I have replaced the ignition computer behind the console twice now and am
waiting on the third unit to come in.  I have heard there may be a module or
component associated with the distributor that can actually knock out the
computer itself, and that is what I may need to replace.  Can anyone give me
any details?  (I am completely disconnecting the battery before replacing
computer.)
I have a '91 ES version with DOHC, approx. 75,000 miles.

The most common is the ISC or IAC.  Both the same thing.  It's a brown
colored plug behind the throttle body (Attached to it though).  I think
the motor wears out and dead shorts the connection.  Your car will run
without the ISC plugged in, so try that, and hopefully someone else has
some thoughts on this.

We delved through the NHTSA website and retrieved the most recent versions
of every Recall and TSB that they have in their archive for the Stealth &
3000GT.  Some of the records include a full summary with corrective action,
while others are simply listings with descriptions.  You may order full
copies of the documents for a small nominal fee, directly from the NHTSA
website, which is linked from our page.  Check it out at:

hello:

currently i have falken ziex 502 P275/40/17 tires on the front and 255/40/17
tires on the rear mounted on mustang cobra wheels on my stealth r/t 92. i
bought the car this way except the smaller (255 mm) tires were on the front.
i had them switched later.

now i'm thinking of changing 255 mm tires (worn out) to 275 mm ones of the
same brand (falken ziex 502). i never felt any interference from the tires.

does anybody know anything why it may be a bad idea to have the above
mentioned tires (275 mm) on a stealth r/t 92? (aside from the hydroplaning
issue that i'm painfully aware of)

thank you very much.

1) If you already know they are a hazzard..why?
2) 275 tire, hope its a 9" wheel or wider.  (personal preference)

A little help please!!  When braking, even mildly, my ABS comes on!!!!
No dash lights.  Plenty of brake fluid.  My pads (outboard - I've not
taken the wheels off yet) look worn but not to the rivets.  Rear pads brand
new.  Just had the clutch changed.  Didn't do this prior to that job.

Any thoughts???

I would unplug the ABS fuse under the hood and see if the same hardness
application locks up the tires.  This would indicate that it is not the
ABS that is messed up but the brake bias or how hard the brakes are
getting squeezed when you press the pedal.

If the tires do not lock up then it is the ABS that is faulty.  Is this
correct?

Remember that there are sensors on the wheels and the ABS might not be
sensing wheel movement and trying to apply 100% braking all at once.

I know Jim Berry does his open track events without the ABS fuse.  Maybe
he can give some insight.

Let us know and be safe when braking.

Subject: another question

HI Jim,   I have a question and maybe you can help.

Well I got the Getrag 6 speed back together with little trouble.  I am having an issue with the
shift linkage on the tranny.  It seems I forgot where two parts go.

On the side of the tranny where the shift shaft goes into it.  There are tow detent spring loaded
ball bearings that go in on the side to assist shifter alignment.  One screws in flat and the other
is this three inch cap bolt that stick out after it is screwed in.  I cannot find a picture to refer
to.  I went to the dealer and can't et a look see.

Is it posible that you could look at your VR4 from underneath or on top  down on the side of the
tranny by the starter and tell me if the three inch cap sticking out goes in the hole close to the
upper side by the shifter top or the lower hole closer to the bottom of the trans.

both parts fit interchangeable iot appears and I am not sure which hole is for what.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
AH

If he's referring to the cover plate over the shift fork detents then both bolts should be
about the same length --- 20mm or so in length. The cover plate holds in the two
springs and steel balls that form the detent for the shafts on the shift forks. I have no
idea why there would be a 3" bolt if that's the area he's talking about.

PPS --- my car has the 5 speed, but I wouldn't expect it to be any different.

"...replaced the ignition computer...twice now and am waiting on the third
unit to come in."

Like you, I replaced the ECU without any significant effect. I remembered
reading somewhere in the Archives about new batteries with low initial
voltage affecting the ECU. I had been cranking my engine for sometime and
decided to put the battery on the charger. After the battery was fully
charged, the engine initially did not run smoothly, but at least it started.
I held constant 2000 RPM for about 20 minutes and the engine continued to
smooth out.

Might give it a try.

Regards, Fred

Subject: Team3S: ABS Coming On!!

Robert,

Thanks for your input.  I bought a new 60 AMP ABS fuse and it blew
instantly and the ABS dash light stayed on.  Driving without the fuse
installed, the brakes seemed to work just fine.  I reinstalled the old
fuse, the dash light went out and the braking problem (ABS coming on
with moderate braking pressure) resumed.

I"m taking the car back to the mechanic that changed the clutch, but he
shared this very interesting  bit of  info with me.  He said that he was
unable to remove the shafts.  They were 'frozen'.  So he dissassembled
some other part of the suspension in order to get the tranny out and
change the clutch.  He did say that he used some lubricant in his effort
to get the half shafts out, but ultimately he couldn't get them to
come.  Maybe the lubricant he used has caused a problem.

I really don't know why the new fuse would blow.  And I guess I really
can't understand why replacing a good fuse would have any effect on this
problem.

Thanks for your input.

I can give you a real good start with this.....I hade the same problem.

DO NOT GO TO A DEALER!!!!!!

You have two fuses that have to do with the ABS. spend 20.00 and just
replace them both. One of the fuses has bolts holding down, this one os
hard
to come out if you use pliers to pull it..trust me I pulled it out with
pliers only to find a socket fits very easily under it to unbolt it. I
believe its called the fuseable link? Regardless it has ABS on it. This
fixed my problem almost instantly even though an ohm meter said
otherwise.

I took mine to the dealer and they told me my float was stuck in the
master
cylinder...they told me I needed to replace ther whole assembly for
500.00
you can buy just the tank with float for about 25.00 at the parts
counter.
You might also hit your ABS sensors with a blast of air from a
compressor.
Brake dust can make them work funny which might cause your problem as
well.

Thats all under 50.00.......I would do that
