RE: Team3S: Upgrade Rods with Pistons?

I'm reusing my stock rods in my
rebuild. Have them magnafluxed to look for
stress cracks. If
there are none, then they should be able to be reused
(assuming they are
still straight and pass all the standard checks).
Reports I've heard seem to
indicate the stock rods are pretty durable.
If you want, you could go
over the rods and polish down any forging lines
and smooth the surfaces to
prevent stress risers. They could also be
shot-peened as well.
After all that, have the rotating assembly (crank,
pistons, pins, rods,
flywheel, harmonic damper) balanced as a unit and you
should be set to
reassemble.
Stock rods should hold up to 20 psi (probably more) at the
track if there's
no detonation... I've run mine at 19 psi "a lot" with
no detrimental
effects on the rods.

I can confirm what Jeff Lucias said
about this. I ran my 357 turbos with
550cc injectors at 1.3 bar last weekend.
According to the datalogger, my
injector duty cycle was 75%.

If you are
replacing the oxygen sensor you can just cut off the wiring off the old sensor
and use a stardard deep socket to take it off. Then you can use an open
end wrench to install the new sensor. You will have to torque by feel but
it worked for me.
Or you can take a deep socket and cut a notch into it to
clear the oxygen sensor wire.
P.S. You can also order special tools from

Yes, yes, yes, I should better say they look too small or
something like
that. I was off my shoes when I wrote it. Jeff, thanks for the
correction !

Anyone who is local to the SF Bay Area..there
is another fun weekend of

Even if you

I'll be out in the MR-S (it uses hardly any consumables compared

Come hang out with us. *g*

The numbers had to be for "Streets...". We don't
have the article, and the
online R&T library only goes back to '93.
There are a couple of personal
pages of articles written about our cars, and
a couple more on 3Si, but I've
never seen this one from '92 published.
I do remember seeing it 'live',
though - it was what put the Stealth at the
top of my list way back when...
Until then I was planning to buy an RX7, but
I kept looking since I wanted a
touring car, not a sports car. Ferrari
was not in the running... ;-)
