California Smog II program
I was just reading about the CA SMOG II program that will go into effect in
the Bay Area starting July 1, 2003. I gather it has been in effect in other
parts of the state already. In addition to more stringent testing of
exhaust output the program eventually will require a treadmill test.
My question is for those of you with AWD cars. I'm wondering what they do
with us. I'm thinking that they are normally setup for 2WD (front or rear).
I'm hoping that the solution is other than sending us many miles to a shop
with an AWD setup.
Thanks in advance. My next smog test is due July 2004. I'm thinking
ahead.

Here in CT (until they suspended emission 2 yrs ago YIPPEEE!!!) they had an
AWD treadmill at every location that was larger than 3 lanes (which was all but
one).
The look on the guys face when he tried to move the clutch pedal and
fought

Transmission Problems?
This is my first post and I hope somebody can reassure me that I'm not
going to kill my car. I have a 93 3000GT SL. It has over 110,000 miles on
it and my concern is that particularly on cold mornings my car doesn't like
second gear. With clutch in and going from first to second gear it is
rough getting it into gear and sometimes slightly grinds. It seem like
after the car is warmed up it's better. Any thoughts? Is my clutch
starting to go out or is it something worse like transmission problems?

I've got that same problem to the letter, and I know my clutch is

however ;) Suffice to say, I'm curious to see if it is something other
than the synchro going out.

Hi all,
I've had my stealth now for a bit over a year. I
didn't have any knowledge
of what the car went through before I got it. It
was a graduation present from
my Dad. It now has 170k on it, and since
I've had it I've replaced the water
pump, timing belt, tensioner, access.
Belt, computer, and crank censor. It
seems to run pretty good, but
what are some signs that it's time for a tune
up? It does start pretty
rough when it's cold. Lots of ticking, etc. until it
warms up. I don't know
when it was last tuned up or the transmission fluid
changed, so if anyone
can help me out on some typical signs when it's time to
get the work done. I
feel like the car could run better, but I want to be sure
before I invest
the time and money to do the work. Thanks

This is a fairly common problem with the transmissions on these cars. When
I
purchased my '92 VR4 in Nov. of '01, it had a rather pronounced notch when
shifting from 1st to 2nd. I changed all fluids (tranny, transfer case and
diff)
to Redline fluids. While there is still a slight notch, it has greatly
improved. There are other fluids besides Redline that others on this list swear
by but
this is what I have used.

I am very sorry to hear about your accident, but good to hear that you are
ok. As far as I know, the insurance company of the b*tch that hit you will
only pay up to the policy limit of the 30K for verifiable damages that you
incurred. If you have uninsured motorist coverage you might be able to
collect additional damages if your expenses are hirer then what the other driver
has coverage for. Anything more and you will have to sue the other driver
and if she has nothing to sue for then it would not be worth it.
Good luck

Keep in mind it was a 91 base model stealth with 125k miles on it and on
it's second tranny. I would love to have it back just like it was before
the wreck, but when you get frame damage and a collision to this degree even if
they spent a lot of $$$ on it, it would still never drive right(alignment,
steering, and safety). I only paid $2,800 for the car a little over a year
ago...
Does anyone know how insurance claims work? Like all of my medical
bills are being paid for by "Access" (Arizona State insurance). But the
other lady that caused the accident only had $30,000 liability. I've had
other people in my family tell me they've known people with less injuries get
upwards of $2-$500,000 settlement checks. Where does this money come from
if the other person's insurance coverage is only $30k???
I hope my lawyer will be able to get as much as possible and hopefully more
than $30k. If anyone knows how all this works please feel free to email me
back privately.
Thanks,

Hey, Erik,
WOW! I hadn't realized that you were hurt until I went to the
link! Ouch! This is the first time I've ever seen serious injuries in one
of our cars, since there are so many protection and "crumple zones" built
in... (Even more so in the 2nd Gen cars 94+). I'm so sorry to see
that you were hurt, and I hope you're feeling better. Such a drag!
If there's anything we can do for you, this is ON topic, since it is an
important issue - even more so that it has happened to "one of our own".
Feel free to post whatever you like that may help you out ON the list. And
if it might benefit someone else later, no need to ask for private replies,
either... We're here to help one another - I can't think of anything more
"On Topic" than helping you through this.
I hope you have a speedy recovery!

My check engine light came on briefly during a 3 hour drive this weekend
(twice). The first time it came on was when I turned on my headlights - the car
stuttered (barely noticeable) and the light came on. I shut off the light and
the Check Engine light went off.
The second time was when I turned on the climate control. Again the problem
went away when I shut off the climate control.
Later I was able to use both the climate control and the headlights without
any problems.
This is a 97 VR4 and I'm located in the Bay Area so temps in the high 60's
this weekend. Any ideas?
Also, the car is still under extended warranty, but how can I get them to
take care of this if the problem is no longer apparent?

RE: Team3S: Check Engine light
There's a good chance that a trouble code was set, even though the CEL went
off. However, if the CEL light went on only when the car bogged down, then
the CEL code probably wont tell you what is wrong, as one of the sensors
probably got an odd reading BECAUSE the car bogged. You'll need to find
out what caused the car to bog down.

