Team3S: Alternator repair...follow up
I called them directly, but unfortunately, they don't sell to the public.
They referred me to a LOCAL shop here in the St. Louis, MO area. When I
called the place here I gave them part numbers from transpo's website....here's
what I got.
The regulator assembly that the dealer wanted $150 for and AutoZone wanted
$90 for: $36.
The rectifier assembly that Satan....er...um I mean the dealer wanted $90
for and no aftermarket parts places stock: $30
Just for reference, that's $66 for parts versus $240(autozone) for a
rebuilt alternator.
A little leg work goes a long way!!
Thanks again Marc!!

Data logger for Second Gen
After seeing a number of posts commenting on the lack of a data logger
capability for the second gen. I came across a product called "CarChip"
that plugs into the diagnostic connector that claims to provide some data
logging functions. Don't know if this will provide as much detail as we
need (I haven't used it yet), but wanted to pass it on as a possible step in the
right direction.
It is made by a company called Davis Instruments.

While under my car this past weekend I noticed that the three sectional
drive shaft was very un-straight. There is a kink at each section. Does
anybody know if this is normal by design or do I need to line it up, or is there
something wrong here. I did not measure the number of degrees it was
kinked but it was very noticeable.
Thanks

Matrix vs R4S
Can someone shed some light on this? I've heard some really good things
about the r4s pads, but I can't seem to be able to get a hold of any pricing
info (speedtoys.com has been saying "new pricing info available tonight" for the
past 3 days, and I can't seem to be able to get a hold of Geoff)
I need brakes, so I started looking at what else is out there, and dynamic
racing is offering front and rear metal matrix pads for 49 each (so 100 total)
and cross-drilled stillen rotors for 229 (front).
How does that price sound?
Thanks,
Alex

Alex if you are only running on the street and will never take the car to
an auto cross or the road course The Stillen pads are a good deal if you race
the car at all R4S are probably the best brakes you can buy for the stock
calipers.

What Russ said. Plus you need to decide if you want carbon Kevlar pads
(R4S) or metal matrix. More info on my brake upgrade web page below, including

Just ask. I'm not at liberty to post pricing on the Porterfield parts
thru an agreement with Porterfield. I don't disagree with it, but its what
protects the pricing we currently enjoy as well.
I'm always here in Email, did I miss yours?

Stillen loves repeat customers, stillen sells junk pads on flaky
rotors.
I enjoy repeat customers too, but mine will enjoy a full lifetime with
their products in a highly abusive environment. MMatrix pads can NOT to
track days, and I'll have to leave the archives to settle the rotor quality
debate.

Stillen rotors suck and metal matrix pads are little better than
stock.
Geoff has good rotors from Porterfield.
For Carbotech Panther Plus pads, try Ali at Jamn motorpsorts

The prices are fine, if you want barely "stock-plus" performance.
Cross-drilled slotted rotors are a crock, and metal matrix pads are only
slightly better than OEM. Get a *solid* Porterfield rotor and PF R4-S
pads. Great on the track, great on the street - low squeal when cold, low
dusting when hot. And the rotor won't crack in 2 sessions like
slotted. There IS a fairly reliable rotor made for Porsche that is *cast*
with holes and then drilled out just to clean up the holes - it doesn't fail as
much as cross-drilled, but "at a price". And it still won't be as reliable
as a solid rotor, IMO. PS: If you are ever looking for email addresses of
members who post regularly, you can go to our Archive page and pull up almost
*any* Digest - Geoff posts almost every day...

Big REDs are a complete brake upgrade that you have to buy/build, It uses
Porsche calipers, pads, and a custom mounting bracket to work with the 2G+ Twin
Turbo car rotors.
IIRC the kit with brackets was like 1300+, I believe Darren and a couple of
other listers have web pages extolling the virtues of that upgrade.

I remember people having issues with rotors cracking when they were
drilled, but does that also happen with slotting? From what I understood,
slotting improved braking a little by giving the pad something to "bite" into.
Is the improvement of slotting (everything else being equal) noticeable/worth
it?
I think I'm going to go with the Porterfield line because this is mostly
for street, but I do plan on visiting some autox courses in the future...
Thanks,
Alex.

I was not impressed by the Metal Matrix pads on the street. They were
very dusty, didn't last long and performed only slightly better than
stock. R4S pads perform better, last longer and generate less dust.
When it comes to the track, R4 pads are MUCH better than R4S on circuits, but
it's probably the other way around for autocrossing due to lower temps.

Since there is such a live interest in Carbotech brake pads, I have to tell
you guys that I started a small automotive performance company. I do not
have any products yet, but I have about 50 manufacturing ideas ranging from
mild to wild. There are some loyal Carbotech followers among us, including
Rich Merritt and Chuck Willis, and one of the products that I plan to carry
is Carbotech brake pads.
P.S. Brake pads will not be my only product, I promise! I also plan on
offering shock absorbers, complete suspension systems and many other
products for our cars.
