My guess is that as long as all four wheels are off the ground then
spinning the wheels will not do too much damage since the wheels should
be able to turn.  The bad part is when one side is in the air and you
spin a wheel around a bunch or a front end is off the ground.

Mine are fine so I don't know what the symptoms are.  However, I do have
what I am guessing is a normal sound when I start up the car after it
has been sitting a while ... I think.  For example, in the morning
(temperature does not matter) I start the car and it can idle for 30
minutes or 0 minutes.  As soon as I pull away it is about 10-30 feet
later that a sound is heard.  It appears to be what I've guessed is the
rear differential or viscous coupling engaging after the fluid passes
through it.  Almost like a sound a small motor would make when whirring
up to speed.  Any idea what this is related to or if it might be damage
from a bonehead spinning the wheels when on jacks or is it normal wear?

Anyone had a viscous coupler go??? What were the sign and symptoms? How
about a unit messed up by a bone head spinning the wheels on the jacks?
Any info would help me diagnose a problem I am having.

I have never had a VC unit go out on me (well, I've only owned one).

But what do you mean about spinning the wheels on the jacks? It is
highly unlikely that if the car is on jacks and one wheel is turned
by hand that the VC unit will be damaged. If both front wheels are
off the ground and one is turned by hand, the other should rotate in
the opposite direction - our open front differential - the VCU/CD
shouldn't even turn. With only the back wheels off the ground, I
doubt a person could spin them very fast by hand. Certainly not
enough to harm the drivetrain - rear diff or VCU/CD. If all wheels
are off the ground and the engine is turning them (or turned by
hand), no harm should happen either (assuming the car stays on he
stands or lift).

Generally, the VCU/CD is damaged when front and rear driveshafts are
turning and vastly different speeds. I don't know what that speed
would be or how long it would have to happen, but would guess that
maybe 10-20 mph plus would do it over a short distance and less speed
difference (tire size mismtach) over a long distance. Towing the AWD
with one set of wheels on the ground should do it.

Thanks, Matt.  This morning I was backing out of a spot and not until I
pulled forward did I hear the sound.  Maybe it took that long to engage.

And the dreaded ABS is what has prevented my car from starting twice
with a near-dead battery.  If the ABS self-diagnostic test did not try
to run when you turn the key then the car would have started.  Maybe I
should follow Jim B's advice and pull the ABS fuse/plug and be done with
it.  *grin*

Hi Oleg,

Where did you order new complete synchro assemblies from? Are other
parts available - gears, shafts, bearings? Thanks.

I list 9 shops that rebuild our Getrag on the Garage Page at my web
site - here in the USA of course. Kormex would be my first choice for
information.

Hi Jeff,

I order it with my local Mitsu dealership.
All Getrag parts available to order. You can find parts numbers in Euro CAPS
programm, that I sent you.

Hey List/Jeff/Oleg, will the Euro caps recognize US VIN's?  Without a VIN
CAPS seems to be extremely user unfriendly....

I haven't had much problem with using CAPS without VIN numbers.  Given that
my car has parts from no fewer than 4 different models of 3S, I really had
no choice ;)  I can write a sort of mini-user guide if you folks think it
would help.

What are the odds that we can get the JDM and EURO CAPS online somewhere?
I'm really itching to  dig into those.

Hi all,

Just finished searching the archives regarding the in dash speakers but just
wanted to make sure I have this right.  I have a 97 VR-4 and blew the right
front speaker (tweeter?) Is it correct that the screen will just pop off?
There aren't any screws visible which leads me to believe that the dash
needs to come apart. Thanks in advance,

The entire speaker assembly pops out with some encouragement from a
small-bladed screwdriver.  Once loosened you can remove it by hand,
unplug the two connections, and pull out the speaker.

The speaker assembly consists of a speaker, felt covering the speaker,
plastic holding piece, and metal grill (see Eric Bowden's page below for
details).

I also blew out my right front speaker and searched for a replacement.
The stock size on mine is about a 3" flush-mounted speaker.  All the
replacements I found were 3-1/2" and larger in size so no good.  I ended
up getting a $20 tweeter from Radio Shack and wired that in to add some
filler for that corner of the car.  I also lost the rear speakers from
the rollbar installation so losing the front right was 25% of my
remaining speakers.

By brother-in-law works for Pioneer and says nobody carries a 3" speaker
in stock (not without special ordering anyway) and the easiest step
would be to call Mitsu.  When I said that Mitsu would charge $100 what
costs $30 in a radio store he also mentioned that it is worth that to
get a speaker back in place since a tweeter or some other 1" sized thing
will never replace the sound.

Eric and some others have good replacements (his webpage is
www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/9907/stereo/dashtwt.html).

I may have sent the wrong webpage.  He has two I believe.  One was
www.suthnr.com and is older so that is why I sent this one.  He is still
working on the car although not at the same pace as the pictures in the
webpage are.

Still ... his site is useful for us looking to replace the dash
speakers, install speakers, crossover, amplifier, subwoofer, stereo,
etc. and is a great launching point for the Gathering pages that was
getting started on 3Si.

And I know some reasons why he is not working much more on the car (but
it is not Team3S content) but he has won most of the stereo awards at
the Gatherings so he has retired his name from the ring on several
occasions.

Like Kurt Zobel though he drives his N/A like a stolen TT at the track.
Maybe he has some insight to improve the rest of us.
