While this info is somewhat dated (1986-87), I was running a mid-11
second street car w/o rollbar at several NHRA tracks (Oregon & CA), just
slowing it down to 12.00 (1/4-mi) or 8.00 (1/8-mi) per the rules.  The
7.99 limit was the local track rule, and more restrictive than the NHRA
rule for 1/8-mile.  Nobody ever threatened to tear up my timeslips, but
I would usually get a handwritten warning on my timeslip if I ran below
11.99 during time trials.  If I made a breakout pass (which I frequently
did if either driver redlighted in eliminations), nobody complained.  I
finally put a NHRA-compliant rollbar in the car, and lightened it up in
other areas to maintain the same weight.

Darren,

The rules at the track we (MN3s) go to are basically, if you go faster
than
14.0, then no passenger, always wear a helmet even if you are in the
20's,
and anything under 11.99 you are required to have a roll cage of some
sort.
Convertibles are not generally allowed unless you have a roll cage as
well,
although they must of never heard of a VR-4 Spyder since Matt J. has
never
been called on it. They are very serious about this at Rock Falls (Wis),
they will check your car out after a sub 12 run and if no cage, you are
on
your way home, no warnings. I have seen them do it.

Just what I have seen.

Darren,

You bring up a good point.  You also threw a wrench into my spring upgrade
plans.  I was looking forward to a easy 60lb. weight reduction with a set of
seats.  Now this will likely be eclipsed by the weight of a roll-bar.  Do
you have any pics, weight, or pricing info?

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Race seat and harness safety (was: RE: Team3S: Fog Light bulb
replacement)

Reminder to all with race seats and/or harnesses or who are thinking
about getting them ... it is illegal if not just downright silly to put
a race seat and/or harness in your car and not install a rollbar or
rollcage.  No proper tech crew will allow your car to pass for obvious
reasons (stated below).  Check with the group you drive with or the
track you drive on to see what their safety requirements are.

The reason a rollbar or rollcage is required is when you strap yourself
into a race seat (or a stock seat) with a safety harness then you limit
your movement.  In the event of a rollover your head will not be the
tallest thing in the cockpit and will get squashed like a grape.  With
the stock 3-point harness you can lean to either side or to the front
but a 5- or a 6-point harness prevents this.

Sorry ... getting my noggin crushed is a little bit of a sensitive
subject with me so I try to make sure people are aware as many times
those who buy race seats from one place and harnesses from another are
not offered this advice.  Before you spend $1,000 or more, get it
installed all pretty like, and submit your Driver's Ed fee and drive to
the track -- I don't want you to be turned away because you don't have a
rollbar (and those street bars that are for show don't count).

I have a contact for anyone who needs more information.  Ken Myers,
Ken@IOPortRacing.com or www.ioportracing.com, is a great source and is
where I purchased my Autopower Race Rollbar from.  Great place.  Good
source of knowledge.  Let me know if you have any questions, concerns,
or comments.

All,

I have recently been contacted about making a y-pipe retainer I've been
using for the last 2 yrs. available.  This design is simply a yoke that
holds the stock y-pipe in place for those of us who don't wish to buy an
aftermarket y-pipe.  Mine has functioned at 18psi without fault.  The yoke
could easily be milled out on a production CNC.  Like all things of this
nature, the price is heavily dependent on quantity.  If you would like more
info or pics, please email me.

Folks:

Here's more information on the bushings:

This all came about from my conversations with our local (Portland, OR
area) 3Si tuner, when I was getting my rear-differential leak checked.  There
isn't anyone to his knowledge who makes bushings specific to our cars; however,
he stated that it wouldn't be a major issue (the tricky part is the bracket) in
adapting an Energy Suspension Universal bushing set for installation with our
anti-sway bars.  He also stated that he's done this before on another 3000GT
car.  I think he placed an order only for the frame bushings, and not for the
end links.  I didn't know to ask about it until I visited the Energy Suspension
webpage to read more about the bushings.

I have also sent an email to the Energy Suspension folks asking them if
they will manufacture bushings that are specific to our cars (they already have
complete bushing sets for the Eclipse) if there is enough interest generated
from the customer base (3Si members.)  I'll update y'all when/if I hear back
from them.

The bushings for my car will arrive in a week or two.  I'll update you
after the installation.

The yoke is located at the throttle body.  Very simple and effective.  I can
appreciate that those who dropped $200+ for a new y-pipe could find any
number of reasons to convince themselves of why this solution is
undesirable.

I don't know how the heck you guys do that.  Honestly, I thought these cars
had some kind of system to prevent this because my 95VR-4 feels like I hit a
gate when I try to go from a real high gear at high rpm into a lower one.  I
do not have a grinding synchro or bad synchros because the car will upshift
rapidly with no resistance.  I can jam it in the gear if I really try to,
but I use very little force on the shifter even drag racing, so when I feel
too much resistance, I double clutch and try again.

I cant tell for sure because I don't know which colors they had when.

My guess is they are the same but I don't know that for sure.

If it makes ya feel any better, that's the same side mirror as on my '93
3000...

I would think they are all the same, but color may vary...  Also, some
may/may not have power adjustments...

Hey folks, I just spotted a passenger side mirror in ebay, red, says
it's
off of a 92 Stealth.

It just so happens that the only broken exterior part on my red Stealth
is
the passenger side mirror, so I thought I'd bid on it but wanted to
check
with anyone who's awake who can tell me whether all models had the same
mirrors...?

The only real difference is some are heated, and some are not.
The connectors are different, so they are NOT interchangable.

Subject: Team3S: what is the optimum a/f reading at WOT?  how to hook up?

What voltage should I see for a good mixture of performance and fuel economy
(I know they are not too compatible with each other) :)

I purchased the Jumptronix A/F meter with the digital display (thanks for
the site XWING) and was wondering what the best reading was.  Also, for any
of you that have used this, how do I go about hooking this thing up?

thanks,
Bill
