Re: Team3S: colors?
In 92 the color purple was called morraco red
pearl. I am not sure what it
was called in 96.
The 60K service
should cost around $1,500 to $1,700 including the water pump
change.
The 60K service does not require a water pump change but very very
very
highly recommended. Did I tell you it was highly recommended.
I
know the wing is different in a 97 and maybe a few other odds and end, but
I
think they are about the same. Some else that knows more about the
exact
difference between the 96 and 97 should answer this
question.

I think the 60K is gonna be around $800 when it is all
said and done. That
needs to be done ASAP if it has 71K on it.
Purple?
Or is it a maroon?
I don't think there are any real disadvantages between
the 96 and 97. I'm
sure that someone on the list will have a more definitive
opinion on this...

the thick side). I
don't try to guess where the middle of the electrode

important than accuracy at this level is consistency

I bend the electrode by bashing the top of it with

Not real elegant, but I seldom have to bend the
electrode back out.

The ECS shocks do not have any wires attached when you buy them
from the
dealer. If you look at the top of the shock you will see where
the
electrical contacts where the plug from your car connects. Also,
something
to note is that both right and left front sides are
identical.

WaterPump is less than $100.
If it
breaks/leaks you have to replace the timing belt
(again).
My
understanding is that there is enough water pump
problems/leaks that it is a
good $100 investment.

RE: Team3S: Suddenly running leaner at WOT
The saga continues.
Following my theory that my problems are due to fuel
pressure, I changed out
my fuel filter. It didn't have any effect, but I
don't know when it was
last done, so it wasn't a waste of time. I didn't
get a fuel pressure
guage...I'm thinking this is what I should do next.
I also did a little
more experimenting with the lean condition. When I
first started up the
car cold (SAFC correction at -4%), I found that the O2
levels were very rich
at WOT runs. I never went past about 3500, since the
engine was
cold. As the engine warmed up, the O2 levels slowly dropped to
what
they've been running at over the last couple of days. I pulled
over,
shut off the car for a minute, and adjusted my S-AFC settings to what
they
ought to be (-20% correction). I started up the car, and for the
next
minute or so, my O2 levels were almost normal, but soon started falling
off.
In both cases, the O2 levels did not fall off sharply; they
gradually
decreased over a minute or two of driving. I know that the
ECU has a richer
start behavior, so I figure that's why my O2 levels were
okay at startup.
It occurred to me that the problem might me that my FPR
wasn't increasing
fuel pressure with boost. If this were the case, the
problem should
manifest during cruise or at WOT. During cruise it's
hard to track down
though, since the ECU has a pretty wide trim range during
closed loop mode.
To test, I ran my car up a 1/2 mile hill, at about 20%
throttle and 2500-3K
RPM. This should have kept it in closed loop
mode. Going up the hill under
about 6 PSI boost, the O2 levels were
almost pegged full lean (.00 to .02
volts). If the computer were truly
in closed loop mode, I think that means
the ECU ran out of trim range.
What does all this mean? I don't know. My gut feeling still
points to fuel
pressure, so that's what I'm going to pursue. I'll
perform the fuel pump
relay bypass, and check the fuel pressure.
Hopefully, I'll also be able to
try temporarily installing a FPR from another
VR-4.
If you've taken the time to read the small novels I've been
posting, thanks.
It's helpful to me just to write it down. :)

Team3S: S-AFC users: What are your Karman values?
My car is
currently running lean, and I'm trying to rule things out. I don't
think my
S-AFC is the problem. It is however, a good tool to check out some
other
values, specifically Karman frequencies.
If other S-AFC users (VR-4s)
could post the following, it would be VERY
helpful:
- - Karman value
at idle (note RPMs as well)
- - Karman value at steady 2000 RPM, car in
neutral
- - Karman value at steady 3000 RPM, car in neutral
If
you're willing to go take a drive, the following would also help:
- -
Karman value at 2000 RPM cruise, flat road
- - Karman value at 3000 RPM
cruise, flat road
Here's how to check your Karman values:
- - Go to
the Monitor menu
- - Select 2, 3, or 4 parameters (doesn't matter)
- -
Make sure one of selected values is KAR
- - Cycle through to the number
display
Thanks in advance,

If I had known to say "when

HI Brian - while I can't help you
directly in solving your problem, if
you're going to do the relay bypass (I
did because my relay, while working,
was rusty). You might also want to
do the old DSM trick of running a hot
wire directly to a relay near the pump,
using the stock hot lead as the
trigger for the relay putting full voltage to
the pump (probably a lousy
description). Someone on 3Si has a write-up
if you need it, I can try to
find it (also the DSM Vfaq has it and it is the
same mod).
Hope this helps - have you opened up your ECU (don't remember
if you have).

It's helpful to me just to write it down. :)
