically manipulates the suspension at
each wheel independently to control roll, squat and dive and to compensate
for various road conditions. Automatic control can also be overridden
via the ECS button in the cockpit; in Sport mode, the suspension is locked
into its firmest setting.
-
The system consists of a G-Force sensor, steering angular
velocity sensor, throttle position sensor, vehicle speed sensor and electronic
control unit.
-
If a fault is detected by the suspension controller, the Tour and Sport lights will flash.

FAAC - Full Auto Air Conditioning
-
The FAAC system is a fire and forget system with manual override.
In Auto mode, the system will control air source and flow speed and direction
to achieve and maintain the set temperature. For example, in the
winter when the engine is cold, the system will recirculate interior air
at the windshield until the engine warms up; then direct warm interior
air at the feet, until desired temperature is reached; finally, it will
switch to outside air and trickle fresh air from the dash while continuing
to blow warm air at the feet. In warm weather, the system will also
automatically use the air conditioning system when appropriate (based on
inputs from the temperature and solar sensors).
-
The system consists of a temperature sensor, solar sensor,
air conditioning unit, heater unit, duct valving and climate control unit.
SRS - Supplemental Restraint System
-
The SRS is designed so that the air bags will deploy when
the safing sensor, plus either or both of the left front and right front
impact seonsors simultaneously activate while the ignition is in the ON
position.
-
The SRS consists to two airbags, two impact sensors and the
electronic diagnosis unit with integrated safing impact sensor.
