Team3S: crank harmonic balancer bolt
Standard. Its supposed to be at 150 foot pounds of torque too so get a long
breaker bar and use your leg to break it lose. Obviously, you will need a tool
to hold the balancer/crank in place so the whole thing doesn't spin.

Yes it's a standard thread bolt. You can usually find that size at
sears.

RE: Team3S: socket for harmonic balancer
Anthony,
It's a 22MM socket. The day I did mine, I left my socket
in my toolbox at work. Rather than running down there, I went to Sears and
bought a new one. The threads are right hand, so turn it counterclockwise to
loosen it. Shallow is ok with a short extension, and deep is ok also. Six point
is safer for you and the head of the bolt, but I had no problem with a twelve
point. 138 Foot Pounds is the retightening torque when you are finally
installing the balancer for good. (You'll have it on and off many times)

The timing belt is very tight. The tensioner is fully
depressed. No the
way I installed it. The cam is very hard to
turn. The lash adjusters are
fully extended and hard as a rock.
Valves are partially open. What would
cause lash adj to fully extend
and freeze that way?

What about timing marks --- do they still line up ???
Lifters should be hard --- they're hydraulic and oil is not
compressible.

Need help with diagnosing Intermittent LOUD engine knock
Timing marks were fine. Let me try again. When the cam lobe is
off the
rocker, in the most neutral position, the valves are held
open. Is this
because I removed and reinstalled the cam and the lash
adjusters expanded
to their most extended position? Or did some other
thing cause the lash adj
to fully extend, resulting in lots of 'knock' and
poor idle?

harmonic balancer bolt
You can usually put a short breaker bar on the socket, and lay it up
against the frame of the car, rearward of the engine, and then blip the starter
to break the bolt loose. If it doesn't break loose after a few blips, try
something else, don't wanna break the bolt head off.

socket for harmonic balancer
7/8 inch SAE size will work here as well. Definitely take the advice
on 6-point socket. I used a 12-point and it worked, but the bolt got just
a tiny bit round off....not enough to matter, but why take a chance?
