RE: Team3S: Window Regulator and e-01
Tallahassee Mitsubishi has a much better price on the regulator. I think
I
paid $125 for mine. Do not forget to get your team3s discount.
As for the install, it was a no-brainer. Thirty minutes tops for the
removal
and installation. Make sure you have someone who can help you by
holding up
the window while you do the work.

The install takes around an hour, if you follow the directions in the
manual.
I used gaffer tape to hold the window up while I was working on it
(taped to
an old photo boom stand), but it's even easier if a friend is
handy. It
should cost you much less than $250 for the part. Just
email a few of the
"Good Guys" dealers listed on our website to get
prices. Makes sure you ask
for the Team3S discount... Most of the
dealers give us 20-25%. I think I got
an even higher discount than that
for the regulator from either Conicelli or
San Rafael Mitsu (can't
remember). It was around $150, including shipping, no
tax,
IIRC...

Having just replaced a Getrag on jackstands (grrrrr...may Mitsu
designers
rot in hell), I am convinced that I need to build a garage with a
lift.
Local contractors want about $8K to build a 2.5 car garage, with
slab,
electrical, etc.
I figure there must be a cool design somewhere for a 2.5 car garage with
a
lift. Got any ideas?
What kind of lift? The lift in Autoweek, where you drive on, or the
kind
that comes in from the side with arms? Whaddaya think for our cars?
How much? $2K for a lift? More?
When I can't drive fast no more and don't need race cars (no
snotty
comments, Berry), I'd like to start collecting cars (a 64 GTO would be
my
first), so the garage needs to do car storage duty eventually. That
argues
for the Autoweek lift, cuz it holds two cars. My buddies say a side
lift,
when lowered to its hard stops, can also store a car
indefinitely.
All comments welcome.
I am still waiting for the money tree in the backyard to bloom, but
it
doesn't hurt to think ahead, eh? It might bloom tomorrow. Ya never know
in
my business.
(This is on topic, I figger, cuz the garage will be used to fix 3000GTs
for
me and my support group, The Stealth Boys, here in Cedar Rapids.)

Team3S: Are Garages off topic?
Geoff has a full-car scissor lift that does 4(?) tons in his garage, and
I
think it only cost him ~$700(?), but certainly not $2k. Compressed
air tank
runs it, and it picked up my car like it was a pillow, and held it
good and
solid. But I think it will only lift 2'-3' or so. Good
for now, and as a
second lift once you get your garage built. I don't
know about the Autoweek
one. But I sure am envious - I don't even get a
garage with a loft apartment,
so I can't even dream of such things.
;-( A lift - how cool is that!?!
FYI, as advertised, the Team3S Main
List is about 3S-related "maintenance and
mods, repairs and racing", so this
is muchly "on-topic". The Team3S Racers
List is about *anything*
car-related, and then some... It's free-form, chat
is allowed, and we
don't have a Digest version of it (nor do we Archive it),
so you don't even
have to "trim your posts" of garbage when you reply there,
like you do on the
Main list... Note how neatly-trimmed your post is above,
RICH ("the
offender"). :-)

If it's the Snap-on one I saw in a few pictures it's gotta be more than
$700.
Snap-on sells a set of wrenches for $700 --- now Geoff may have
paid
someone $700 to steal one for him but you can only get a set of jack
stands
for $700 from Snap-on.
No doubt Geoff'll fill us in.
I would think a used lift could be had for $1000 to $1500.
Note to Rich --- If you'd come out to Laguna Seca in November we could
find
out how fast you really are --- no fair telling how fast you think you
are.

Team3S: Re: 3S-Racers: Are Garages off topic?
$8K seems like a damned good price, Rich. What size is a 2.5 car
garage??
A couple of years ago, I built my garage, 24x24, with a side-post lift
in
it. It didn't cost much more to make the first story ten feet tall
so that
I could fit the lift and store three cars in it - maybe $2,000
additional
cost. *Much* cheaper than adding another bay, plus you now
have the option
of working under your car standing up. One of the
smarter things I've done,
although that is a low bar.
I got a used drive-on lift from an exhaust shop that went out of
business.
Half price from new - about $1,500. Western Lift. They
all seem to be
pretty equivalent. Found it after about two weeks of
looking - be patient
and look around and you should find something even
cheaper, Rich. I even
found someone who would haul it out from the 60
miles away and install it
for about $300. Don't even think about
installing one by yourself - it took
three people and my big tractor to get
it up and in place. The side with the
cylinder weighed about half a
ton.
I think the drive-ons are cheaper to buy and install than the side
lifters,
but I could be wrong. The first few wheel jobs I did were a
struggle, but
then I got a high-lift stand. Now, if I want to work
under the car with the
wheels off the ground, I just raise the lift, put the
stand under wherever,
and then lower the lift. Voila - wheels off the
rails. Really as easy as a
side-lifter. Of course, you don't get
the benefit of having your 64 GTO up
in the air with the suspension unloaded,
but I don't know what value to
attribute to that.
There is some pics of the garage and lift at
http://www.jag-lovers.org/v.htm?1010293324,
although there is no 3s content,
and not sure any additional helpful
information. But if you can do it - go
for it, Rich. A lift is a
truly wonderful toy, err, tool, to have. You
*won't* regret it.
If anything, my only regret is not building a larger
garage. 24x24 is
too small.

Get an estimate for 'Storage Rafters'. Normal rafters are just strong
enough
to hold up the roof. Storage Rafters are designed to give you a
storage area
in the peak.
Also consider making it nice and long to give you a work area in front of
the
car. 26 feet would be pretty good (and 30 is better ;-).
Probably won't add
much to the price.

Harbor Freight Jack question
If you reply to this message after 3pm PST today, please copy to my home

I recently purchased the Harbor Freight Aluminum Race Jack (6 pump). I used
it to jack up my VR4 to put it on jack stands. I removed the jack for front
clearance to do my oil change. When I went to lower the car the jack
started acting funny. With the bleed valve closed, I'd push down on the
handle and the jack arm would rise. When I raised the handle for the next
pump, the arm would fall. It was if the check valve was staying open. I
tried several things to try to get it to operate correctly. Finally, 4 days
later I tried the jack again and had the same problem. I opened the bleed
valve and then "bounced" the jack off the concrete floor several times,
hoping to free the check valve. It worked and the jack started operating in
the normal fashion. I have yet to apply a load to the jack since it started
operating again.
I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar problem with the
harbor freight jack. I know Bob F and Ann K both have one (I've used theirs
and observed no problems).
I'm wanting to have confidence that the jack will keep the car up to allow
me to place jack stands. I'm thinking I want to trade this jack in for a
new one. I will go to Harbor Freight on Saturday (tomorrow).
I appreciate any comments you might have.
Thanks in advance.

Hey, Mike,
We've used ours 50+ times and haven't seen a problem, so I
guess I can't help
much. Have you called HF's customer service
department? It might save you a
trip. You can compare with ours
at the Thunderhill track next Thursday when
we will all be at Bonni's "Team"
event. Good luck!

My car is completely stock at this point but I am getting ready to do
some
of the basic mods (air intake, exhaust (turbos back) and boost
controller -
to start).
From talking to a couple of exhaust shops, they mentioned trouble with
3
inch exhausts on the car and it got me thinking.
From those that have done the upgrades, are there any points or advice
that
you'd like to give a guy whose going to do these himself . . . kind of
"if
I'd known about this, it would have gone smoother." Any possible
problems
to look out for?
Any help would be appreciated.
