The ticking may be caused by carbon buildup on the pistons. There
is a Technical Service Bulletin on this. The remedy is to add the
Dodge supercleaner to the gas.

RE: Team3S: 60k done, now I have problems
This is a copy of a Dodge factory service bulletin on fixing the tick using
the "Supercleaner." The part number is at the bottom. The
theory is that carbon is built up on pistons and this will clean it
off.
Vehicle: Dodge Stealth
TSB Number: 09-21-93: Group: Engine: Date: Dec.
31, 1993
Subject: Carbon Buildup On Top of Piston
Symptom/Condition:
Symptoms vary from light ticking, to a
ticking/hammering to a hammering/knocking noise as the carbon buildup
increases with mileage and time. The noise is constant and more pronounced when
the engine is cold. However, it may disappear when the engine warms up.
The noise is most noticeable during idle, but will get louder as engine
speed increases.
Discussion:
Carbon buildup is a relatively new condition that occurs
during the combustion process and results from certain compounds in
gasoline. These compounds form deposits on the top of the piston and cause
contact between the cylinder head and the piston. The condition affects all
gasoline engines and is industry wide. The brand of fuel and the type of
detergents used by the gasoline supplier significantly contribute to the
condition. Also, vehicles used in city traffic or light duty cycle
operation are more prone to incurring the condition.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Make sure that all vehicle systems are operating as
designed. Using the Mopar Diagnostic System or the Scan Tool (DRB II) with
appropriate diagnostic procedure manual, verify that all engine systems
are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are present,
record them on the repair order for future reference, and repair as
necessary.
2. If all engine systems are functioning as designed, ask the customer
about the fuel that is being used in the vehicle. If there is a question
about the quality of the fuel, suggest that only fuels which are
"warranted" by the gasoline company against the build up of deposits be used.
Repair Procedure:
The use of Mopar Fuel Injector Cleaner has shown
reasonable results in removing carbon buildup deposits.
Add one bottle of Mopar Fuel Injector Cleaner (P/N 4318007) to a full tank
of gas.
CAUTION:
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THIS FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER BE
ADDED TO A PARTIALLY FILLED FUEL TANK. ALSO, LIQUID CLEANERS ADDED THROUGH
THE ENGINE INTAKE SYSTEM COULD RESULT IN BENT CONNECTING RODS DUE TO
HYDROSTATIC LOCK.
Mopar fuel injector cleaner is not intended for continuous
use. Owners should be advised of the cause of the noise problem and a
recommendation should be made to try other brands of gasoline.

Complete Bearing kit and synchros??
Hey guys I just recently bought a 92 VR4 to add to my collection. Does
anyone
know of where one can purchase complete synchros and complete bearing
kit for
our 5-speed trannies- basically everything one needs to complete a
synchro
rebuild?? I know that CCS supplies the synchros, but have had
no luck in
contacting anyone there for the past few days. Thought Id
ask someone who
might have already done a synchro rebuild themselves.
Thanks in advance for
any and all info.

The fuel-tank additive stuff only gave me about a 6-month reprieve from the
ticking when I had carbon build-up. What got rid of it completely,
never to come back was another Mopar product, Mopar Combustion Chamber
Cleaner (a.k.a. Conditioner). I sprayed a half of a can into each
cylinder with the spark plugs out and let it sit overnight. Then I sucked
out all the gunk, spun it a few times with the starter, buttoned
everything back up, and blew all the rest out the tailpipes when she
turned over. Awesome stuff.

and CEL
Okay, two q's tonight.
I was driving down the highway, and all of a sudden my CEL went on. I went
to Autozone, they can't read it ('95 vr4 - hybrid). I went to the dealer,
they wanted $80 to plug in the scanner! So I remembered there's a way of
jumpering two pins on the obdii connector to get it to blink out the code,
but i can't find which pins they are. Any ideas?
The other q is this - i've been running mobil1 15w50 in the summer. Now i'm
switching to my winter oil (michigan/chicago driving - i.e. pretty cold).
I was thinking of getting 5w30. Is that a good way to go? Or should i get
10w30
Thanks,
Alex.

