Team3S: part number for hose please
I need the part number for the large diameter hose that runs from the stock
airbox, past the battery, up to the engine. Car is 91 DOHC non-turbo Stealth.
The battery has corroded and eaten away part of it--that's what I get for not
checking under the hood for a while. Also, is Mitsubishi Parts Direct the best
place to purchase said hose? Thanks.

Team3S: You have to see these destroyed brakes!
Late reply, but:
This happens more often than you think. Not a pad issue, operator error.
Generally it is from the 'red fog' wanting much more from your
equipment
than it can give. Not listening to the car.
I've seen it happen on little cars as well as big ones. With drivers
who seem somewhat experienced. Actually, it would take a pretty good
jolt to make me take notice once in the groove on the track.
I can't get to 3SI.ORG right now, but I wonder how much pad was left on
those that didn't melt. With our cars, maybe the lesson is to start a
session
with at least 30-40% pad left.

New venue proposed for NG 2004
For those of us who love to race, I'm proposing the Bay Area. That
means Sears Point or Laguna Seca in the late summer or early fall - or even
later
(October/November) as being possibilities. Either one is among
the most beautiful in the country, temps are comfortable AND cars run faster if
it isn't 100 degrees (!).
NASA says that they can get us Laguna Seca for the day (part of an HPDE
weekend, with the 3rd day for Team3S/3Si ONLY) which means the typical monster
BBQ and fun in the (livable) sun rather than in a gazillion degrees. We
could make an existing HPDE weekend into a 3-day event at Sears Point:
(Nov. 07-08-09 2004 has been one that can fit without even trying -suggested by
NASA), and it would be cheaper than booking a single day... There are lots
of folks who would love to run at these tracks - we should add this possibility
to the mix of venues being discussed... We're ready for a REAL gathering
to remember for a lifetime, and "nobody does it better" than what we've got out
here. In '98, even Eric Lotter (owner of 3Si.org) came out to join us at
one of our gatherings and we all had a ball!
The most logical place for a gathering is the middle of the country.
But this isn't about logic, it's about MAGIC. ;-) I say Laguna
Seca. "Corkscrew", anyone??? If you're man enough...

Bob --- why don't you do a little follow up on that concept. We could
at least get a West Coast gathering and maybe attract some of the Central US
folk who are starting to get cold. Instead of our yearly Sears Point outing we
could create a Laguna Seca weekend.
A weeks vacation in Gods country shouldn't be a hard sell --- Monterey, San
Francisco, Napa Valley, Coastal Redwoods, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. If you
can't sell your SO on a week in that environment then you're just not
trying.
Chi town ??? Who in the hell would go there on purpose. Just because a lot
of people live nearby is no reason to go there.

I know I've promised to post the information on part numbers for the fuel
pump O-rings that I used as a replacement. Mitsubishi has no part number
for them, but Borg Warner part number 274571 is a box of eight GM fuel injector
O-rings that are identical to those used on our stock fuel pumps. They'll fit
the usual bolt-in upgrade pumps as well (Walbro, Denso Supra pump, etc.).
I found them at CarParts.com for $1.12, lots of places will probably be
able to get them. PartsAmerica.com (Checker/Schucks/etc.) has them for
$1.59.

you could have air in the line, flush, fill and bleed.
if that doesn't remedy, it very possible that your master or slave cylinder
is bypassing, repair/replace, flush, fill, bleed. 99% of most clutch related
issues are due to bypassing master or slave cylinders......fairly easy to
repair.

Air and fuel filters would not hurt to be changed, but with a K&N you
can plainly tell when its dirty and with only 70K miles the fuel filter should
be ok. This sounds like something else, but likely nothing serious. I would bet
my dime on spark plug gaps. Classic spark blowout.

Your fuel pump is located inside of the gas tank. Lift up your rear hatch,
lift up the carpet back there and look for a metal cover to the right of the
spare tire. Under that is the fuel pump.
The fuel filter is a black cylinder bolted to your firewall under the hood.
If you remove the battery it will be viable slightly to the right of where the
battery was sitting. I think you may have to remove the battery tray and
windshield washer tank too.

Team3S: battery drain / charging system problem
The battery in my Stealth runs down when the car is parked for a week or so
(I just returned from a two-week trip and it was completely dead). I don't
think this is normal, but it has been that way for years (the Optima had been
putting up with it well enough that I often forgot about the problem). On my
recent trip to Le Mans, the battery discharged en route, which I hadn't
previously experienced. At first I noticed spark blowout under boost at
high RPM, and then the radio tuner started fading after I was stuck in a traffic
jam for nearly an hour at idle (I admittedly had a lot of electronics running,
including the A/C, fan, stereo and a small inverter charging camera and GPS
batteries). I bought a new battery in France (conventional type with
terminals on the wrong side installed for 100 Euros plus a case of beer) and
measured right around 12 VDC while running with no A/C and all accessories
off.
So, it seems that there is a problem with my charging system, but that
doesn't explain the draw when the car is off (perhaps the alternator fried from
constant recharging). Any suggestions on tracking this down?
BTW, I recharged the Optima when I returned home and it seems to hold only
12.2 VDC. I assume it should be 12.6 like conventional batteries? Is
it toast?

