Subject: Re: Amsoil, Moil 1, Redline (Re: Team3S: Oil flap and when
to change. A personal look.)
Although Amsoil "claims" to spend their dollars on R&D instead of
advertising,
that's BOGUS, since they spent *tons* of money setting up hundreds of
phoney
"test lab" websites in other names ("xxx Institute" and "zzz Labs",
etc...).
All of which sites describe Amsoil as superior, and extolling the virtues
of
Amsoil products. If that weren't enough, their well-known MLM scheme
is about
as low as it gets. EVEN IF they had a reasonable-quality product, I
would
never buy Amsoil, just for those reasons. A good product doesn't NEED
to be
sneaky, only BAD products need to use deception to sell...
I'm sure that there might be products that can protect our engines as well
as
Mobil-1, but since it is a "known quantity" to me, I have no intention
to
switch to anything else. My '94 Stealth NT engine got trashed this
year...,
when some moron greasemonkey mis-threaded my oil filter, and all my oil
leaked
out. By the time we saw the oil pressure gauge drop, it was too late,
and it
threw a rod. When switching out the blown engine, my shop guy told
me, "It's
such a shame to have lost that engine - the cylinder walls looked
like
mirrors. It was perfect!". That engine only had ~40,000 miles
on it, but
over 30,000+ miles were from racing at 6000+ rpm! Since the engine
was a
non-turbo - underpowered for the track, we ran it at redline for 30,000
miles.
And it was perfect. Our oil was Mobil-1 10W-30 for all but the first
1,000
miles of engine break-in. I will never use anything else.

Subject: Team3S: stereo and plug help
I need to replace my speakers (been through the search page and going for
the Infinity Kappa's and JBL GTO 220's) but also thinking of replacing the stock
Mitsubishi stereo, 2 x single din, any advice on this would be appreciated. I
have checked under the passenger's seat and do not have an amplifier. My
question to the list is can anyone tell me what does the white female (3 square
pin) plug do that is just protruding out of the harness under the passengers
seat. The 3 wires to it are colored 'black', 'green' and 'green/yellow'.
Remember guys this is a Middle East specs car and although I have searched
through the manual (for U.S. spec cars) I cannot find this plug anywhere. In
case you're interested there are a couple of interior and exterior pics

I am currently installing a Sony CDX-M800. It will replace the factory
radio in the upper single DIN opening ('92 TT). Eventually I will install my
S-AFCII (black/black spec ed) in the lower single DIN opening. Until then I am
putting the factory optional accessory box in the lower opening (don't have PN
handy but there will be a web page about all this in a week or two).
Surprisingly the CDX-M800 head unit bolts right to the factory brackets in
the correct location. The Sony trim piece also fits perfect over the factory
radio trim piece. I would guess many other aftermarket HUs will mount just as
easily. For the wiring, I am using the adapter harness plugs from Scosche (from
Sound Domain and other sources) and the
www.installdr.com wiring identifications.
Will splice/solder/shrink tube the wires from the Sony and the Scosche harnesses
together and then the HU will just plug into the factory harness.

Well on my car it is for the seat belt switch. Lets the warning circuit
know if the passenger has fastened the seat belt or not.

I think it's for the seatbelt sensor for the pass seat, ...right?
As for the stereo... You'll get better mid-bass response from
Infinity's
Reference series, rather than the kappas. Kappas really need a
pro
install(kick panels, high power amp) to sound their best. Realize to
do the
JBL's the right way, you're going to want to rewire them as they pick up
a
lot of alternator whine on the stock wires. Also to do the tweets the
right
way - you'll need a 4 channel amp for the door/rear speakers and then
you
can run the tweets off whatever head unit you purchase.
I created a 3/S Stereo FAQ site with a bunch of useful links here:
...and am currently in the process of writing a complete 3/S
dedicated
stereo install website (similar to the 222hp stereo website, but a
little
different) -- (if you haven't seen that site, search for "222hp
stereo" on
yahoo and you'll see what I mean).
If you have any more specific questions feel free to email me, or
better
yet, post in the Audio Forum on 3SI.org

Hello all,
To any of you out there that were wondering if the hi-flow
cats can
pass emissions, I can now say that they do. I installed the 3SX custom
downpipe, RT hi-flow cat, and Borla exhaust over the past weekend. She
passed with flying colors. Sounds great too.

Did you install the baffles in the Borla (apparently available from
customer
service) to eliminate the annoying resonance at cruising RPMs? I'm
curious
to know if they're really effective. Anyone else out there with
experience?

I installed the venturis in my Borla exhaust and it seems to have made it
a
little quieter, but not much. It still drones on the highway.

No, I did not install the baffles. So far I do not think that they are
needed, but I have not driven the car at or above 60 for long
duration's.
I will know more after the thanksgiving road trip.

Subject: Team3S: Racing? Sometimes people just enjoy their cars....
I just want to clarify that I do not race my car, I enjoy it as a
personal
transportation car with alot of class. I tend to see mostly racers in
this
group but I won't hold that against you
A question was posed as to where I had my dual filter setup mounted
since
the engine compartment leaves very little room for such things.
I have a K&N FIPK installed. Besides letting it breath a bit better
(and we
all like to breath) it eliminates alot of stuff in front of the battery.
I
fabricated a piece of 1/4 X 3" flatbar with a bend to put the filter
brackets upright and bolted it to the right fender well in front of
the
battery. The hoses go behind the slushbox to the filter adapter on
the
engine.
Also, 20 bucks a year for a preferred customer rating at Amsoil lets me
get
their products at dealer cost not retail cost. So the oil and filters
are
not as expensive as one might think.
As I have nothing to "sell" or promote this is again, a personal
look.

