Subject: Team3S: Electrical Short, please help

I have an electrical short on my 1994 VR-4 and need some help with ideas to

find it.

Currently I am measuring 4.7 Ohms across the battery terminals.  I remove

the 40Amp Batt fuse from the junction box in the engine bay and the short

goes away.  I removed all the fuses and relays one at a time and the short

did not go away.  The car had an aftermarket alarm system that did not work

so I removed it, but car still started after removale.  I installed an

aftermarket fuel pressure sensor and car cranked over when I ran pressure

out of fuel line.  After sensor install I now have the short and can't crank

car over.  I also replaced the starter, old one tested bad at auto parts

store.  Now car will not crank and have short.  I must have mucked something

up but can't find it.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

Ok, after I re-installed tranny, transfer case and turbos the car will not start. If I bridge

directly to the starter motor it turns fine and car will start. Also if I bridge to the starter

motor connection that sits under the MAS it will turn over as well, so it isn't the wiring going to

the starter motor. I unplugged the clutch sensor, so it isn't that. I also checked the alarm to make

sure that the alarm wasn't stopping cranking. What else could it be? I'm tired of having to bridge

my starter motor to get it started

There are 2 older stereo's that are compatible with the stock CD changer. I

know that one of them is a Pioneer Super Tuner. My suggestion would be to go

MP3, single disc in-dash, or if you must have the changer get a newer

changer and head unit. The older head units that will be compatible are very

out of date and won't offer half of the features as a newer Alpine, etc.

I know most the people on here wouldn't come close to being interested

in this car, figured I'd at least put it out there...

Well, As I have tired of this car, it is time to sell... I am asking 7K,

OBO, and I am willing to negotiate.

I am selling as is, but would be willing to work with buyer on fixing

misc things, or upgrades.

Here's the link...

It's really quite a fun car to drive, attracts tons of attention, is

moderately "quick" - pulls stock Mustang GT's, even off the line, but my

focus is on my other car currently, so this one needs to go... At one

time I had intentions on turning it into an Auto-cross car for fun, but

again, my other car has consumed all my resources, and drag racing has

overtaken other forms of racing currently...

Would ~consider~ a trade, even up, but I am not looking for a sports

car... This car has served as a daily driver for over a year with no

major problems, it has a JDM motor replaced 20K ago, and tons of other

nice upgrades... Will consider all serious offers.

Let me know if you or a friend are interested...

Local here in San Antonio, would deliver to Austin or Houston if needed,

Dallas could meet halfway...

All sales final, car is sold as is.

So that I am not chasing a ghost, can someone measure the resistance from

the positive battery terminal (with terminal removed of course) to their

intake plenum?

I am thinking it should be around 22K ohms, mine is only 4 ohms.

Thanks

The intake plenum is grounded via the ground strap at the rear to the

firewall, so by measuring resistance between positive battery cable and

plenum, you are indirectly measuring resistance between positive cable and

ground.

And yes, that value should be far greater then 4 ohms.  4 ohms would draw 3

amps from the battery (if I remember ohm's law correctly)

Glenn's memory of ohm's law is correct.  V=IR or I=V/R.

4 ohms from your plenum to positive of the battery is way off. The

grounding strap on the back of the plenum should ground the whole piece, so

you definitely have something strange going on there.

Not sure about the SRS light, but the parking brake light can come on if

your brake fluid is low.  Especially when you're at WOT and the level of in

the reseviour (spelling, argh) changes just enough to cause it to flash

momentarily.

Does the SRS light come on momentarily and then go off too, or did it come on and stay on?

Does the SRS light come on when the battery dies or take the battery out?

If yes,  then after the 10th or so time of starting the car, this light goes

off.

Brake light is because the brake fluid is low.

Seems to me the low resistance might indicate the starter wires are

reversed or

incorrect. Someone posted not too long ago that it is easy to cross

them.
