What Heads will fit my car?
Time to start looking for parts... Simple question, what heads will fit my
car? I'm thinking it may be cheaper /better to buy heads then to get a
valve job done. My car is a '92VR4. The only thing I can think of is that
the 91-92 had the adjustable cam angle sensor. Will my sensor setup fit
into other year heads or not?
Also, is there any difference between SL and TT heads?
Not that long ago Paul sold a beautiful pair of ported/polished heads, with
pressure tested seated valves and '99 lifters for $900.... Man I wish I
jumped on that! But then again, if I did they would be all bent up
now!

*Complete* DOHC 6G72 head info is available at my web page below. It notes
the
part number differences between NA (Z11A) and Turbo (Z16A) models and
year to
year. SOHC heads will not work (that I am aware f). The DOHC 6G72
was
installed in the Diamante, Stealth, and 3000GT.

Jeff, that chart is making my head spin... The only difference that I can
see thought is the cams. My cams (I measured a year ago) were perfect. Is
it possible to just take out old cams and put mine in then call it
good?

Team3S: Ignition advance question
All -
I'm in the process of tuning my AEM EMS, and I often find myself wonder
what the stock ECU did in certain situations. The fuel is easy
enough the figure out, but the timing advance is not as obvious.
Does anybody have any idea how much the stock ECU advances the timing while
driving? I'm sure it runs more advance during cruise, but how
much? I'm also sure it runs less advance during higher load, but
again, how much?
Is ignition advance loggable on 1st gen cars? If so, does anybody
have logs of their car during idling, cruising, and boosting? I
certainly don't need full-blown maps, I'm just looking for a few starting
points for my tuning.
Thanks,
- - Brian

Team3S: Redline oil and wheel bearings
I got a few questions. I'm gonna change the drive train fluids probably
next weekend. I was thinking of using Redline oil but I have read
about how TCs started leaking after pouring in the synthetic stuff. How
prevalent is this? Also, where can I order MT-90 and MTL from? I went to
that website recommended on Jeff's site but they only have Shockproof and
75W90 stuff. I didn't see any MT-90 or MTL, unless they started marketing
it under a new name or label. Is Redline better than BG Synhchroshift(I
haven't read anything about BG causing leaks)? 2nd question: How do you
know it's time to replace wheel bearings, besides mileage on the car. I
know the previous owner of the car changed them a long time ago but I'm
not sure exactly what the mileage on the current ones is. Will I hear any
noises or feel a ride difference? Finally, sometimes when I come to a light,
the passenger cabin starts smelling like some fluid burning. I guess the
AC is picking up the fumes from the engine bay or somewhere else. I
lifted the car and saw that some "clear, amber" colored fluid was dripping
on the downpipe, which I'm pretty positive is what is causing the foul
smell. Question is, where is this fluid coming from? Is this gear fluid
already leaking out of the transaxle or TC? I traced the dripping to a
rubber hose that connects to a metal line that leads to the driver side
driveshaft but I'm not sure if it is leaking from there or coming from
somewhere up top. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Oops, I'm such a dummy. I was only looking at the gear oil sections on that
website. I just realized that MT-90 and MTL are listed under the manual
tranny tab. Sorry.......

Team3S: ECU update (car started the first time but not since)
Hi,
Thanks again for the advice. I got my ECU back from the TV repair
shop last
night and plugged it in and....IT STARTED!!!! I drove it a
little bit (just in
the parking lot). The timing is off and I was
going to get that fixed today,
but my car wouldn't start. It turned
over but couldn't hold it. It started
ticking and clicking and then
cut off. I will pull the ECU and look at the
work. I don't know
if there's a short somewhere in the car or what. While
removing the
kick panel I came across some old wiring from a cell phone and I
tried to
trace it to remove, but ended up just cutting it to shorten it- might
that
be a potential source. Could it be a fuse somewhere? I'm open to any
ideas. I'll look around and let you know what I find.
Thanks,
Michael

You can test for a _really_ bad wheel bearing by jacking up the car so that
whatever wheel you're trying is off the ground, and trying to move the
wheel like you're trying to take it off (w/o loosening the lugs). You
should have _no_ play whatsoever.
I've heard horror stories of people having their wheel come off on the
highway, so I wouldn't mess with it.
Alex.

