Re: Team3S: Whatever happened to the Plug and Play Coil Upgrade from Summit
Racing
I tried the Accel coil sixpack for Buick GN about a month ago.
Still
haven't send out a report because I thought I needed to process the
data
better (sorry). My conclusion is that the GN sixpack is no better than
the
stock coils.
I had like four tests done and in each of them they
were not better than
stock. I have a little more elaborate typed up report at
home that I will
send soon, but let me recall what I said there:
1)
Butt dyno - no difference.
2) Spark waveform - visually, spark duration
is no longer than stock.
3) Primary coil resistance it the same.
Secondary coil resistance is lower
= fewer turns and less voltage
amplification.
4) Voltage amplification indeed tested lower than stock by
supplying a
small AC voltage to the primary coil.
The solution that
was proven to work, but still needs some quantitative
evaluation is the Accel
motorcycle coils and a DIS-4 ignition amplifier.
Coils, the amplifier, and a
gadget to fool the ECU could be had for about
$550. That is the solution that
I will try next when I am done with my
current open projects (which are 15G's
*DONE!*, engine electronics and
data acquisition, exhaust, FMIC,
...)

I remember about 6 weeks ago Quite a few people were
looking at the GM??
Coil packs as an alternative to the combination Accel
Motorcycle Coils and
MSD system. Whatever happened to this
idea?

Well here's the info I have, on stock turbos you can run a plug
gap of .036
at 16-17 psi on stock turbo's (race gas only). This
was the GN coils only
on what used to be a 95 VR-4 (same guy that I mentioned
earlier who rolled
his car)
His mods were DN precat eliminators, ATR
D/P, and Borla Exhaust, EVC IV
As for installing lets just not go
there...... It was not a simple plug and
play proposition and fabbing
up a bracket to mount the coil pack to were
probably the least annoying
parts. Then of course there is the issue of
changing the coil
side end of your spark plug wires (that slack that NGK
provides got put to
good use)
Any way I will running this coil pack along with the MSD DIS-4
and I should
be all set for spark for a pair of 18 Killers

Yes, they can run stand alone. You unplug your stock stuff,
unbolt
it, bolt in the new stuff and plug it in. Takes about 10 mins
plus
another 20 to take off the stupid intake.
I don't have a whole
lot of neat graphs and formal output, but I can
say that in actual use they
work and they work very well. I've been
running on the prototype for
more than a year now and I still think
its nearly the best mod I've done to
the car. I run .045 gap up to
about 18lbs of boost with the 15g's
without trouble. I could run
quit a bit higher with a DIS-4 if I had
one.
I didn't invent anything new I just spent the time to build a
bracket
that could be mass produced, measure up a proper set of plug
wires,
and gather together all the nuts, bolts, and connectors so it
would
be plug and play. It uses aftermarket coilpacks from
Accell.
Don't take this the wrong way please, but I left
the
marketing/selling/support of them to Matt because there is no way
with
my schedule that I can possibly properly support a product.
Please contact
Dynamic as much as possible, I sometimes go weeks
without checking
email.

I finished the install of my 13g's last
night. I upgraded becasue my
stockers were dieing. So don't get after me
about not upgrading the fuel
system.
Even without any kind of
boost controller the car is stronger that it was
(even with a MBC tuned to
14psi). I hit 9psi in quick in all gears(only
checked 1-3) and hold it to
redline. We ran two long runs withn a
pocketlogger. freeway, crusing and
several quick starts. No knock. I'll post
the logs later. But, to quote my
friend he called the logs "boring". I plan
to install install a walburo
255lp fuel pump and them put the mbc back in
then we'll see what 14psi feels
like 8-)

I own a 1994 3000GT
NA. I have owned the car for a year now and I've had
a problem ever since I
bought it, but it is now worse. When I put the
key in the ignition and turn
it, nothing happens. Sometimes I have to
turn it 2 or 3 times before it
starts. There is no noise, nothing...it's
as if I'm not even turning the key.
It has gotten worse this week to the
point that sometimes I have to turn the
key 15 times before it responds.
Could it be the ignition switch or the
starter or possibly the neutral
switch on the transmission? The transmission
is an automatic. Thanks for
your help.

RE: Team3S: car won't start
Kimberly...
My first suspect would be
the ignition switch. Do you have a volt/ohm
meter? You could check the wires
to the switch and see if they are
getting voltage. You could even fish around
under the dash and wiggle
all the wiring that goes to the ignition and see if
that changes
anything (caution, this could finish breaking a weak
connection).
Looking forward...Chris

I was thinking about removing
the A/C since I rarely use it anyways.
The problem that I forsee is the new
belt size. anyone ever do this
before? How much does the
compressor and condensor weigh? My primary
reason is better air flow
to the radiator (I will put in new shrouds)
but also weight. Is 100lbs
a little optimistic?
While we're at it, can someone explain to me (us, i
should say) how fan
belts and accessory belts are
classified?
Thanks

I
hate to be giving you even more bad news, but a "mechanic" is not what
you
need. Our cars are high performance, and contain a number of exotic
systems
that the average "mechanic" has never even seen. Any repairs
require an
"expert" in Japanese cars (at the very least), preferably someone
who owns a
Manual! To attempt any work on our cars without a manual is
simply taking
wild guesses..., on *your* dime. He might as well be
blindfolded. Bite the
bullet and take it to a dealer, IMO... They
have the proper equipment and
knowledge (via access to a manual) to diagnose
your problem quickly
(hopefully). Even at dealer rates, at least you
won't be paying extra for
someone to experiment as they "learn" your
car.
My own wild guess would be to check the terminals (and strength) of
the
battery. A loose ground, bad contact, or bad battery can cause your
car to
exhibit those symptoms. If you ever left the glove box open
overnight, left
the lights on, or otherwise drained the battery completely,
you probably need
a new one. Even a full recharge will not help in some
cases. Check the
terminals first, to see if they're loose or
corroded. A couple of light
smacks with a hammer to make sure of a
good, tight contact will do...
Good luck!