Not necessarily. A 12 V battery is rated to be 12V. It does
sound like you have a charging issue. 11.5 or above is normal for the
battery when the car is off. 14 to 15.5 is normal for a running car, less
tells you the alternator is not working properly. As to the two week
death, this is a bit short. There are many parasitic loads on the
battery. The radio and clock, some of the computers in the car are lined
to the battery, any added accessories could also be a drain. I installed a
CD changer in one of my cars and did not bother to put the power on lead to a
keyed wire, it could drain the battery in two days(finally fixed that when I got
tired of push starting it). Only way to prevent parasitic loads from
killing the battery is pull the fuses or get a battery disconnect switch.
This means resetting the clock and radio stations every time, but you are doing
that now if the battery is going full dead. Finding the drain can be damn
difficult. The best way to trace such a small drain is with a LED and
resistor. Key off, pull fuse on suspected cir that is 'leaking', insert
the resistor, correct resistor size depends on current needed by the LED, in
series with the LED into the fuse clips. If LED lights, then there is a
ground path on that circuit. Now you have to determine if there should
indeed be a ground path on the circuit. Does if feed a computer or some
other device that needs to keep power? Then pull all the connectors down
stream to see when the LED goes out. Quite possible that just part of the
bridge in the alternator is burnt, and you were getting weak charging, but
charging that would maintain the battery at marginal values depending on time
left sitting and driving conditions. Do the alternator first and then see
how it behaves.

How about a "Dream 3S Race Week" on the West Coast?
Well I don't like doing things halfway... Let's not kid ourselves
that a West Coast gathering will be "National" any more than an East Coast
gathering will... If we are going to seriously try to set up a "mega
gathering" out here, and we have East Coasters considering it, I'm going to
explore the possibility of a 4- or 5-day gathering that includes BOTH Laguna
Seca AND Sears Point. Open-tracking, Autocross, and 1/4 mile. It's a
secret dream of mine to have a 1/4 mile 'Invitational'-- Team3S/3Si against the
California Highway Patrol "Stealth Force"... The CHP has a couple of dozen
"Stealth Cars" - modded unmarked Camaros that can do 150 or so. Betcha we
can get every CHP "Stealth Force" car in CA to run against us - they already run
a few every Wed night drags at SPR against the high-schoolers. They'd jump
at the chance to run against the big boys in *real* Stealths and
3000GTs... ;-) We'd get press, support, and freebies galore... Even
more if we ran it as a charity event(!). And then we'd run organized
4-group (Novice, Beginner, Advanced, Expert) HPDEs at Laguna Seca that same
week? Maybe jointly with the CHP? AWEsome myriad
possibilities.
Laguna Seca is incredible enough, and will also probably have a sand track
by next year, but Sears has a Go-Cart track, Autocross track, lots more...
If we run open tracking at SPR, we could try to get it on a weekend where it's
set up for NASCAR Winston Cup including "The Chute"... There are LOTS of
ways to make this unforgettable and to attract 3S-ers from everywhere!
Stay tuned, race fans... I'm gonna talk the deal to NASA this
weekend. I just need to know how many 3S people from the East are *really*
serious about doing a "Dream 3S Race Week" out here on the Best Coast sometime
next year... Our cars aren't getting any younger. Now is the time to make
it happen.

Subject: Re:
Team3S: battery drain / charging system problem
Yup. It's a good bet. Voltage should be 13.8, not 12. And
it's not voltage that's important, it's how many amps it can provide. If
the battery has been drained repeatedly by a slow short or bad component, it can
wear it down rapidly. It says a lot for the Optima that it has lasted this
long. If you have a slow drain from a door, hood, hatch, glove box being
open or still trickling 'juice' (from corrosion or stickiness), it can even
drain overnight. First place to check is the battery connectors.
Disconnect them and clean any white deposits with a baking soda & water
paste. If they look too corroded, replace them. Clean/check any door
light switches especially, and make sure that wires to any aftermarket gauges
you have run off the dash lights haven't corroded or made contact
somewhere.
Good luck!

