Subject: Team3S: Electronic controlled suspension

I have been having problems with my ECS.  The dash light is flashing and the
suspension seems to be stuck in the stiff mode.  Is there a way to
deactivate it?  And what can be done other than putting in new struts?

I did have someone look at it and said it looked OK from all the diagnostic
checks.  So that probably means that it checks out electrically then.  Could
it be possible that this is a mechanical problem that will go away by
itself?  How does the ECS work exactly, what constricts the orifice in the
shock to stiffen the ride?  And if I need it to be replaced what is the best
way to go?

Hi Michael,

I think you need a new diagnostician for your ECS. Obviously if the
shock is stuck in stiff or hard mode then something is wrong. Take a
look at the STIM (Stealth Technical Information Manual) at my web
site and the Service Manuals for explanations of function and
diagnostics.

http://www.geocities.com/lutransys/jlucius/2-stim.htm

Looking briefly at STIM page 2-17 I see that the shock is stuck in
hard mode when the damping force changeover actuator is "abnormal".
I'm not saying this is the problem, just suggesting that you
carefully read the manuals to get an idea of the problem and to
better understand the functioning of the ECS system.

If you need to replace the shock and want to use a factory
replacement (there are no aftermarket ECS replacements for us), I
suggest using one of the discount dealers I list on the Garage Page
at my web site.

Good luck.

I went through this as well, and it turned out to be the PoopBoy's
installer that used a pnematic impact wrench, in a clockwise sequence
(not star) to excessively/unevenly tighten the wheel after tire
replacement. She actually bent/warped the rotor (or I did while
braking, due to her uneven torquing), and in a day or so, I had wheels
that vibrated the steering wheel. I took it for re-balancing twice,
finally took it to someone else, and the checked the rotors and found
the warp. I didn't have warped rotors before, and also didn't have a
problem with vibration.

Pepboys had to install new rotors for free (but I had to pay for the
parts). They also stuck a piece of gum under my door handle, so that
was the last time I used them for repair work. This was way back in 95
or so on my Talon  BTW :)

PS: They also put 2 directional tires on backwards haha... doh! So
instead of dispersing water, they would scoop it through the middle of
the tire, and I was able to surf my car to school on rainy days
(hydroplane). They were angry that they had to deal with me so much,
hence the gum, but it was their own damn fault.

Stick with GL-5 in the rear diff (is there a GL-6?). Mitsu recommends
SAE 90, 85W-90, or 80W-90 if the temp is above -10ºF - that pretty
much covers 99.999% of driving situations in the conterminous United
States. :)

Red Line synthetic should do a good job or consider using a BG
concentrate additive if available.

Hey guys :(

I was driving my 91' 3000GT VR4 Twin Turbo (78k miles) home from a store
the other weekend, and I noticed some faint steam coming from my hood.  It
was very light, and since it was raining, I didn't think too much of it.  My
temperature gauge was normal.  All of a sudden it shot up to the red, and I
pulled over to see steam coming from everywhere under the hood, mostly from
the intercooler.  Coolant levels checked, oil levels check.. I started it a
couple days ago to bring it to the gas station, and to see the status, and
sure enough the temp went up after about 5 minutes, so I just parked it.
Any idea what could be causing the sudden overheat?  It had been running
perfect previous to the incident.

Something obviously failed on you. And the first thing to check is gonna
be your thermostat.  It coulda stuck in the closed position, not
allowing sufficient coolant flow through the radiator.

Next item to check is of course the water pump.  This is of course
harder to check.

I would rule out a clogged radiator or such, as I can't see a car
overheating "Very quickly" or the temperature "shot up".  I would think
a clogged something would more relate to a slow rise in temperature.

Check to see where the water is really coming from - there is no water hose
on the intercooler.

If the water is on the passenger side of the car, you probably have a faulty
lower radiator hose.  A leak there is only apparent when the car warms up
and the thermostat opens so water flows through there under pressure.  A
common thing is a small leak where the lower hose connects to the thermostat
housing - and you can't see this without removing the y-pipe.