VR-4 value question
Hey guys-im in an interesting situation.
My friend has decided to sell his 94 VR-4 and move on to an RX-7. He
wants
18,000$ for it.
The car's body is in terrible shape. The interior is also pretty messy. 4
New
tires are also needed. There is also an oil leak from somewhere,
but i
haven't been able to determine where from yet. ALL the speakers r
blown.
On the positive side it has Konig rims, a K&N FIPK, and a downpipe. It
also
has a brand new tranny.
Is it worth it to trade in my N/A for this TT, or wait for a better
deal?

Agreed 100% From your description, your friend has his head in a cloud.
Agreed 100% on the RX7 part rotary is fun but needs to be taken care of.
Also, why would he be downgrading his sports car? Ether way, he is your
friend you likely know more. Far as the value, 18k is WAY too much. You
can get 1st Gen VR4 aprox 50-70K for around $10k in very good shape. If you want
a second Gen, look it up on NADA. DO NOT USE KELLY BLUEBOOK!! KBB is not a
car value! It is an insurance/lender value which includes a ton of other
junk. For a real value for any car go to

Have fun.

Dude, you need to find a new friend. He's trying to sell you, what sounds
like, a terribly maintained VR4 for 2-3 times what it's worth. If you want
to pay $18,000 for a VR4 you can find much better deals than this. I
bought my '92 a year ago and paid $10k for it. Be patient, do some looking
and the car that you want will come around.

Yea, shopping is everything. It took me 6 months to find but I found my '92
VR4 for $9k 2 and a half years ago in absolute perfect shape exempt for a
few dings in the rims and high mileage (for which I do not care,
everything was/is in tip top shape)
If you want a TT also consider a Dodge. They are about 25-30% cheaper for
the same year/trim/miles

Re: Team3S: VR-4 value question
True true, I found my VR-4 at a dealership, a Mitsubishi dealership
nonetheless. After haggling and walking out of their office twice I ended
up paying 9k for it, that was with a 6 month 6,000 mile warranty. It's got
94.5k on the motor and they replaced the tranny for free because I the
third gear synchro broke, and I ended up buying a new clutch and resurfaced
flywheel. All in all a good deal though. Just look around and you'll find
one for an awesome price

Mike,
I agree with everyone that has posted a reply so far. Be
patient, and you will find something better. We got our 92 Stealth
R/T TT at the end of June this year. It had 126,000 MI. on it, but it was
one owner, no exterior damage, (other than rock chips in the paint) and the
interior is like brand new. We paid $8500.00 for it. I would not
jump at this one, for the price and all the neglect, you are just asking
for problems. Good Luck, Dave Thrower

You won't have to wait long... Your friend(?) may *want* $18k,
but..., we all
have fantasies. The other member replies to you were "on
the money" - that
car is maybe worth $10k. We've had two members sell
94 turbos in the last
couple of months-- never raced, garaged, excellent
shape inside and out with
low mileage (33k and 45k) for $18k and $17.5k,
respectively. Check the
references in the other replies, the 3S Prices
page from the FAQ on our Team3S
website (
www.Team3S.com/FAQ-3Sprices.htm),
and listings for cars in your area
on
www.autotrader.com. You'll see that a
well-maintained '94 VR4 is around
$17k; a similar TT is around $15k.
And those are dealer prices! Privately,
they can be found for even
less.
Be patient, and shop around; and that includes talking to some
dealers. (Find
'em on autotrader.com). Remember that you have
something to bargain with -
your '97 SL is worth MORE than a '94 turbo model
of either flavor 3S... (Yes,
wait for a 2nd gen!). You should be
able to get a '94 turbo with a dealer
warranty (and maybe even a new set of
tires) as a straight trade for your car.
Happy bargaining!

nearly as much for one in poor condition some five and a half
