Team3S: OT : European Mini-Gathering in Strasbourg (France)
By the end of September, a few of us "Europeans" came together for just a
few hours. At least there were three cars (wow !) what then made the first
european 3S gathering *smile*. Chris and his friend, Howard and myself hat
a great time in the nice city of Strasbourg (France) just a few miles close
to Germany and 1 hour from Switzerland. Chatting about cars, techs, jobs
and so on was great fun and we ended with a nice diner before we all went
back home. And of course we discussed the first big european 2 day event
that should take place end of summer 2004. Many ideas are in our minds and
nothing is real right now, but I'm positive that we find somethign nice
around the nice winerys in France (it is pretty central for where the 3S
people are comming from... UK, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands,
Belgium ...)
Lookign forward to meet many of the european 3S people next year !!

Nice pictures! But I seem to remember two black Stealths and one red
3000GT
together at the dyno in Zurich about four and a half years ago...
wasn't
that the first European Gathering?! ;-)

Took my VR-4 into the local Mitsubishi Service Dept to have some
maintenance
and a repair done. The repair was to the right front CV joints.
After they
finished, the alignment was off by quite a bit. Their tech was out
for the
rest of the week so I'll have to take it back next week to have it
aligned.
My understanding is that CV joints don't have anything to do with
the
alignment. Is this correct? If so, what could they have done to cause it
to
be out so bad? Should I insist on a free alignment due to their
ineptness?

Yes

If they disassembled the strut from the spindle, and didn't put the two
big
bolts back in exactly the same place, your alignment will be off. The
bolts
are free to move around a bit because the holes are bigger than the
bolts.
(Been there, done that. We just finished replacing my trans and
ball
joints, and did the exact same thing)
You might try jacking it up, remove the RF wheel, and check the two
bolts
to see if you can figure out by the rust and grease where they should
be.
If so, you might be able to wiggle it back into alignment yourself.
It's also possible that they popped off the tie rod to get the strut
loose,
adjusted it to get some play, and didn't put it back in the same
place.
Again, see if you tell by the dirt where it is supposed to be.
>Should I insist on a free alignment due to their ineptness?
Charge back in there, full of fire and brimstone, and tell them there's
no
way they should have messed up the alignment, and see if you can get
a
freebie.
They will probably say, "Oh, we forgot to do the alignment. Thanks
for
reminding us! That'll be another $200!!"
What did they charge you, anyway? Should be an hour labor (or less)
plus
parts.

You pretty much have to remove the axles to do much with the CV
joints. In the process they likely didn't mark the positions of the camber
adjustment bolts through the struts. I've never had a problem with
alignment after pulling axles for clutch swaps, but I've also always marked the
exact position of the camber bolts before wrenching on them.
At least the method I use keeps the alignment. Remove the camber
bolts, seperate the tie rod end ball joint, disconnect the brake line retainer
from the strut and you have enough play to get the axles out. If you do it
that way, toe is completely unaffected and camber is up to you getting the bolts
back where they were.
I'd say they should thow in the alignment job for free for not knowing
better.

Just wanted to let you all know, and thank you for all the help, regarding
my problem with my VR-4 taking longer to start.
The problem was the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Took about 10 minutes to
replace, and that even included a little housecleaning. Now
it starts
right up like it used to.

Is it hard to adjust the headlights in a 2nd gen car ? I have a 1997
VR-4 and after having custom paint done, the shop also
replaced the
headlights with a different color, one that would match the new paintjob
better.
But he never adjusted the headlights and I think they are pointing down to
much.

Team3S: Some Brake Questions
Coupla questions for anyone willing to share a little
expertise:
I've developed a shimmy when the brakes are applied at
high speed. I'm
assuming the rotors need to be
turned.
Everyone agree with that diagnosis?
Next, I replaced the pads about
a year ago and there's still a fair
amount of life left in them. Is the
best approach to always replace the
pads if you turn the
rotors?
Last, when replacing the pads I noticed what appear to be
shims that
slip between the pad and the pistons. One was solid
metal. The other
had grooves cut in it.
Is it crucial to proper functioning that both be
re-installed? I was
unable to fit one of the shims in the last time, so
I left it out. Now,
my rotors are warped. Could there be cause and
effect
there?
Thanks for the help!!

Thanks for the education, guys. I'm going to march right in that
Service
Manager's office and, with the most intimadating look I can muster,
I'll....
....drop to my knees and BEG him to fix it. OK, if he can't do it for
free
I'll just ask that he leaves a few pennies in my checking account when
he is
finished. ;)
I used work on my own cars more than I do now. Back then, I had more
time
than money, but now it's kind of gone the other way. The former
way is the
only way you can be sure that it is done right.
BTW, Rich, it was $240.00 (flame suit on).

Not real terrible, assuming you got a new CV joint out of it.

I guess it was two new CV joints. There's one at each end of the
axel?

Christ Rich, you've got to remember that most of the world doesn't have a
Dennies
Muffler and Stormdoor company --- out here in the Golden Ghetto they
charge $40
just to talk to service writer. A dealer uses a flat rate book to
determine cost and at
a labor rate of $75 to $100 you sure ain't gonna get
much done for $100. You can
probably get mixed drink at the local bar for
$1.75 where we pay $4 for an Import
beer --- that's beer from another
country, not Des Moines, for you Cedar Rapids
types. There's a price to be
paid for living in Gods country and we pay every day.

Window Regulator and e-01
Hello-
I was wondering if anybody had any insight to where I
could find a
drivers side power window regulator for
less than $250 like the dealerships
want. Also is it
hard to do yourself b/c they want like another
$250
for install.
Also...
What do you think about the Greddy e-01 boost
controller/data
logger. I've heard good things about
it but I am wondering if anybody
knows if it has
functions like the Apexi SAFC II has. I would like
to
be able to control my fuel but am wondering if the
e-01 will do it all
for me.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