Chuck

P.S. Did you change the water pump at 60K miles with the timing belt?  If
the water is on the drivers side of the car, you might suspect the water
pump.

Subject: Team3S: Transmission problems....solution?

I guess it was just a matter of time before I started having the synchro
problems that most everyone complains of on our transmissions.   I can't
hardly get the car back into first gear after up shifting while the
transmission is still cold and the amount of time that I must spend between
gear changes or grind the syncro is increasing.

I know that there have been a few very serious attempts to get new syncros
made or purchase them from Getrag, is there anything currently in the works?
I do not know enough about transmissions or more specifically our
transmission to be able to spearhead any kind of task such as getting new
parts designed and manufactured, but I was wondering if the need/desire for
new parts is still there and if anyone who has the knowledge is or would
consider contributing their time and effort.

I have been looking to see if there are any transmission swaps available but
the only cars I can think of that would have a transverse transaxle are the
Lancer EVO and the Audi TT both of which are lighter and less powerful.
While searching for alternatives I found a link to a company in Chicago that
will manufacture custom gear and syncro sets.

http://www.emco-gears.com/index.htm

I am sure this is not a cheap process, but with no new syncros being
produced I know that we as a community will not be able to continue driving
these wonderful cars for many years if this problem is not remedied.

Sincerely,
Michael D. Crose

1st gen fog light if I recall is a single sealed unit and costs around $100
or so from the dealer.  You might get one from a junkyard.  It is not very
difficult to remove with a socket set and extension or box end wrench.  I
lost one a couple of years ago to a piece of debris on the track, so now I
tape them before an event.

In addition to what Jeff indicated.  This condition 9 times out of 10, is
cased by a wire in one of the front strut covers (the rubber covers above
each of the struts in the engine bay) pulling loose.  I would have expected
that problem to show up on the diagnostic but its hard to say if the person

Subject: RE: Team3S: Top Speed

Top speed has lots to do with more than mods.  Wide tires cause more
drag on the road surface.  Wide front ends and tall radiator grills zap
efficiency.  Remember the Porsche is a flat 4 or a flat 6 and the
Skyline is an inline 6.  I don't think we will ever be a force to run
against cars like that for something like this.  Our 4,000 pounds are
much too hard to get going easily.

I believe stock top speed is in 5th gear (for 6th gear folks) and have
heard of moderate top speeds reaching 193 mph (305 kmh) but I don't know
what it entailed and most likely took more than 2 miles to reach that
speed.  Good luck regardless.  Just be safe.

Skinnier tires will help.  Closing all the windows will help.  Shifting
at max torque levels will help.  Will pictures, video, write-ups be
available afterwards?

Try crawling into the driver footwell and see if you can manually adjust

Well without taking into account weight, HP, or drag (so based simply off
gear ratios and stock tire sizes), I think I once figured out that a first
gen toped out (redline in 5th) at 196 and a second gen toped out (redline in
6th) at 225.  So if you had all the HP in the world and took some drastic
steps with weight reduction, I suppose that those numbers are possible.

(RPM / 5th Gear Ratio) / Final Drive Ratio = RMP of the wheels (RPM-o-W)
RPM-o-W * Tire circumferance = Feet per minute (FPM)
 (FPM / 5280 = Miles per minute) * 60 = Miles per hour

assume a tire circumferance of 6.47ft

5-speed transmission; Rear End Ratio = 3.97:1

1st Gear     3.07
2nd Gear     1.74
3rd Gear     1.10
4th Gear     0.82
5th Gear     0.66

Redline = 7000RPM

6-speed transmission; Rear End Ratio = 3.87:1

1st Gear     3.27
2nd Gear     1.90
3rd Gear     1.24
4th Gear     0.92
5th Gear     0.73
6th Gear     0.59

Redline = 7000RPM