Keith,
I did the same as you by getting the prefered customer rating with
Amsoil.
I like their products, use it in all of my vehicles (except the F-250
PowerStroke, 3 1/2 gallons!) and get the discounted prices. Their
typical
synthetic that we would use in our Stealth/3000gt's costs about the same
as
Mobil 1, maybe a little less.
I DON'T like the MLM way of marketing that they employ. Reminds me of
a
bunch of rabid Tupperware dealers.

Subject: Re: Amsoil, Moil 1, Redline (Re: Team3S: Oil flap and when

Yeah, that MLM marketing is the main deterrent for me too. The whole
purpose of a word of mouth MLM campaign is to distort and exaggerate the
facts. The MLM scheme, which could be a very effective way of marketing for
a small young company, certainly does not add any credibility to a company
that Amsoil has become. Amsoil won't get sued for what their "dealers" say
about their products, so there is no limit as to what they would say.
It certainly feels bad when you know that they are there trying to organize
thousands of their dealers to fool you. What remains unknown is if Amsoil
is indeed a good product or just an MLM-enhanced mediocre stuff. I like
trying new things, but when I have that feeling that there is a remote
chance that I may be being fooled, it turns out to be accurate more often
than nine times out of 10.

It's a spiritual thing. You know, out with the old, in with the new

I'm sure that there is plenty of documentation proving that you can go
for
many more miles without changing the oil by using Amsoil. Just can't

Subject: Team3S: Shudder on Acceleration Resolved
Hi folks,
Thanks for all the suggestions. My car has been *well* inspected!!
The problem turned out to be in the front left axle. I'm not up on all the
components, so please forgive/correct me as required as I relate what the
mechanic told me.
The outer half of the axle floats within the inner half, which is attached
to the frame. There is a C clip holding the outer axle in place. This C
clip was damaged/corroded, and let the outer axle move out a bit. The
splines on the axle were bent at the end; these were ground away so the
axle would fit back into the inner axle. Rides fine now.
Does this make sense to you?
Again, thanks for all the assistance.

Subject: Team3S: Transfer Case Recall II
More Transfer Case Problems:
Hi,
I went in to the dealer to have them check my transfer case. They
said they
had to clean it up, change and refill the fluids, and to come back and
let
them check for leaks later. Now I am having trouble putting my car
into
reverse after it sits overnight. REAL trouble, like it takes 2-3
minutes to
get out of the garage. At first it just won't go into reverse at all,
then
eventually it will go, but pops out after I move a few inches, then after
a
few more attempts, a few more pop-outs, it finally goes into reverse and
I
can get out of the garage. No noticeable problem in any other gears,
nor
does reverse give me more problems after the car warms up.
OK, two easy fixes:
1) Back in to the driveway when I get home at night so I can pull forward
in
the morning, or
2) Just go back to the dealer NOW.
Seriously, I am headed back to the dealer, but any ideas beforehand?
Do
they do anything in the "inspection" phase that might have caused
this?
Thanks!

Subject: Re: Team3S: Transfer Case Recall II
Sounds like the shift linkage is hitting the lower radiator hose. I
dunno
what the dealer could possibly have done to screw that up whilst
checking
the transfer case, but with dealers ya never know. Even if they took the
T
case completely out of the car, they shouldn't have screwed with the
linkage or rad hose.
The reason it works after the car warms up is that the hose gets hot
and
flexible.
Check this: When it's cold, do you also have trouble putting it into
2nd,
4th, and 6th? It will feel spongy, like it wants to bounce out. If it's
the
hose, the farther you go to the right (2-4-6-R), the spongier it'll
get.
The cure is to pull the MAF and the air cleaner, then tie wrap the hose
out
of the way. In my case, we put the hose on backward, and it stuck out
and
blocked the shifter.
If it is the hose, ask the dealer WTF they were doing messing with your
rad
hose? This oughta be good.

Yet another indication why I think the best advice given to the guy earlier
this week who asked what to do about the recall if his transfer case was not
leaking was to not take it in. Dealers just have a way of screwing things
up. I took one of my cars in one time to get the wiper blades changed (I
got them for free under warranty), and when I pulled out of the dealership, my
speedometer didn't work. Turned out the "mechanic" accidentally unplugged
the vehicle speed sensor (which is attached to the tranny). To this day,
I'm left wondering why the heck he was screwing around under the hood when all I
asked him to do was install some wiper refills.

I just keep it in an email file and copy it into CAPS --- a right click and
copy
then a control v when in CAPS is all it takes.
FWIW --- F2 takes you back to your starting screen if you have a PNC
number
highlighted.
If you have a part number and want to see where it comes from then
enter the part number do an F10 then select the PNC number and hit
F2. This doesn't work all the time but it usually does -- I'm not sure
what
the problem is, maybe a replacement part number.
