Subject: RE: Team3S: TOB or broken tranny?

Don't want to step on any toes or nit-pick or anything, but our TOB have
ball-bearings, not needle :)
My TOB would not rattle when the clutch was out, but it would make a
grinding noise when in. I guess the sealed unit wasn't so sealed :)
Eventually, it completely seized.. pushing the clutch in would cause a
high pitched squeal and the engine to die from the "braking" effect it
caused on the pressure plate. I took it out and found ball bearings all
piled up in the bellhousing, the pressure plate fingers ground down to
nothing.

I know this has been rehashed many times, but working on a customers car
immediately after he bought it we heard a rattle that the previous owner
had assumed to be rod-knock.. we figured it was TOB-rattle. Turned out
to be the input shaft going south. Tranny crapped out on him a few hours
after we finished his 60k service. TOB-like rattle doesn't necessarily
mean TOB is going out.

Also.. I'm not so sure when the clutch is out the TOB is NOT spinning.
The pedal not being adjust right could cause the TOB to ride the
pressure plate even with the clutch out causing premature wear.. When my
TOB seized.. even the slightest touch of the pedal would move the TOB
into contact with the pressure plate causing a squeal. Not attacking
anyone here, but I know some people like to drive with their foot
slightly touching the clutch pedal.. thinking it wont affect wear.. It
does!.. if you're not shifting, your foot should be on the foot rest not
on the pedal.

The needle bearings become
stressed and the rattle stops. The rattle can be the result of too
little
grease, or a missing needle, or just wear in one or more of the needles
themselves. IMHO if the rattle is not too bad, and there are no unusual

Wouldn't it make more sense to wire it from the alternator, not the battery,
that's where the power comes from?

The difference is that rewiring means

The alternator isn't always pumping out maximum voltage.  Also, the
battery is getting the power, if properly charged it is at max. voltage and
it's more conveniently located for access.
In case anyone asks there are instructions on the rewire on 3si.org.

Subject: Team3S: Hood Scoops

FYI--after searching for hood scoops to replace the blisters on my 92 rt I
found some from Lund. They are LD8002 parts number and are for a Chevy S-10
pickup. In the catalogs they are the medium Eclipse scoops. The measurements
in the catalogs are not correct. They show 14'' wide but really only 12&1/2
wide, also you could trim a 1/4" off each side to make a cleaner look ( I
didn't--looks good ). The scoops are put on by 3m tape so there is no
drilling. They are fully functional and do let a lot of hot air out. I'll
try to post pictures today. Have a great day. Mike S 92 rt tt

Subject: Team3S: 18" Mitsu VR4 Wheels...

I just purchased a used set of 18" Mitsubishi VR4 wheels from a private
party.  I notice that the area around the lugs has a sandblasted effect.
The remainder of the wheels are shiny chrome and in excellent condition.  Is
this sandblasted effect normal on these wheels?  Did some years have the
effect while others didn't?  Or were these wheels re-chromed with this
"feature" added at that time?

Any info would be greatly appreciated...
Thanx...

I used to tie-wrap my Apexi solenoid to the neck of the windshield washer
bottle.  Now I have it tie-wrapped to the cruise control motor on the
firewall behind the washer bottle.  Both places work great.  You just have
to remove the solenoid from the washer bottle every time you're working down
there.

The is a very common noise.  It most likely is not the throw-out bearing,
but most likely bearings inside the tranny.  When I installed my clutch &
new TOB, the noise still remained.  Even my Kormex rebuilt tranny developed
the noise after a few thousand miles.

Good luck,
Ken

Subject: Re: Team3S: Short block wanted for a 1991 Stealth RT T/T...

The cost from one of the list's discount Mitsubishi dealers should be around
$2600 USD.  Shipping to Oslo is another story though.

You might want to consider upgrading to the 93+ 4-bolt main shortblock.  A
couple of folks have web sites on the other parts you'll need.

Good luck,
Ken

What do you guys think do DR650's produce more power than GTpro 357's?
Here is the link to the Group buy for DR650's no price yet since it depends on how many orders.