Call around and find an auto parts store that does free battery testing.
Take your car in and have your battery tested. Some places will check your
charging system too.
If your battery or alternator is weak then a drain on your electrical
system can trip a check engine light.

Intermittent problems can be handled under warranties, even when they are
currently in working normally. My experience was with a very strange sound
in the transmission of our Chevrolet Tahoe as it was warming up. We
reported it prior to the 3 year, 36000 miles warranty was up (along with a
few other things). They had yet to diagnose any problem. However, at about
40000 miles the noise was louder and troublesome. We took it back in and
because we had already gone on record with the issue, it was still covered
by Chevrolet. It turned out to be a broken baffle in the muffler that made
lots of noise while it was cold and when it warmed up after about 1/2 mile
of driving the noise would disappear. I had to leave the vehicle over night
for them to have a cold start to hear the noise and diagnose the
problem.
I've heard that extended warranty folks can be harder to deal with than
factory warranties. My suggestion is go on record with warranty issues even
if the "problem" has disappeared for the moment.

OT: I wrecked my stealth
I'm sure this information is not what you want to hear but It's based on
personal experience. My wife was in an accident about 4 years ago,
broadsided by a guy running a red light --- she had 5 broken ribs on one side,
two on the other and a broken pelvis. The car was, of course, totaled.
The driver had the California minimum of $15,000 liability --- his
insurance company agreed to give up the value of the policy, no lawyer involved,
another weird occurrence, but it saved me another 25% to 40% of the $15K. If we
wanted to try to get additional funds we would have to sue him personally. He
lived in a rental house and drove a 10 year old car [ he was driving
someone
else's car at the time of the accident ]. Even if you found a lawyer willing to
sue the other driver personally you're not likely to get much money. Anybody
with minimum insurance usually has minimum cash. In my case the guy had moved
out of state anyway.
Then to add insult to injury the HMO that provided the medical
coverage
wanted up to $28K from any monies we received from his insurance.
Most, if not all HMO's have included in their policies the right for them to
recover their expenses from insurance settlements. I settled with them for 30%
of the 15K so for all my wife's injuries, pain, lost work and permanent
disabilities we ended up with $10,500. It could have been worse, there was a
second HMO involved [ her employer changed carriers ] but they apparently didn't
get the fact there was an insurance settlement.

California doesn't require 4 wheel rollers for the smog tests so any AWD

Wow I never thought I'd get so many replies... I thought maybe a couple
people would say they were sorry and all, but I've gotten over 20 replies
offering advice and sympathy... Thanks a lot guys, it really means a lot to know
that there is a good community of people out there. And some of the things
people have told me I might ask questions about later when I see my
lawyer.
About the insurance. I think since she only had liability on a 2001
Impala, then it had to have been paid off(otherwise if you owe money then you
have to carry full coverage). So she has to have some money right?
Or maybe she used it all to pay for her car. She does live in a house too,
I expect she is married and maybe owns it.
The lawyer that I have said that it doesn't look good for me getting a big
huge settlement. If the cops put on the accident report that I was
speeding like 15 or more over the limit then I might not even have a case?
And if he finds that the other lady doesn't have any personal assets then he is
only going to charge an hourly fee for what he's done so far.
I'm not too worried about getting a big check or not. I learned a
lesson or two out of it, and I have an excuse to take a semester off of
college.(just trying to look at the bright side of things) A big check
would be nice, but I don't want to sue the lady for all she's got and take her
house and all that. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what
develops. I'm sure it will work itself out in the long run hopefully in my
favor.
Thanks again guys,

Michael,
I would have the alternator checked out. It may be a bad
diode in the alternator. It could let enough alternating current into the
electrical system to make the ECM "Hiccup". I have seen it happen before many
times on electronic controlled Diesel Engines, where a bad alternator diode made
the engine miss, sputter, backfire, turn the check engine light on for a second,
and all kinds of weird things. Good Luck, Dave Thrower 92

If the car is not paid off the lien holder really only cars about collision
coverage. Liability can still be minimum as long as she has collision to cover

