point is that "Brakes are no substitute for learning."  Agreed, though I
maintain that better brakes increase the safety margin; self control, not
mechanical failure, should be the limiting factor.  The point I was making was
that faster laps times can be achieved by slowing down more effectively, hence
the relevance of better brakes in the context of the original topic: that BMW
may well not have won without the StopTech upgrade!

[I'm copying this to the Team3S Main List, since it has to do with the tech
topic of brake upgrades...]

Hey, Jim,

Faster lap times CAN be achieved by slowing down more effectively.  But the
two StopTech-equipped BMWs were among the *slowest* cars in both fields that
they ran - E0 Class and E2 Class.  The numbers tell the tale...

Sponsorship is an important tool for the race team, since it allows you to
afford the parts you couldn't otherwise.  And if you do well, the sponsor can
claim that it was because of their product.  That StopTech-equipped 328is won
in the E0 Class because it completed more laps - because there were fewer
mechanical failures and pit time than the other cars.  It had nothing to do
with having StopTechs - it had to do with the 4 other FASTER cars in that
class failing to complete as many laps as they did!  (The Arizona Mafia M3 was
one second faster per lap, and *both* the Silicon Valley 328 and the NN Racing
Civic Si were THREE seconds faster - PER lap!)  But that's what an Enduro is
about - outlasting your opponent, and once you win, you can claim anything you
want about why you won (whether it's true or not).  You certainly didn't see
StopTech bragging that the OTHER Bullet Motorsports 328 that ran with their
brakes in our E2 class was TWO seconds slower than our Team3S car - PER LAP!
On our stock brakes!  But all that counts is that they finished in 11th place,
ahead of our 13th place, since we had more pit time (due to our inexperience).
We didn't have to change our brakes, either!  Having good brakes is important,
as is every other system in every car.  But if having StopTechs made their
cars faster than *anyone* in those classes, then the numbers would show it.
The numbers show the opposite - their entry in the E0 class was the 5th
fastest car (out of 8 cars!?!), and their entry in our E2 class was the
15th(!) fastest car.  (In comparison, Team3S was 9th fastest).  So much for
the "superiority" of StopTech brakes in cutting down lap times...  Official
transponder fastest lap times for the 8 cars in E0 Class are below.  Read 'em
and weep.

Ah..., the power of advertising...  (sigh)  :-)

brake/speed/time -

JPM "Da Bloke with Da Coke" told me that the less you brake the faster
you....im not sure (as JPM and i were REALLY coked up at the time) but i
recall it having something to do with physics, time, motion, quarks,
blackholes, probably some type of brilliant english engineering, HillaryC
and how many jelly beans are in a 32oz mayo jar.

Subject: Team3S: Redline MT-90 in the rear differential

A shop that I took my car to filled it up with MTL in trans+transfer case
and MT-90 in the rear differential.  I told them it was the wrong stuff in
the diff, so they said they wouldn't charge me for the differential portion
of the service.  So... now what?  I have a barrel of standard (not redline)
GL-5 which I could just put in there by myself.  Or I could go buy some
redline GL-5.  Can I just leave it in there for awhile, or would that cause
rapid wear?  I'm going to the mountains to ski within a week or two, So I'm
slightly concerned that mixing cold weather and a thick transmission oil
(where a GL-5 gear oil is specified) is not a good thing.  Well, of course
it's not a good thing.  But should I change the oil _tomorrow_? Or more like
in a thousand miles or so, when I'll be underneath my car to change my
engine oil anyway.

The old racers adage is "don't brake, it only slows you down" has some validity
depending on the type of car you drive and the track. If you're running a 100 hp in
a 3000 pound car keeping your speed up is critical since it could take 10+ seconds
to get back up to speed --- or in the case of NASCAR at a restrictor plate event at
least a lap to get back up to speed. A F1 car on the other hand can accelerate at rates
that allow more aggressive braking.

I was reading in one of the driving books that showroom stock requires maintaining
higher speeds into the corner --- near constant cornering speeds. They lack brakes
and acceleration so any speed removed can cause brake problems and acceleration
problems.

Subject: Team3S: Daily Driver Brakes

Hi All,

On a very different note from all the upgraded track brakes, I just need to
replace the pads on my daily driver.  I never do any track racing, and don't
even race it in town, though I do enjoy getting up to speed and cutting
through traffic!

Mitu wants $190 to replace the pads and machine the rotors.  Is there any
reason why I should take it to them over someone who is half that price and
specializes in brakes?

Thanks!

I need a tow vehicle for my 94 VR4.
Car and trailer are probably pushing 5,000 lb.

Pickup trucks and yuppie station wagons (SUVs) are not an option. The wife
refuses to have one in the driveway.

Whaddaya think of these?

Anything else? Gotta be cool.
