Subject: Team3S: Cooking recipes

In fact I will take this time to submit the non-technical request that
anyone has about cooking on/in their car.  Usually this involves warming
something on the plenum or above the turbo manifolds.

I actually cooked chocolate chip cookies on my plenum so when I showed up in
Kansas for our road course we had hot, fresh cookies at the hotel.

So send them to me and I will compile and make a recipe book for our cars.

Technically (to conform to the rules and to discourage new people from
posting non-technical posts) this will help us see what engines are running
hotter or if those with hood scoops have cooler temperatures under the hood.
Very non-scientific I agree but worth a shot.

An example recipe should include:
   * Food you are cooking and any ingredients or brand name
   * Time you leave it under the hood
   * How far you drive with it there
   * How fast you drive
   * Where you leave it (on the plenum, on the front manifold, etc.)
   * How you attach it (lay it there, bungee cord, rope, etc.)

During a cold Autocross morning I warmed Pop Tarts so after the run they
were piping hot.  That is just to get some of you thinking and cooking in
the near future and I'll post them on my webpage.  Stay tuned and get
cooking.

I still think it's the CV joint. It is sooooo common of a problem...

Subject: Team3S: Hawk Blue Pads

Does anybody know/have experience with Hawk Blue brake pads?  Are these
street, street/race, or pure race pads?

A friend of mine just bought a '95 VR-4.  Along with a whole bunch of other
performance parts, there was a box containing 7 front axle sets of these pads
in the trunk.  The box has "Hawk - Blue - 3000GT '96+" hand written on the
side, but no other information.  The pads themselfs have a few non-descript
numbers on them, but no manufacturer info.  They match the stock pads
perfectly, but the pad material is clearly different.

Are these worth anything?  Something in the back of my mind tells me these
are 'race only' pads.

BTW - We're also trying to see if anyone knows anything about this car.  It's
a '95 VR-4,  it was bought at a Federal auction in Sacramento two weeks ago,
but it is not a California car.  It's got a dark blue metalic paint job with
two large white racing stripes down the center of the car.  (very similar to
the Viper GTS paint schema)  The paint job is top quality, probably cost the
owner $5K - $8K.  The car has a '97 rear spoiler.  It's in fairly good
condidtion except for a tear/scratch in the right front quarter panel.  It is
stock except for a custom cat-back exhaust, and it has been lowered about
2.5" by clipping the stock springs .  It looks like the owner was planning
some fairly major upgrades.  It came with the following parts stuffed in the
trunk and passengers seat: Stillen DP (new), what I think are two new/rebuilt
DSM 16G turbos, 1G DSM BOV, parts of an HKS EVC,  a Profec B, new in the box,
a custom FMIC of unknown origins,  6 cross-drilled rotors Brembo?/Stillen? (4
fronts, 2 rears), the pads I mentioned, two new clutch plates of unknow
origins, HKS SMF filter (new), two K&N FIPK's (used), a Mallory plug wire kit
with yellow and red plug wire, and other odds and ends.  The only thing we
know about the owner is that the last name is probably 'Lim'.  If anyone
knows who the previous owner was, please drop me a line, we'd like to get a
history of the car.

Thanks
Cyrus

Subject: RE: Team3S: Hawk Blue Pads

Cyrus,

Not sure what the price was but the passenger seat/trunk seems to be
close to a few grand alone.  Any need to get rid of any of those parts by
chance?  As for the Hawk Blue, ask Rich as he has run those before on the
track.  I believe the main line is "they eat rotors at street use" so use
them on an old set and test for yourself.
After that ask Jeff Mohler (who is away for the weekend) and Andie from
Carbotech since they probably know a good deal about brake pads.  Andie can
offer heat ranges and maybe coefficient of friction numbers too.  He is on
the list so he will see this.
It sounds like the car was a semi-race car.  Some of those are perfect
road course mods and some are more reflective of a street show car (rotors,
spoiler, etc.)  As an owner of the same car I feel shafted that someone
would get such a lovely car and remove the rear Active Aero wing and put a
non-movable wing.  I'll be all the rear Active Aero motors and wiring are
still there also (meaning it is not a full-removed mod).  Who knows -- maybe
it was broken anyway.
Glad another car is in our midst but saddened that it is missing some of
its unique features.

Subject: Team3S: Heated Throttle Body

As I was reinstalling my throttle body tonight, I remembered that we
have water lines running through out throttle bodies, Evidently to warm
incoming air possibly, or to thaw out the throttle body in cold weather.
Well, I live in one of the warmer areas of the country, and I have heard
of ways to plug this, and was curious about what all I had to do.

There are two water lines running from the area of the thermostat.  I am
assuming one is feed, and one is return line.  Can I purchase an adapter
and just plug these two lines together, making the system think it is
running coolant through the throttle body, but it really isn't?  Also -
do I need to plug the lines on the throttle body?  I am assuming since
the cooling system is a closed system, that all I really need to worry
about is attaching the feed and return lines together.

- -Any suggestions?

My 92 VR4 has the same "L" and "R" markings on them, and of course the tire
shop tried putting them on the wrong sides (Until I saw it and asked for
them to switch them around). After looking closer at them it does look like
they are shaped different for left and right side so as to pull air to the
brakes. Its just a slight fan blade look, but at 55+ MPH the wheels are
rotating pretty fast :)........

I simply conected the inlet to the outlet with a single hose on the coolant
manifold.  I've seen others do this also.  Because the throttle body
presents little restriction to the water flow, there is no need to try and
meter (with an orifice etc) the amount of water that goes through the tube,
hence simply connect the inlet to the outlet.

As far I know the engine coolant lines that go into the TB are to
warm a piece of wax for the FIAV (fast idle air valve). The coolant
does not heat the air in the TB; it does not circulate throughout the
TB. There is no performance gain that I can think of from removing
these lines from the TB. Look at the diagram below from the STIM.

I had similar symptoms (in my case one click per revolution when the wheel
was loaded) last summer (80k miles) and bought a new wheel bearing ($70) and
a CV joint ($$$!) before digging in.  The wheel bearing was obviously
destroyed, so I ended up installing the new bearing and leaving the CV joint
in the box.  Problem solved!  Good luck.

Hey guys, I just got off the phone with Stillen.  I've straightened
everything out and reviewed all the policies with my rep over at the offices.
I will be selling the dowpipes and I will be offering low flat-rate shipping
for anyone in the "Lower 48 States".  You need to contact me to get the
pricing and details as well as shipping outside the US since I am no longer
going to advertise prices due to other competitors' requests.  This pipe
won't be as cheap as advertised before, but I am offering discounts to 3/S
