Subject: Team3S: Wheel Spacers

Well, I thought I had adequate clearance with my OZF1's (18x9's).  But
as all you probably have already guessed, the fronts have contacted the
Teins and the Teins cut nicely rounded grooves in the inner side walls
............ dangerous.  I have two new KD's on order ..............
they're in on Monday.  I'd like to try some wheel spacers but don't know
much about them and where to get them.

How thick to start ............ 5/10/20 mm?  Don't have any idea what
they come in.  Already tried TireRack and Discount Tire.

Thanks for any help.

My friend Dave Brown qualified 17th (his NASCAR debut!).   He's really bummed,
since car isn't running right, and he expected to do better.

We're on our way to Sears Point now (race starts at 1PM Pacific time), and we'll be sitting with ~50 people who run with NASA...  Our seats are at Turn 9, FYI...

Watch him!  Go Dave!!!

Later,

Forrest

A couple of questions:

1) What is the offset on the wheel itself?  This will affect how thick a spacer you would need.

2) What is the tread width of the tire?  (265?  This would be true on a
265/35R18)  This also affects how much clearance is needed.

If just 245, and a +45mm offset on the wheel, you should be able to get away with 1/2" or 10mm with plenty of clearance.  265 would need more. I think! :)

I run 15mm wheel spacers with stock chromies because it makes the front track as wide as the rear track. A long, long time ago I got convinced that this would make a difference, but I dunno if it does or not.

Try these guys:

H & R from Germany makes the wheel spacers www.hrsprings.com Bill Ma (one of us!!) at Visions Of Speed sells them http://visionsofspeed.net Options Auto Salon sells them www.optauto.com http://www.livermoreperformance.com/H&R%20Wheel%20Spacers.html

Subject: Team3S: will the 4 stock wheels fit in the car?

Hey all,

I wanted to know if anybody has a clue as to whether I can fit 4 stock wheels (with tires mounted) in my 3S if I remove the back seats, spare tire, all those little plastic compartments, prob'ly CD changer so it won't get damaged and the dividing hardware.  I've been going to the SF AutoX events on street tires but I'm about to get AutoX tires. I'm going to hate burning out my AutoX tires on the street since it's about 30 to 50 miles drive depending on the event location.  But it's going to get even worse when I go to the divisional event, which is like 2.5 hours away!

I'd hate to run the divisional on street tires, and I don't want to buy a trailer for financial reasons.  I'd have to spend at least $200 to $300 in order to get a hitch setup and buy a cheap, old, used, beaten-up trailer.

Ideas?

Many folks said they've done it --- I swear I've heard stories about 4 wheels and tires, tool boxes, coolers, chairs, Playboy magazine collection, girl friends and room left over for a St Bernard and 4 Gerbils.

PS: Darren does the same with a roll bar installed.

Yes, this has been done before. It is best though to remove the cardboard
spare wheel cover and the spare wheel itself. I had 4 wheels in my car plus
toolboxes and buncha bag. When I removed the cardboard the passenger's seat
freed up. http://supercar-engineering.com/Road_America03/P1010085.JPG

Flash drove those four wheels to me with a roll bar installed, along with
his wife Corie in the passenger's seat, a fire extinguisher (I think) and a
bunch of tools and other miscellaneous stuff in the trunk including a 5 ton
floor jack. Corie was much happier on the way back since she no longer had
to hold one of the wheels on her lap. :-)

I have done it without removing the cardboard.  If they are the 17" stock, there is only one way and it does work.  It has been a while but I think I remember.  Fold down the rear seat.  Put one wheel on the driver side, then lift the wheel you just put in and slide the second wheel on the pass side. Then I don't remember how the other two fit but they do fit and the hatch does close. The concept is the same for the other two but I don't recall.

Good Luck.

Thanks a lot for the advice everyone.  I have a rear strut tower bar which will make this a whole lot more fun.  But one way or another, it looks like I'll be able to do it for sure. =)

One word of caution. Watch that CD changer. Rich (old poop) broke his while
transporting a set of track wheels like that. I thought I broke mine too
when for the first time it refused to play on the way back from the track
the only time I did that. But, luckily, disconnecting the battery fixed it.
Gotta love electronics. Shutdown and restart fixes 99% of the problems. :-)
