Subject: Team3S: Found a dead 91

Whilst driving down the street today, I chanced upon a Firestorm Red 91
Stealth parked at a local Tuffy Auto Service Center (on First Ave in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa). It looked exactly like the one my daughter just bought, so I
nipped in to see if she was having a problem.

It wasn't her -- it was some poor 20-year-old who had just bought the car,
drove it home from Des Moines (100 miles) trailing a cloud of smoke, and
took it to Tuffy's to see what was wrong. Tuffy found that it has zero
compression on number one.

Ever the helpful sort, I thought I'd try to help this poor unfortunate new
Stealth owner. I said I would consult with the wizards on the net (that's
youse guys) to see what the conventional wisdom was on what to do at this
point. It appears to be a bone stock 91 with 80,000 miles. Some recent
internal work has been done, because I see lots of shiny new fasteners on
the intake and valve covers.

So...
What's the cost of a new short block these days?
What's the cost of a used engine, and where can you get one?
Is there some place the kid can ship the engine for a rebuild?
What's his best course of action at this point?
Anybody want to buy a dead '91? I'd be happy to check it out in more detail
for anyone who's interested in buying it.

All advice is welcome.

First question: What model was it?  ES/RT/RT Turbo?

>What's the cost of a new short block these days?
New is $3500 at Mitsubishi.  Some dealers offer 25% 3SI discounts, but that
probably won't do him any good.

>What's the cost of a used engine, and where can you get one?
www.sunsengines.com
www.risingsunengines.com Japanese salvage motors. Probably others, but these
are the two I know off the top of my head, and that I've seen positive
feedback on. Several guys from the 3SI board have had good luck with them.
They are compression tested and have 30-50,000 miles on them.  Prices are
between $2200 and $2700 depending on year and model.

>Is there some place the kid can ship the engine for a rebuild?
The big names come to mind first.  GT Pro, Altered Atmosphere, Dynamic
Racing.  Probably lots of "lesser known" shops too.  But it'll cost him.

>What's his best course of action at this point?
It really depends on his financial situation and dedication to the car.  He
may be able to escape with a re-ring job, or he could have a holed piston or
damaged head.  We really don't have enough information on this.

>Anybody want to buy a dead '91? I'd be happy to check it out in more detail
for anyone who's interested in buying it.

If it's AWD, I MIGHT be interested.  I already have a FWD project car
though.  I'm sure I'm not along in asking you to pass along our wishes of
good luck to him.  He's in for a hell of a ride if that engine has major
problems. :(

Unless the buyer knew what they were getting when they bought it, most
states have "Lemon Laws".  I believe the seller could be held responsible...
Just an FYI, it's something to look into.

The Porsche brake caliper paint can be purchased from Tweeks
(www.tweeks.com) and is only about $60 but it is world class and then you
can say you own something from a Porsche.

If you go to Pep Boys or other stores then look for a two-part paint (a
hardening agent and the paint).  Anything else will not work.  It should be
plenty heat-resistant.  I don't know what under hood temps are but my turbos
create a ton of heat.

I recommend the person painting it themselves.  Some people like the raised
letters painted.  Some like the recessed areas painted.  Some like shading.
So let the new owner paint it.  Follow this link to see mine.

No it is not.....so if anyone wants the porche paint then maybe you could
let the masses know where to get some. I have body touch up paint on mine
and it has not had a problem for 6 days of daily driving. Good idea though,
If I need to replace my paint that's what I'll use., but I see no problems
yet. I would rather not paint any of them to be honest. Polishing is a pain
in the butt but painting always never good enough for a perfectionist so I
would rather skip that step.

You want a wire loom for the injector wires on the front three
injectors....I am working on that one too.

Today I drove my car for about 50 miles. I was coming home from another town
and had to pass a car...So I pulled into the left lane and hit the gas to
pass (not FOT) the car made some noise and cut in and out I could feel it
jerk and stop about 5 times and It stopped. I  stayed at 70mph and cruised
towards home. This same thing happened the day I bought my car after about
45 min of highway driving it begins shifting bad (I think it is a shifting
problem and not the engine)

hrmm what do yah think?

It is an auto tranny and it has fluid. I couldnt really see the color but I
think the dealer changed all the fluids before he sold me the car.