Team3S: 5-speed oil/additives suggestions?
My N/A 5-speed's oil has about 100K miles on it now so I'm due for a
change.
The last time it was changed I THINK I added both Mopar
Sure-Grip additive
(comes in a small white bottle with blue, bad smelling
oil) and Prolong
tranny oil additive to the dino oil (not sure of the
viscosity).
It shifted good with this set up but I know how everyone is fond of
synthetics, at least for the engine. Any recommendations for synthetic
tranny oil? If I still get a sticky shifter with a synthetic any
suggestions on good additives? Any help is appreciated!

Re: Team3S: ECU update (car started the first time but not since)
Did you have all 3 of your capacitors replaced or just the leaking 47 that
you found?
If not, then replace the other 2. I know on my ECU, I had 2 leaking
caps and the 3rd one stated leaking when the repair guy pulled it
out.
I looked at your older post on what the TV repair guy quoted you.
$100 is very steep for a 15 minute job. Take your ECU somewhere else
to replace the other caps.
I don't think anyone with leaking caps had another component go bad on
their boards from the leaking fluid. The board is covered in some
sort of coating that would prevent this. Replace the other caps
before worrying about any other parts.

It's not a 15 min job, to do it properly takes up to 2 hours. Changing the
caps only NEVER fixes it. The circuit board has to be cleaned where it
leaked, eaten tracks repaired where needed.

Team3S: Timing marks on the crank Pulley (Continuation: Prayer didn't
help...)
Tyson,
The first thing you want to verify is static timing. Pull the #1
spark plug. Insert a long blade screwdriver. Use a socket
wrench to turn the crankshaft bolt. You can watch the screwdriver go
up and down. It is fairly easy to determine top dead center this
way. Tell us where the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley ends
up. It should line up with the "0" on the BTDC gauge. Then,
when you know the crankshaft is at TDC, you can check your camshaft marks.
If they are way off, rotate the crank another 360 degrees. If static
timing is good, then check timing while the engine is running. Don't
forget to ground the brown timing ground, or you will see very advanced
timing (as you described below).
Good luck,
Ken

Jeff and others. Help with a head question
Got a guy whom wants to sell me a pair of heads for $500. They came out of
a '91 DOHC N/A. The guy (and he seems to know what he is talking about)
says that the only difference is that the exhaust cams would need to be
swapped out which he says is a piece of cake. I would be reusing my cams,
but I don't feel bad about that because I measured them last year and they were
at like-new spec, so they should be ok now.
My car again is a '92 VR4. I have the adjustable CAS.
#1 Will these heads fit my car and my CAS after the exhaust cams are
switched? #2 Are cams easy to install? (special tools?) #3 Is $500 for a
pair of heads with a full valve job on them and surfacing a good deal? It
sounds good to me...
Thanks in advance for the advice. Jeff, I tried to look at that diagram you
sent the email about. I cant make heads or tails of it. I hope that
someone with engine experience could just tell me if these will
work.

for the vent. Can anyone
give me some suggestion which one to check? Thank

Never? That is a very generalizing word. When I had my caps
replace, I suppose the TV repairman may have cleaned up the fluid that had
leaked out. After all, that is common sense. My board did not smell
afterwards and there was no visual indicators that anything was amiss. The
repairman said that he had some slight difficulty doing the job because of
the protective coating on the board. Looking at my ECU, I did not
see any spots on it where the capacitor fluid had eaten away the
coating. I am only speak from my experience.
It took the TV repairman that replace my caps 15 minutes to do it. My
car runs fine and I have had no problems with it. If you want to pay
for a 2 hour job then that is your preference. I just think that you
will be wasting your money since every other post I have seen on the
subject says that it is basically a $25 job for a professional TV
technician.
