Subject: Team3S: MFBA Speed Seekers next event!!!

I have just registered. This is the second event this year, the same kind
that Rich Merritt, Jack T, Jon, me and couple other guys went in April this
year. We had a blast! This is the link to the track report and the videos
- --> http://supercar-engineering.com/vid70-RAMFBA.htm

It's going to be on October 18th and 19th. You can still pay with PayPal.
Later they will close PayPal and will accept checks in the mail only. The
spots fill fast. If in doubt, register now and then you should be able to
sell it because they normally have long waiting lists for this event.

High temp caliper grease. Autozone sells them for ~$1.xx / packet
(/caliper).

Subject: Team3S: New engine noise

I was coming home last night from swapping the head out on my friend's sister's
Buick when I started to notice a ticking sound coming from my engine that I can
only describe as an extreme-sounding lifter tick.  I noticed that it got worse
as the engine revved, becoming very noticeable at around 3000rpm and increasing
in frequency ("revving") right along with the engine.  I did not notice it when
the car was in neutral/clutch-in last night.  This morning on my way in to work
I noticed the same problem, only markedly louder.  It also now makes the same
sound when idling.  I noticed today also that the sound seems to fade in and
out, like a sine wave, at about 20 second intervals.

I'm drawing a blank here, and am real nervous, because I don't like to hear
sounds like this coming out of my engine. The only thing i've done lately is
switching to Mobil 1 full synthetic, and this doesn't seem like the source of
my problem.

Subject: Re: Team3S: bad tuneup

Spark plugs that are the wrong type or that are "old" can cause minor or major hesitation either idling, cruising or accelerating. I have not experienced this in my '92 TT. But my '87 Mitsu pickup (4 cyl) had "bad plugs" once. Maybe 30K miles on copper NGKs. Hesitation appeared right after filling the gas tank. I thought it was bad gas. Later I changed the plugs. They looked just fine. However, engine ran good again after the plug change (only thing done).

No the ECU cannot really adjust for spark plug induced hesitation (bad plugs).

No the ECU should not "burn up" if the plugs are bad. The plugs are on a passive electrical circuit that gets all of its current from energy stored in the coils. The plugs are effectively isolated from the ECU. And the ECU is somewhat isolated from the coils (in case the plugs are disconnected while the coil tries to fire) by a "capacitor" or "noise condenser" (attached to the coil bracket); there may be additional protection in the power transistor unit.

Some misguided owners have installed Champion plugs with a hotter heat range than recommended by Mitsu. This might cause the chances for detonation to increase, which might result in timing retard if detonation occurs, which might be felt as hesitation during acceleration.

Champion does not make platinum-tipped spark plugs for our engines.

If you want to run "copper" plugs (and don't mind changing plugs every 5000-30000 miles) I suggest NGK BCPR6ES-11 plugs. If you want to run "platinums" (recommended by Mitsu) then NGK and Denso make these for our engines.

Ted,
I am not an expert but if you replace your lifters (~$220 set) and
inspect/replace
any bad rockers(~$17 ea), you will might get lucky and get off cheap.
I had a cam go bad, which you may also find when you pull the valve covers,
$525 retail from Dodge ($300 through a discount source).
Worst case, what ever is causing the noise comes apart and takes a valve
with it.
Then your into a major repair effort.
Good Luck and post what you find. If you need a parts/cost list, I can send
you an excel spread sheet of parts I bought during the 24 bent valve repair on
my '91 TT.

Subject: RE: Team3S: Short Block Price

Jeff,
I got this a short while ago from another owner with a rebuild project. I
called tallmits and they still had that price a few weeks ago. This is the
four bolt main (2nd gen) shortblock, which takes a bit more parts to make
work as a 1st gen replacement. John Monnin's website has details on what is
required for the upgrade.

".... I'm going to go through tallmits.com they have brand new short
blocks for $2355 plus $175 for shipping. plus there is no core charge..."

Subject: Team3S: Blitz SBC-Id Question

I just finished installing my new Blitz SBC-ID this weekend.  When fooling around with it, I noticed that when the Boost menu is up, if you hold down the menu button for a few seconds, two additional items appear.  One is Response (options are ---, norm, mild, slow), and the other is Keep Gain (which defaults to 45, but is adjustable in increments of 5).  If you hold the menu button down for a few seconds again, these 2 items disappear.  The manual says nothing about them.  (Imagine that?).  Does anyone know what those are for?  Thanks!

I don't deny used parts are cheaper but there is risk associated with using
them.
The cam I pulled out might be acceptable for someone, any takers at $15 plus
shipping?
