Okay, I'm a bit of a lurker on this list, but I have a question I'm sure
some of you can answer.

There has got to be a way to replace just the lower balljoint and not the
entire lower control arm, does anyone have a part number or a source for the
lower ball joint?

I wish you were right.

I had both of mine done 2 weeks ago.  Before then I looked everywhere for
other options but to no avail; I just had to bite the bullet and swallow the
cost (and believe me that wasn't easy).

I'm sorry to say, but it's all or nothing.

Yep, or at least it's implied in to the STIM.  The steering angular velocity
sensor is the only sensor unique to the anti-roll functionality, so I
ass-u-me that it is the sensor of interest.  I also ass-u-me that the reason
Chuck called it an "anti-roll" sensor because he got a ECS failure code out
of his car and that it referred to the "antiroll sensor".  But I could be
wrong :)

I have a 1992 Dodge Stealth N/A. According to the manual you cannot put
a trailer hitch onto this car. If this information is wrong I would very
much like to know the limitations of towing with a Stealth. I need the
ability to tow as I am building a hovercraft and want to be able to tow
it.

Thanks for any advice that you have.

Subject: Team3S: car hauler for VR4

Thanks to all who posted advice concerning a car hauler for my VR4!

I wound up buying an 18 foot (or 20 foot) car hauler with two 3500lb axles
and electric brakes on one axle ($1450).  The trailer has a "dovetail" and
5' ramps.  I still have to put wooden pre-ramps under the 5' ramps and
wooden ramps on top of the deck to load the car without scraping the
expansion box of the exhaust at the lowered "track height".  In trying to
load, I managed to expedite a repair of the flex section of the exhaust that
I've been needing for a while.  The car is secured to the trailer with a
chain to the rear two shipping hooks and two nylon straps with winches to
the front two shipping hooks.

I hauled the trailer and car with a 2002 Land Rover Discovery from Houston
to the National Gathering and back.  The only problem was a short in the
trailer wiring, caused by some assembler too lazy to run the wire through a
penetration in the frame.  Instead, they ran it between the frame and the
deck.  By the time I got to Elkhart, three wires had shorted together, also
burning up my powered trailer light controller.  The guy who sold me the
trailer paid the $100 it took to make the repairs on the road.

BTW Thanks to John Adams who stayed up until midnight at the Gathering
trying to help me isolate the problem!  Anybody know his email address?  I
can't find a link to email him from his website.

A hovercraft! WOW!
http://www.hoverclubofamerica.org

I have seen some videos of those and always wanted to own one, ride it and
maybe race it too. For some wicked reason, in many videos that I saw they
showed them crash into trees, kinda like this:
http://www.hovercrafts.freeserve.co.uk/pics/darrenw.jpg
I still want to ride it one day. You need lots of cross-terrain open space
to really enjoy it.
...

You should be able to attach a trailer hitch to your N/A somehow. Some rear
structural body panels on an N/A might be a little different, but it is
unlikely that they are different so that the hitch won't fit. Jeff V. is
our local expert on the N/A vs. AWD body. If you provide him with a sketch
of a hitch, he should be able to tell you if it would fit. His N/A to AWD
conversion page is at http://www.geocities.com/jvanorsdal/awd.htm. But hey,
you are a handyman yourself if you are building such an machine as a
hovercraft. You will be able to make that hitch fit.

However, towing anything of this size with a 3.0L car is not really
recommended. I used to tow a motorcycle on a light trailer behind a 2.0L
car (only 200 lbs and almost no wind resistance). The car ran, but it was
hard to get it to go 75 mph uphill. After one season of driving like that I
had to sell the car because the engine lost some of its power and I thought
that it might not survive another season. If you have to drive at >50% of
the throttle for any continuous period of time, that is too much load for
an engine to handle, IMHO. It all depends at what speeds you will drive it
and what hills you need to climb.

Good luck and enjoy your hovercraft. Show us some pictures when it is ready.

The key to hauling with a trailer is to use common sense --- you don't tow
a 4000# trailer at 90 mph up a steep grade. A small trailer or a lightly
loaded trailer e.g. less than 1000#  should be no problem at moderate
speeds. When climbing a grade use a lower gear and keep boost to a
minimum. I've used mine for multiple race events with absoutely no problems.
The N/A should have even less problems as the turbo abuse would probably
be the worst issue.

I own the Rocky Mountain Radar+Laser Jammer and Radar Detector.  It is a
small unit the size of a regular radar detector.  It protects from the
front, but detects 360 deg.  Owning one (my brother has one too) for the
past 4-5 years has jammed many troopers/local copucinos privacy invading
equipment.  It does work.  A local Michigan 3SI member (is also on Team
3S list) has tested it in person against one particular band police
radar gun.  The jammer jammed the speed signal for the cop until he got
within 200-300 feet.  Then the cop could read his speed.  This is
documented in the literature for the unit.

The reason you probably see some bad publicity for this unit is because
someone is trying to promote a different unit.

What bands does it jam?  Does it jam all 3 (X, K and Ka)?  Does it actually
jam the signal or does it emmit a dummy signal that allows you to program in
your own speed?  Many police radar guns can detect jamming.  Does this one
trip their jamming alert?

