All,

My 92 RT/TT has been running 275/45R/17's since I first got it... As far as
I am aware the rims are stock with no visible alterations to offset... I
have not noticed any significant problems with them... my 2 cents.

* I don't think it is advisable to put 275-width tires on an 8.5" width rim.
* I think the rim is supposed to be 9.5" or 10" but TireRack has this on
their
* site.  You need something that will support the thin sidewall.

* 275-size tires do not fit the front with stock offset.  They do fit the
rear
* but not the front (at least on mine).

There's a group buy for leather seat covers going on over at the 3SI board for
those who might be interested. Time is short ---- I think the deadline is the 10th.

Subject: Team3S: Help! OD tranny failure!

I have a 91 Stealth ES with an automatic transmission.

For  last month it would slip a little when I engaged  the OverDrive.
Now when I put the OD it slips all the time. This is my daily
driver and I  do half of my driving on highways.

Please I need help with these questions before I go to the mechanic.

Is the OD failure common?
Any other Mitsubishi vehicle has the same auto tranny?
Any web pages that will teach me about the tranny or the OD failure?
Is any shop better (aamco, lee miles, etc) than the others for our cars?

Thanks to all for your time.

Reasonably common.  It usually occurs from driving at below highway speeds
with the overdrive enabled.  In the owners manual somewhere it recommends
against using overdrive below a certain speed (can't remember specifically -
its been a long time since I had an auto tranny Mitsubishi).

The failure is likely with the "overdrive clutch pack".  At least that's
what they called it when mine failed in my '90 Eclipse AT.  You might be
able to get more information on the failure from the Talon Digest Archives
at http://www.dsm.org.

> Any other Mitsubishi vehicle has the same auto tranny?

The Eclipse AT tranny is similar in design.

The quality of shops varies widely in different areas, so its difficult to
recommend a shop based on company name.  Its better to ask people locally
who they'd take their car to.  Where do you live?  Maybe someone else on
this List can recommend a local shop if they are near your area.

wheel width. Looks like they typically come in 1/2" increments. Do you just
divide the metric tire width by 25.4, then pick the next closest 1/2"
measurement, without going over? Or is that over simplified?
> Ryan Peterson

Wheel widths are in 1/2" increments, yes.  But the tire width that will
correctly fit that wheel width may be up to +/-20% from that figure.  A
slightly wider tire will protect your rims from curbside parking errors,
BTW.  So going *over* the wheel width is desirable when choosing your tire
width, while going under the wheel width is not.  A more-than-20% wider tire
may not seat properly on the wheel, so that is not recommended either.  Many
of the better UHPerformance tires include a rib of some sort that extends
outward to protect the wheel rim, so your ideal tire width will be about the
same as the wheel width, or slightly more.

Many standard wheel & tire dimensions are listed in Cody's Plus-Sizing page
on our website.  All the formulas for making calculations are there too.

Best,

Forrest

Subject: Team3S: Intercooler time

Apologies if I already asked this question. If I did, I can't find the
posts in my archives.

It's time to install the Alamo intercoolers I bought used last year. A few
questions:

1. Anything I should do BEFORE starting the project? Such as getting the
intercoolers tested, painted, etc? Where do you get such tests done?
2. Any intercooler install instructions available on anybody's web site or
in text? Please send a link or the text.
3. Can I use one or both of the VR4 intercoolers on my Eagle Talon TSi?
4. What do you do with a set of perfectly functional used intercoolers off
a VR4? Are they worth anything? Keep them as spares? Sell them to a
non-turbo guy who wants to upgrade?

You can plug one end with something and figure out a way to hook up an air
compressor to the other end and test them up to whatever boost level you
plan to run in order to find small leaks.  On new intercoolers there
obviously shouldn't be any...

Don't paint them - heat transfer is best if you just leave them alone.

When you are done installing them, you can make a pressure tester to test
the entire intake side for leaks.  Vineet Singh made a tester, and I made a
similar one.  Vineet's design is here:

http://www.ecanfix.com/~amit/

I recommend making a version that'll plug straight into the rubber hose
where the MAF plugs in.  Doing it the other way (a Tee that plugs into the
two inlet pipes) is "problematic", but the large pipe version will probably
be more difficult to get to fit right.

> 2. Any intercooler install instructions available on
> anybody's web site or in text? Please send a link or
> the text.

The instructions in the service manual are pretty detailed.  I think for
Alamo intercoolers you need to move the oil cooler from the driver's side
intercooler path to in front of the radiator somewhere.  There should be
some sort of instructions from Alamo - otherwise try out their tech support
email.

> 3. Can I use one or both of the VR4 intercoolers on my Eagle Talon TSi?

Nope.  Well, I should qualify that answer....  You could use them on
anything, but the VR4 intercoolers are smaller than at least the 1st gen DSM
intercooler, and you'd have to futz around with the intercooler inlet/outlet
to get it to mate up to the DSM hoses.  More trouble than its worth, really.

Could try selling them to a Honda guy putting turbos on his car.  They'd
work for a non-turbo 3/S upgrading to turbos, but you don't see too many
people doing that.  If you can find someone - cool!  They'll probably also
fit in a 3G Eclipse for someone doing a supercharger or turbo install on
one.  I've actually contemplated getting a 3G Eclipse at some point and
putting all my old VR4 parts on it and seeing what it would do.  Could be
interesting...

Can anyone tell me what racing seats people usually go with?  I'm a Corbeau
Dealer and I was just thinking about setting up a group sale but thought I
should see if anyone prefered a different brand of seats.  I've seen a few
different kinds in 3/S but I wanted to put the Corbeau GTS II in my car
because I love the look and I won't lose the reclining option like many other
seats.

Subject: Team3S: Drive shaft questions

I just had the dealer look at the DS again. They say that the Carrier bearings are shot and they
say that the only fix is to replace the whole shaft. Are they "yanking my chain" or are the parts
available from somewhere else?

(BTW: forgive my ignorance but What is a "carrier bearing"? Is it one of the intermediate
attachment points that hold up the drive shaft at one of the 3 "seperation" points. i.e. It's a 3
piece shaft, hence 5 connections counting the end points, is one/all of them called the carrier
bearing?)

Has anyone heard anything bad/good about the 2 piece shaft available from Brian at GTPro?

Hi everyone,

When one has higher flowing turbos like 357s, 15gs, etc., can one
expect the factory BOV to start leaking sooner since there's more airflow?

I suspect mine is leaking at 12-12.5 psi now with my new turbos, since
before I'd be able to hit 14.5 with the factory turbos.
Anyone else experience this?

Thanks in advance,
Noble

I'd pressure-test them to make sure there aren't any small holes poked in
the front row of tubes - for peace of mind if not for any other reason.

Talon would be a 1G or 2G Eclipse/DSM.  I was saying that you could probably
use a 3/S intercooler on a 3rd Generation Eclipse.  They don't come with
turbos, but the front bumper setup appears to be similar to the 3/S design
so if a person were building a twin turbo system for a 3rd Gen Eclipse it
might be possible to use 3/S intercoolers.

You could shoe-horn in 3/S intercoolers in a 1G or 2G DSM
(Eclipse/Talon/Laser), but you'd have to do piping fabrication to get it all
connected - and to get any benefit over the stock DSM intercooler you'd need
to use both of the 3/S intercoolers in parallel some way.  There's a guy
that makes a kit to use two DSM intercoolers in parallel, but I haven't seen
it done with 3/S intercoolers - there again you'd be fabricating piping or
modifying the piping inlet/outlets on the 3/S intercoolers.