Hmmr all the info :91 ES auto 99,000 miles

The rpm's were about 4k once it was at 5 when it started cutting in and out
It seems like right before the shifting point it gets bad and then goes
close to normal.

The car runs fine the oil pressure is about 1/4 of the way up from L (Is
that normal)

I dunno what should I check out to see if it  my tranny or soemthing else?

I have been noticing a strange vibration/sound when driving between 30 and
40 miles per hour... it sounds like a cyclical feeling/sound of some sort
where it will come on and build for moment and then taper off.  I am
thinking that it has something to do with the 4-wheel steering like when it
is starting to engage but not quite... has anyone else experienced it.

It's not very likely, but it could be just a stuck intake or exhaust valve.

Hello all again,

This is my last question; I promise...  The RPS stage 3 clutch that I bought,
as I was examining the clutch disc(pucks), I observed a crack on one of the
pucks and a little bit of grinded metal on one of the other pucks.  All I want
to know is if these small but minor defects are really defects, and if I should

to prematurely fail when the labor charges to install it are in the

Looks like you have everything you need. You will not be using your front
precat, or you main cat.
I hope your's fits better than mine. I have an engine on a stand and tried
to put the downpipe on and it won't line up with both flanges.

The reason there are 4 holes on the middle flange is to make it compatible
with both 1st and 2nd gen cars. (the rear precat flange is rotated at
different angles....91-93 is different than 94 and up) Iv'e put both
versions of the rear precat on my engine, and neither one line up with the
stillen DP.

I'm planning on putting another flex section in the DP where it runs under
the oil pan. This will solve MY fitment problem.

The 2 plugs in your picture are to plug the 2 holes if your car only has 2
oxegen sensors

You might search through the Team3S archives for clutch woes, I
was having these kinds of problems as well.

I was having trouble with the clutch disengaging, it was hard to shift
into gears at times (couldn't get the shifter linkage to move at ALL
sometimes), and the sweet spot in my pedal moved around too.
My pedal would actually get very soft and the clutch disengagment
point got close and closer to the floor. It would get so bad that the
clutch wouldn't disengage completely with the pedal on the floor
and when I pushed it in, it felt like it needed to go another inch or
two farther.

I bled the clutch two or three times and this did not help the
problem. I replaced the slave cylinder and this didn't fix it. I
checked the clutch line and there were no leaks. I replaced the
master cylinder (major PITA) and then *adjusted the clutch pedal
throw* which made all the difference in the world. I turned the bolt
so that the clutch engagement point started farther away from the
floor. My clutch system works beautifully now .. butter-smooth
shifting.

might be time to replace the master ..

Subject: Team3S: Exhaust Question for a 92 VR4...

This week i'm going to AAM and getting a Boost Controller, Turbo Timer,
Blow OFF Valve, INtake, PLugs, Wires and some guages... Is it smart to
keep the stock exhuast to have good back pressure for the (Stock) turbos
or should i upgrade that as well..

Backpressure is the enemy of turbos, but with your minimal modification list
you can probably get by on the stock exhaust.  The downpipe is probably more
restrictive than the cat-back portion though so if you upgrade consider
starting there.

Subject: Team3S: TD05 manifold options

Does anyone know if there are any TD05 (DSM turbo) compatible manifolds for
our cars that DON'T cost $2000?  I'd even be happy with modifying the flange
on my stock manifolds to accept the 4-bolt TD05s.  Any input is welcome.

Subject: Team3S: 4-bolt  conversion timing pictures

I installed my heads and am getting ready to install the timing belt on my 4-bolt main conversion.  There has been a lot of discussion about how the timing mark is one tooth off so I took some pictures and posted on 3si.

http://www.3si.org/vbb/showthread.php?s=4629fb03c9c2aa8fe81639233078449a&threadid=37367

Cylinder 1 was at TDC when this picture was taken.

Anyone know what part is different to cause this change?
- - If it is the crank I would expect the same problem if you installed a 4-bolt main crank in a 2-bolt main engine , Can anyone confirm yes or no?

- - If it is the front oil seal case that causes the timing mark change I would expect the timing drive pully to also be different?

I don't really need this information to continue my re-build I am just curious.
