Subject: Team3S: DSM Shootout- Arty 91 VR-4

I expect to be able to run at the Norwalk Ohio DSM Shootout on 7/20/01.
Due to severe cash crunch had to cut a few corners but 9's are still expected.
I won't try for 8's without tune time.
1000+ HP AWD 91 VR-4 Maiden run...Finally!

Subject: Team3S: FTD at Marshalltown

At the risk of offending one of the 3S list admins, who tells me my posts
about my "overrated brakes" are annoying to all the drag racers and stereo
people (and pretty much told me to shut up because I am boring you folks),
I am going to tell you about my exploits at Marshalltown this weekend
anyway. Then I'll shut up again.

Marshalltown is a 0.6 mile road course with 12 turns. We rent it for the
day. For more on the track, including a track photo and layout, go to
http://www.bestofiowa.com/ia-intl-raceway/index.html.

Got FTD with a 40.2 sec lap against one of my local rivals, a new Z06
Corvette (running headers, open exhaust, Bilsteins, and BFG racing tires),
beating him by a full TWO SECONDS.  It was obvious that the race tires
weren't working for him, because I was catching him under acceleration out
of the hairpin. He was shifting down to 1st gear whilst I was in 2nd, and I
still managed to close up on him. If he ran under traction control, the
electronics slowed him down, and if he turned the traction control off,
he'd smoke the rears. Either way, I had him good. For the benefit of an
in-car cameraman from the local TV station, I sat about 10 ft off his
bumper for an entire lap and had him beat everywhere on the track. Felt
good. We'll see what happens when he gets a decent set of tires.

The other fast car was a 2000 Porsche Carrera 4, the AWD/but not turbo car,
running BFG G-Forces. I nipped him by 0.3 seconds. The rest of the slow
cars there were a few BMW M3s, a pair of SCCA race-prepared Neons, a SVT
Cobra (my daughter), a Fiero (my son), and a 944 Turbo S -- about 12 cars
in all.

We ran all day for $30 per car, so I got in about 50 laps.

Interesting tidbits:

I let my son drive my car for the first time, and told him to keep it in
third gear for the entire track except for the hairpin (turns 2-3 after the
S/F line, and to be careful about applying power because the car tends to
leap when it comes up on the turbos. He proceeded to turn mid-42 second
laps, which is the same as I do when I cruise around in third gear. I know
that my kids will catch and pass me some day, but I didn't expect it to
happen quite so soon. And the little $#%$@ has only been driving a stick
shift car for one year. Grumble. Chuck Willis probably understands.

The lesson here is that all you young turks should think seriously about
open track driving. If an old fart point-and-shoot rally driver like me can
whup up on  ZO6 Vettes and AWD Porsches (not to mention M3s, 911s, etc.),
imagine what you young kids with all your fantastic reflexes could do. As I
have always said, it ain't me it's the car. I can't wait to see what guys
like Flash will do with a little track time.

Other notes:

The 1/2 in. spacers work!! Thanks Jeff!  It hasn't eliminated the
understeer, but it put a big dent in it. This was the first time I've been
on a track since we put them in, and I can feel the difference.

The brakes continue to work great. For the first time, I changed pads at
the track before coming home. With the Big Reds, you can change pads in
about 3 minutes a side (less if you don't care about scratching the
caliper), so I stuck the stock pads back in when putting the street tires
back on. I run Hawk Blues, which destroy the rotor if you run them on the
street, so it is imperative to go back to street pads after an event.

I also recommend getting a batter-powered impact wrench. It makes changing
wheels much faster (scree, scree, scree, scree, scree and the wheel is off!).

All for now. I'll shut up again. Please don't kick me off the list for
mentioning my "overrated brakes" again.

Rich/old poop/94 VR4
Brakes: Big Reds, Hawk Blues, BFG SS lines, air ducts, water injection
Suspension: Ground Control adj susp lowered to the max, Eibachs, camber plates
Kuhmo V700 race tires
Stock motor w/K&N, custom catback.

Subject: Team3S: BOV options

I need some alternatives on a BOV for my 1997 VR-4.  I do not like the
Greddy because it interferes with the shift linkage, and have been looking
high and low for a 1st gen BOV and adapter that I have heard about.  But
nobody seems to carry it.

A friend told me about a part from buschur racing, but it seems that I was
mistaken, and this part is for an eclipse, not the VR-4.

So, now I am at the same dilemma.  I have a Greddy that I would like to get
rid of if I could only find something else to put in it's place.

You can use the 1g DSM blow-off so long as you have the adapter for a 2G
DSM.  I know several guys who are running them and I'll be buying one myself
as soon as my local shop gets some more adapters.
