The names are way too close to exist peacefully in the market.

Subject: Team3S: Help, backfire intermittant spark.

I have a '92 VR4 with aprox 130,000 miles on it. A short time ago I started
to get an intermittant miss on one cylinder. This resulted in a fouled plug
on that cylinder. I could replace that plug but it would occur again in a
few hundred miles.

I had put Accell super coils on the car before this problem came up but was
thinking that that might be my problem. I changed back to the original coil
pack a couple days ago and then the car started to backfire and really run
like shit. I had to advance the timing as far as the CAS will go in order to
keep it from backfiring at idle. As soon as any load is put on the engine it
will backfire intermittently.

I finally put the timing light on one plug wire at a time and noticed that
the spark is very erratic on all 6 wires. I'm thinking CAS but am looking
for some 2nd opinions. I tried to pull codes but get nothing but short
pulses like there is nothing to pull.

Help me before I go mad, mad I say..... WHAHAHAHAAAA

Hmmmm --- not sure how the pipe is measured but, I just bought a downpipe
from 3SX and it has two  2 1/2" tubes to a 3" pipe and it comes with the 7004
gasket. The gasket has a 2 5/8" opening which is the same as the cat but
smaller than the 3" downpipe. It looks like I'll have to talk to 3sx about gaskets,
while the  downpipe has a 3" opening it's reduced to 2 1/2" at the gasket.

I have some 3" collector gaskets for my truck but they're the three bolt type.
They should be available at any good parts store.

yup, you're right. I was going by the gasket that 3SX sent me with their downpipe.
It's the7004 which is the main cat gasket and is a restriction for a 3" downpipe.
Looks like a call to Steve is in order.

Yea, if anyone finds 2 hole 3" gaskets, or better yet flanges PLEASE let me
know. They do not exist (I don't know where the heck Stillen gets theirs).
Good luck getting any from Steve :) But I have gone as far as having the
flanges custom manufactures, and its just too expensive at $7.50/ea. Don't
know if many of you remember, but I used to run an exhaust shop
www.tyspeedperformance.com I got custom made flanges and put out about a
dozen of my pipes, which showed a 30+HP gain. I get requests to this day but
with virtually no profit margin due in large part to the flanges, its not
worth my time.

If anyone finds these flanges, major kudos to you...

Tyson

Interesting --- so the 3" down pipe is really going to be whatever the gasket is.

It'll be interesting to see what /steve has to say --- without a gasket it's kind of
useless.

Running a stock cat with a larger exhaust system is what's going to hurt you
the most.  You should get a high-flow 3" cat to match the rest of your
system (assuming you have a 3" cat-back to go with the 3" downpipe), and
then use proper 3" gaskets.

Road/Race Engineering has 3" flanges (although for $12 each) and 3" gaskets
with 4-3/16" stud spacing ($10 each).  Expensive, but there they are (along
with lots of other goodies in their DIY section).

I'm pretty sure I got my 3" gaskets from Jeg's, but I'm having a hard time
finding them with their search engine.  They are a thick highly-dense
cotton-like material with an aluminum compression ring that work great if
the flanges don't fit exactly right (like on my damn Alamo downpipe).

If you need "regular" 3" gaskets, the local Ford dealer should have some
that work.  I believe they used them for catalytic converter gaskets on
their early 90's Mustangs.

Matt --- good information, thanks.

I'll be running a 3" test pipe with an electric cutout [ for track use only of course ].
I have guy that's going to build me a 3" cat back although I haven't defined the
layout yet.