Last call for NASA Bay Area HPDE at Reno, NV this weekend!
Because it is a new track, there is an extra FIFTH run session for ALL HPDE
groups this weekend at the new Reno-Fernley track facility, and they have
dropped the weekend price. Track entrance is free this time too.
It's a 4-hr drive from San Francisco - less for folks in the North and East Bay
areas. We'll be setting up a couple of tents somewhere and we'll have the
trailer there with ET's Spec Miata. And we'll be running the BBQ Saturday
night... Look for my 91 Jamaica Blue Metallic VR-4. Here's the release
from NASA, below. Email me if you want to join us!
- --Forrest
- --------------------------
Hello NASA Fans,
Here is one last
reminder about the Reno Fernley event this coming weekend. This is the first
event at a brand new facility.
HPDE:
For HPDE we want to keep it small, as a shakedown for the big
event in August. Therefore, the group sizes are small, thus giving all us more
track time than usual! Not only that, but we have reduced the price for
HPDE entries as a little welcome to the new facility.
Parade Laps:
Additionally, there will be a noontime parade lap session
for all drivers to take their families out for a ride.
Admission:
There will be NO ADMISSION charge, this one time! Note:
There is a nominal admission charge to see the optional Saturday night 3/8th
mile clay oval races, right there on the property.
Kid Care:
There will be no 'kid care' at this event due to lack of a
proper building. We hope to have a building by the August event.
Deadline:
Due to the nature of this event, the online registration will
close out at 9AM on Thursday morning. Do not wait. There is a $50
fee to sign up at the track!

Count me in.
I wouldn't want to drive my car there and back alone, but I can probably
convince my ROWG buddy Brian to tow out with his 44 ft trailer and F350 turbo
diesel. You'd have to let his Z06 run as a guest, though.
We might even get up a caravan from Cedar Rapids/Des Moines, with 4-6
3000GT/Stealths. With enough planning and Brian's rig as caravan headquarters
and a way to get a broken car home, it's doable.
Given enuf lead time, I bet groups of 3000GTs all over the country could
plan something similar around one big tow rig. You better allow for more
Brian-like guests.
The big problem with any gathering or DE event on the Left Coast is that
it's tough to justify driving all that way for a one-day DE. But *TWO* DEs in
the same week...at those two tracks...now yer talking!
This may be the best idea you've come up with in a long time.

Well, I came across some paint that seems to be wonderful on the upper
timing covers. Just as a recap, I had problems with other paint sticking to the
plastic as it would just chip off.
I was at the hardware store just browsing around, and came across paint
called "Fusion for Plastic" by Krylon. The can said that it is for all
plastics and is supposed to chemically bond with the plastic ensuring a good
coat and no chipping.
I figured it couldn't hurt, so I gave it a shot. It covered really
well, and I didn't even have to sand or otherwise prep the surface, other than
just using cleaner to get the old chipping paint off.
It seems to hold up really well, doesn't chip, and seems to resist the
underhood heat really well. Of course I have only had it on there for a
little while but it was better than anything I have seen so far.

Subject: Re:
Team3S: How about a "Dream 3S Race Week" on the West Coast?
We have to see how many people are interested, for what budget, and when.
I'll get some of the basics as to availability of the two tracks on adjacent
weekends or private rental of one of them for a day or two during the week.
We'll talk it up on the Team3S Racers list, and make occasional reminder posts
to the main Team3S list, for those folks who haven't tried an High-Performance
Driver Ed program yet and who aren't part of our "racer's" list. But the
main thing is crunching the numbers to make it as affordable as possible.
If we were all ROWG's, we could just rent Laguna for the day and do
whatever we want with unlimited track time ($15k, or $150 apiece for 100
people). But that would be without safety workers, med staff, insurance
and ground crew. Safety is paramount, so that's not even a possibility worth
discussing. We want to make this part of an existing program and
NASA is our best bet, since Team3S has "NASA-sanctioned club status". (And
that covers us for "contact" insurance - no insurance claim at one of Jerry's
NASA events has *ever* been unpaid, since 1989.) I'm assuming that it's
going to cost us <$100/day each for track time for a package deal.
(It's currently $300 list for 2 days - our usual Team3S discount is $240 for 2
days).
We know that we've got an almost equal number of Experienced and Expert
drivers (Group 3 and Group 4) and twice as many Novice and Beginner (Group 1 and
Group 2), so that a turnout of 100 will probably be worth *their* while and keep
our costs low. But doing some quick math, I think we can be in a strong
bargaining position with anything over 60 people. If we join an existing
weekend on the NASA schedule for one of the tracks and book it in advance, we
can pretty much take the thing over and get whatever we want for 3 days (Friday
to Sunday), like we're doing this weekend at the new track in Reno.
(All-day test and tune Friday - unlimited track time - is $100 through NASA,
$150 to anyone else). Finding a weekday (or two) at the other track in
that same week will be the main issue, and we'll have Jerry give us a list of
possibilities.
Right now I'm leaning towards a two-day open track event at Laguna Seca and
one-day rental of Sears Point for Autocross and Drags (and maybe they'll throw
in a DE or two for us that day). The opposite scenario (2 days at SPR, 1
day at LS) is cheaper for lodging (NASA has a deal local to SP for $50/night)
and more non-track stuff to do in the area: wine country, Bodega Bay, SF
clubs (I have free VIP entry at the biggest 5 in SF), and all those SFBay
excursions. Again - lots of events to round out the week for those folks who
stay for an extra day or two for a taste of paradise...
We'll continue this discussion on the Team3S Racers list and I'll post
updates here from time to time...
Best,
Forrest
