It's a balancing act, a cooler engine means cooler intake/cooler air/ more oxygen and more  power.  Hotter cylinder temps also means more power. Somewhere in there you have to keep your  oil temperature under control as well so it's performing it's job.  That's why you see people  icing their intake manifold at the drag strip right before they make a pass.

I think the cooler thermostat trick is being abused in many instances but I do think installing  a 180 deg thermostat in a lot of cars that came with 195 deg ones can be a good idea.  You have  to keep in mind that just because you have 195 deg thermostat doesn't mean that's the temp  you're engine will be at all the time.  A lot of times when you increase the power output your  cooling system can't keep up with the engine so you have to get creative.

Yes, leave it alone.  When not under load, it should run as designed.
When under high load for more than a short period, it'll be wide open no matter what and you'll  need extra cooling to boot. I too have always heard a higher design temp is more efficient.

I have in front of me the service manual for the 92 Stealth. Valve opening temp SOHC 180F 82C  DOHC 170F 76.5C . Full opening temp of thermostat SOHC 203F 95C DOHC 194F 90C (sec 7-2 "Service  Specifications") In my opinion, if those are the temps that the engine was designed to operate  at, then I would leave it at that.  David Thrower  92 Stealth R/T TT

Ok, most of you were right. I started it up, let run for like 30 seconds turned it off. And  there is a steady stream coming out from the water pump. When I look down between all the belts,  the stream is less than an inch from the right side of the oil filter. Where should I take this  to get fixed. I need it done as fast as possible as this is my commuter car too.

If they bring it over with all the things that the JDM model has, it should do OK.  The  important question is how castrated is it going to be due the Feds/EPA?????

If it were up to those tree hugging clowns, we would all be driving Honda insights  :/

I just had mine done. $1069 of which $408 was parts and the remaining $660 was labor. That was  pretty much a full 60K maintenance with water pump replacement as well.

I was hesitant to drive mine at all once it started leaking. Mine was not leaking as much as you  describe either.

Subject: Team3S: Admin Note! - OT: New Mazda? Tree-hugging clowns? Buzzards?

For those of you who appear to have had a problem remembering our rules, here's a reminder:   Off-Topic discussions *must* be identified as such in your subject line, if you must post them  at all.  And you must ask for "private replies", so that other members who 'forgot' won't answer  you on the list. This is a forum about Stealth and 3000GT, remember?  --Maintenance, repairs,  problems, racing, mods, upgrades, and even theory...  Technical topics.  We maintain a separate  "Team3S Racers" list for those of you who feel like chatting, but please keep chat about other  cars, flames, and one-line non-technical comments off the Team3S list.  If you want to chat  about Mazdas and Evos, there are other forums which welcome such discussions.  We don't.

As to "tree-hugging clowns", and whatever politically-extreme logic was used to relate them to  cars (?), such incendiary comments are not *ever* welcome on this list, especially in a post  which is devoid of technical value.  Otherwise we'll have to grant equal time to repartee about  president putz and the destruction of the environment, now, won't we!?!  It's a good bet that  right now one of our international members is wondering what a clown is doing hugging a tree...,  humorous as that imagery might be...  Probably waiting for the buzzards to stop circling around  the car with the new "mountain mod"(?).

Please respect the rules and protocols of this list.  We all agreed to them. Let's just limit  our discussions to *our* cars...

Since this, too, is an Off-Topic note, please confine your comments to private replies.

Thanks!

Maybe this sounds stupid, but "really"?  My oil pan has the "dealer monkeys were too lazy to use  a hoist to get the weight off the engine mount to do the 60k service so they used a jack and the  oil pan" mod.  It's indented about 1/2" over most of the bottom of the pan.

I'd never given it a second thought except to reconfirm my desire to do my own service on my  cars.  The 60k was done before I bought the car, BTW.

What does it do when the oil pan is dented?  Screw up the angles of the baffles?  Starve the  pump if it's really dented?  My oil pressure and temps are ok (measured by aftermarket gauges)  and the car has 10k miles on it since the dent was acquired.

Don't hit your local dealer yet. Especially not a Dodge dealer, since Mitsu knows 3S motors  better. The local dealer is easy and quick, but could be very costly in the long run. Search the  archives or e-mail me privately if you want to know why.

So:

If you're mechanically inclined, then I'd recommend spending a long Saturday and doing it  yourself.

If not, you can start by checking out the "Good Guys" dealers and vendors page.

http://www.team3s.com/FAQpartsupply.htm

If none of these are located within a reasonable driving distance from you, then please let us  know where you are located and perhaps we can suggest a nearby trusted shop.

I'll be replacing my front struts on my 92 RT/TT, probably the rears as well.

I'm more interested in ride quality and value over performance. In other words, I don't want  anything that is stiffer than stock when set on "Tour" mode. I never use the Sport setting.

AutoZone has struts for about $160 each, they tell me that Gabriel makes them.

Any recommendations?

New exhaust between flex and muffler - $1217

Sway bar links - $85
Front left lower ball joint - $438
Rear wiper switch - 34.18

total labour - $700

AND IT ISN'T THAT FAST!
Should I sell? I just bought it in late October early November.

If you really want the ride quality of your ECS to remain, then replace them with ECS struts.  Try this link, they have ECS struts for about $140 ea  https://www.trademotion.com/memberservices/index.cfm?action=login&siteid=840

Most people that replace with the Gabriels are not that satisfied.