...And while I'm here, I'll throw in some "technical" stuff.
As some of
you might recall, I wrecked my '94 VR-4 by slamming against a tree on the driver
side door. I have been wanting to sell the wreckage that has a pretty much
brand new engine since I wrecked it but due to a burglary incident at the
wreckyard in which the "suspects" (I suspect it was the wreckyard people
themselves) stole a lot of personal property from the inside of the car. Nothing
in the engine was touched except that they disconnected and stole a turbo timer
I had installed. Anyways, I filed a claim for lost property with the police and
the wreckyard people agreed to file a claim with their insurance company and
that's where I've been stuck since. they wouldn't allow me to sell the car until
it was settled. I got a call from them yesterday saying that the insurance
company does not wan to pay so I told them I was going to sue them then. we
worked out some sort of drug deal in which in payment for the stolen stuff, they
wouldn't charge me the tow, cleanup, and storage fees. I'm going to take their
offer even though I would still be losing out a couple of hundred bucks but I
just want to get my car out of there and sell it. I know there were several
people interested. I'll repeat the condition of the wreckage real quick
for those of you unfamiliar. I got a few pictures of it but only 1 that clearly
shows the damage, I will send them out to those seriously interested only.
The car is a '94 black vr-4 with ~122K original miles and ~5k on a brand new
short block and a 60K service done to include new timing belt(and everything
else that goes with that), new water and oil pumps, new t-stat, new valves, new
denso iridium plugs and magnecor wires, and a K&N filter as the only
modifications. All these parts were about $4000 from ground zero
performance. The people at the wreck yard say the body is repairable but
didn't say how much. Basically, the damage is the door, rear quarter panel, and
the sunroof (I think they stole one taillight). The rest of the car is pretty
much intact except for 3 of 4 wheels that got bent up on the median curb. I
can't afford to repair it and don't have time, tools, or space to part it out so
please don't ask. I'm only willing to sell the wreckage whole. If a group of you
who needs parts wants to buy it together then you work out a drug deal between
yourselves. I am willing to sell to best offer but please don't low ball
me. You guys know what kind of money parts for our cars cost and I would say
that between the engine and the rest of the undamaged body, there's a good $4-5K
in parts. I will be leaving to D.C. early tomorrow morning so I won't be
able to respond until probably Thursday but if you are seriously interested,
send me an email and I will get back to you. Thanks

Team3S: Team 3S: Need affordable window parts for my stealth
Hey everyone,
This is my first post on the list, so first of all
hi to everyone. I have a 92 Dodge Stealth ES, in need of some new parts,
but overall I really like it. About 8 months ago, my driver's side window
croaked. Actually, the top part of the regulator broke because the cables in the
motor got tangled. So, they both were ruined. I proceeded to tie the window up
as best I could. Due to the fact that it's such a heavy window, it sags
down(yes, my seat gets wet every time it rains, snows, etc.). I contacted my
local Dodge Dealer and they wanted $230 just for the regulator. Quite
frankly, I don't have $230 extra dollars to replace that, much less the motor.
Can anyone help me out with this one? Good to be on the list!

I've had my stealth now for a bit over a year. I
didn't have any knowledge of what the car went through before I got it. It was a
graduation present from my Dad. It now has 170k on it, and since I've had
it I've replaced the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, access. Belt, computer,
and crank censor. It seems to run pretty good, but what are some signs
that it's time for a tune up? It does start pretty rough when it's cold.
Lots of ticking, etc. until it warms up. I don't know when it was last tuned up
or the transmission fluid changed, so if anyone can help me out on some typical
signs when it's time to get the work done. I feel like the car could run better,
but I want to be sure before I invest the time and money to do the work.
Thanks
Nick

Re: Team3S: California Smog II program
In Colorado, AWD vehicles use a "dual treadmill" for emissions tests.
However, some AWD cars are specifically exempted from this type of test because
of low clearance and low wheel/sidewall height. Among these are the Stealth TT
and 3000GT VR4. Our cars just use the "parked but revved engine" tests. We have
a web site that documents this - maybe CA has one too?

I was just reading about the CA SMOG II program that will go into effect in
the Bay Area starting July 1, 2003. I gather it has been in effect in other
parts of the state already. In addition to more stringent testing of
exhaust output the program eventually will require a treadmill test.
My question is for those of you with AWD cars. I'm wondering what they do
with us. I'm thinking that they are normally setup for 2WD (front or rear).
I'm hoping that the solution is other than sending us many miles to a shop
with an AWD setup.
Thanks in advance. My next smog test is due July 2004. I'm thinking
ahead.

Team3S: Time to sell, ugh!
HI guys,
I now I have only been on the list a short time but
unfortunately I am
forced to sell my 1993 Pearl White VR4. We are
expecting our first
child and we have to buy my wife a more practical car
(minivan), Hence
I need cash.
Stats on my car:
1993
Pearl White VR4
32,000 miles
All Stock
except for AMSOIL oil everywhere.
The car is in great shape with one or two
small stone chips on the hood. The Active aero works but I am not sure if the
Active Exhaust works
because I can her the Active exhaust motor operating
but I can't tell
and change in engine sound.
Brakes Pads are new, but I
think the rotors should be turned soon. The tires have about half the tread left
on them. All of the interior is in excellent shape. All accessories work
great. Oops, I forgot the car is not totally stock. I replaced the
Headlights
with the Sylvania SilverStar capsules (the best) and the Wipers
are the
new PIAA silicone blades.
The car was rarely driven in rain never
snow and always garage kept.
I am asking $18,000.
I just got a digital camera last week so as soon as I learn the darn
think I will take some pics if any is interested.
Thanks
Vinny

Team3S: Team 3S: Blitz Blow Off Valve Help
Hey, I just received the blow off valve I ordered, and all the instructions
are in Japanese. Does anyone know where there are instructions in English?
The only thing I'm really concerned about is the piston adjustment
instructions. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
