Subject: Team3S: "Good Guys List" Dealers and Vendors

I needed an expansion valve for my '97 SL and the first place I looked was
in the FAQ for suppliers.

I live in the St. Louis area.

I noticed Lou Fusz Mitsubishi listed under other dealers.
They are listed, but don't show a discount for Team3S members.

I ordered the part and asked if they offered a discount for Team3S members.
Jeff (The counter guy) said he didn't know about Team3S, but offered me a
15% car club discount.

I thought that was very nice and wanted to mention it here.

Thanks,

Rich

I glanced through some TMO archives, and that seemed to be the consensus,
correct?  I assume this holds true for the pocketlogger as well.  Could
someone tell me what methodology the o2 sensor uses to get its voltage
reading?

thanks,

Subject: Re: Team3S: Transmission popping out of 4th gear on base stealth

Sounds like the same thing that happened to me a little over a month ago.
My original post on it was "Emergency Tranny has lost gears" on 5/11/02.
Although mine is an automatic, your problems sound similar.  I would first
suggest taking it in to a tranny shop and having them replace the filter and
fluid.  Since the shop said that the tubing in my radiator for cooling the
trans fluid was all gunked up, I am also looking into getting an external
trans fluid cooler...  Because twice now my new tranny has started doing the
same thing, just popping out of gear for like 30 seconds.  Seems to be after
driving for a while so I think it's heat related.

Tech question for list:  What AN size fittings should I be looking for when
buying an external trans fluid cooler.  I was looking at Carparts.com but
don't know exactly what to get.  Any suggestions???

Subject: Team3S: trans fluid change

I have a 1994 3000GT NA automatic. How often should the transmission
fluid be changed in the car? Can you tell by smell when the fluid is
worn out? Also, I've been reading the posts for a while and I know that
the manual transmissions give problems. Is this true also with an
automatic? The car has 117,000 miles on it and is NEVER driven hard or
abused in any way.  I am a woman and prefer not to drive my car hard and
I love it too much to take a chance on something happening to it.  You
see, my 3000 is my dream car. For some, it's a Porche or a Ferrari or
whatever, but for me, nothing is greater than my 3000GT. How much
mileage can I expect before having to rebuild the transmission for my
automatic and what should I do to take really good care of it? Thanks
for the info.

Subject: Re: Team3S: trans fluid change

Hi Kimberly:

Here are the answers to your questions on automatic transmissions as far as
I have the knowledge to give you.

First, typical dextron 3 trans fuids should be changed every 10k miles even
though most manuals tell you 30k.

Second, use redline ATF (Redline automatic trans fluid). It can actually go
30k but on my BMW I change it at 10k intervals anyway. The reason is simple.
In an automatice transmission, if you change the fluid regularly, then the
transmission will last indefinitly. If you don't change the fluid then
something will go bad. If it does it may not kill the trans but the damage
will be irreversible. If you change the fluid the chances of damage are
close to zero.

Next - The typical auto trans holds about 6 to 7 quarts of fluid.
Unfortunately at least half of this fluid will not drain when the drain plug
is pulled because it resides in the torque converter. Even if you drop the
filter you will not get much more fluid out.

There are two ways to deal with this. Dealers, and quick change places have
a special apparatus they claim can pull all fluid and put in new stuff. I
think they really can do it but I am not really sure. They charge about 150
dollars to do this and they will put in dextron 3 for replacement fluid.

Because I change my fluid every 10k I never drop or replace the filter. I
just drain the three quarts available and put in 3 quarts of new redline.
(Redline costs about 7-8 bucks a quart but last a lot longer and is better
overall). That way the fluid is constantly refreshed long before the
additives are used up.

The additives in trans fluid are what make it need replacement in the first
place. They get used during normal use. If you don't change the fluid then
the additives disappear altogether and you have a big problem. As far as I
know there are no additive packages you can buy. You have to put in new
fluid.

Finally, "can the condition of the fluid tell you anything?" Yes. If it
smells burned then it probably is way overdue for a change and the trans pro
bably got too hot somehow. Maybe it was low, or maybe too old, or maybe a
hot day in stop and go traffic did it.  Likewise, if it is brown, and not
red then a problem exists.

If your transmission shifts well but the fluid is over 10k miles old then
change it. It is has a problem existing then change it. Hopefully the
problem will get no worse. If you don't change it then the trans is certain
to suffer.

Good luck.

Andy

Subject: Rotors?

I'm sure this has been covered many times but I couldn't find it
in the archives. Where can I get good Rotors for a 93 Base Stealth? My car
is shaking real bad when I brake going down
hills. Suggestions? Also is it better to replace than have them turned
down?
Thanks!

I am not sure about other states,, But I do know that here in NJ and south
eastern PA the ruling on that is anything under 12 seconds needs a cage.
Pretty sure it only requires a 2 point cage and anything 10 and under needs
a 4 point cage. Hope this helps. Anybody agree or disagree with these
numbers?

Theres cage, and theres the rules considering halfshafts and harmonic
balancers as well once you get to those ugly low times.

I just fixed my A/C today.  My problem was the expansion valve just like the
manual said.

Removing the evaporator core was surprisingly easy.  Remove the battery, the
glove box then three screws.  The core practically falls out.

Thanks goes the Andrew Wolf for his help. Sometimes just talking something
out gives one the confidence and ideas to solve the problem.

Thanks again,

Rich

Only thing I disagree with is the number of points... a 2 point cage
(bar, hoop) would be pointless...  Normally a standard roll bar (as seen
in convertibles and such, is either a 4, 5, or 6 point roll bar/hoop....