I have not had a traffic ticket since 94.  Strangly enough that was the same
year that my radar and lazer detectors were stolen.  Beats me.

This makes me want to take off my front license plate or at least make sure
it is always dirty or cover it somehow.  Since I have a 1st gen car with the
pop up lights, I don't have to worry about them reflecting off of my
headlights unless they are targetting me at night.  I havn't seen cops use
lazer at night.

I also own a Rocky Mountain Phantom, which is just the jammer, not the
detector.  I've read the different magazine articles saying it is worthless
(after I bought it, or I never would have.)  I have not gotten a ticket
since I got it, and have been going more than 15 over (once on a bridge and
once on a road leading to a highway) at least twice where I saw the cop
actively radaring.

The one on the bridge was a sting setup where one cop was actually standing
on the side radaring while there were about 10 cop cars waiting for him to
give them the signal apparently.  There were 3 people pulled over ahead, and
about 7 more waiting to pull people over.  I didn't get pulled over.  The
other time I saw the cop with the radar gun sort of pointed out the drivers'
window.  Both times I slowly slowed down, and kept going.

I've also (apparently) jammed the "your speed is xx" signs on the highway,
but someone on 3si.org said that they are only supposed to pick up your
speed if you are very close to it, which is what happened, whether that was
from the jamming or some kind of design limitation I don't know.

The unit is supposed to block the signal completely, as if the officer was
pointing it in the wrong direction or something.

Subject: RE: Team3S: Trailer hitches

I know trailer hitches can be installed on our cars - my son's first '93 VR4
had such a hitch.  Over the last month, I have learned three general
principles for towing: 1) you don't want the gross weight of the trailer and
it's payload to exceed the weight of the towing vehicle 2) you don't want
the tongue weight of the trailer plus the rear portion of the towing car's
weight to exceed the capacity of the rear axle and 3) there are devices for
redistributing tongue weight back to the trailer that help short wheel base
vehicles towing big trailers. If you are not loading the rear seats with
passengers or the luggage compartment with heavy gear, you will probably
recover some capacity for tongue weight on the rear axle.  If you can lift
the tongue of the trailer easily by hand without a jacking system, you are
probably quite safe.  You do want some tongue weight.  If you are planning
on a little two-wheeled trailer, like what you might carry a waverunner or
motorcycle, you are probably okay.  There are different classes of hitches
depending on the maximum towing weight.  I think Class III is what I have on
my LandRover to pull my car hauler, a two axle trailer with electric brakes.
A Class II hitch is probably adequate for pulling a little two-wheeled
trailer.

Subject: Team3S: Clutch Question

I have a low disengagement point on a RT TT.  I have not experienced any
shifting problems but I do not drive it very often.  My two daughters and I
bought the car together and I can't pry them out for my turn.  The engage
point is steady but has dropped to 1 inch from floor.  I put in a new clutch
and bearing  which had no effect on the pedal travel, but needed to be done
anyway.  I have searched the historical files of 3S and have found many
similar problems and many solutions which did not appear to work to solve
the problem.  Pumping up the clutch does not change the engage point.  Have
bled it a couple of times and it helps for a day or two, then back to the
floor it goes.  I am guessing a master cyl but would like a little support
in diagnosis before expense and labor.

Car is stock, 116K miles, and was run hard by previous owner, judging by
lack of care and cleanliness when I bought it several years ago.  Engine
does not leak or blow smoke except at initial mash of pedal when turbos
start to come on.  I believe that is the rich condition I have read about in
the search files.  Very little oil in PCV lines to indicate worn rings.

All help and advice is appreciated, questions welcome.

Thanks

Subject: Team3S: Clutch Question (in correct text format)

Subject: Team3S: Sway Bar Bushings - Could this put my knock to rest?

As you guys might know from my previous e-mails, I had my contol arms and
struts replaced 2 weeks ago, but I was still getting a small knock from the
front end.  I put it up last night and after about 1 hour of checking
around, I found play in my sway bar bushings.

Could this be the cause of the small knock coming from my front end, and are
these bushings a "dealer only" item

I would really really appreciate some input, i think I might be getting
close, but you guys are the pros.

Chris

P.S. - I hate diagnosing suspension.

If your sway bar moves around too much in the brackets, it could make a
knocking noise when it contacts the brackets.

I don't know of any aftermarket bushings that are made for the stock
suspension components.  The Mitsubishi part number for the front sway bar
bushings for FWD DOHC models (all years) is MB573836 and is $3.50 from
www.mitsupartsdirect.com.  You may be able to find it elsewhere.

Another option is to get upgraded sway bars while you're in there.  They
have polyurethane bushings, which should be more durable than the stock
rubber ones.  Take a look here:

I took out the TPS but I don't want to break it trying what Jim suggested.
When I turn it by hand its almost like I can feel it hitting flat spots
along the way back to the stop position ? If I do break it where is the best
place to get one ( no hurry ) and about how much will it run me?

yes, in yet another fit of ignorance, I used the generic name rather than
the proper nomenclature.  The steering angular velocity sensor is what
triggers the antiroll action by the ECS.

Is the "the antiroll sensor" the same as the "Steering Angular Velocity"?
