Subject: Team3S: VR-4 Grinding in 2nd and 3rd

I had been having problems with my 1997 VR-4 clunking when shifting into 2nd
and sometimes 3rd gear under acceleration.

When I take it real easy, the shifting is really good.  But when I
accelerate normally or even under a heavy acceleration, the trans clunks.

I took it to the dealer a few months ago, and he changed the gear lube and
said that it was normal wear.  I bought the car with about 48,000 on it and
now is has 49 and change.

I put redline in there and didn't see any noticeable difference.

I wrote a letter to Mitsubishi Motors of America, and a very nice lady
talked to the dealer and made another appointment for me to take it back
next week.

Any suggestions on what to tell the dealer, or somehow put pressure on him
to actually fix it ?

Any advice on further course of action, after he probably tells me again
that nothing is wrong ?

Unfortunately the only other dealer around here is 45 minutes or so from
here.  So there isn't even another local dealer that I could take it to.

Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks

I have the RPS Stage II in mine.  Its pretty nice, but with the extra grip
combined with my Bozzspeed lightweight flywheel, it is not as friendly as I
would like for around town.  Compared to my other car (bone stock), the other
is much more drive friendly.  But, with launches, I know my mod'd car will take
the cake.

Best of luck

I had that in my '91 TT (5-speed), shortly before my 2nd gear synchro quit on
me.  I thought it was clutch engagement, but the disk looked fine and all when I
removed it...  I was suspect because it almost acted like it was engaging in the
gear immediately after I shifted.  But, I also was having problems with a
leaking rear differential, as I found out later.  I wish I could give more data,
but the car was totalled shortly after (NOT at fault =).

Best of luck

Here's how to check it:

Take off in 1st, get up to a moderate speed (10-20 mph), push the clutch
all the way to the floor, then shift it into 2nd gear fast. Not a bang
shift mind you, just fast. Also try it fast from 3rd to 2nd at a moderate
speed. If you hear a crunch or a grind, your 2nd gear syncro is shot. Your
car has only 48,000 miles on it, so your 2nd gear synchro went out 12,000
miles early.

I hope you got a warranty when you bought the car.
The dealer is lying to you (of course), probably because you bought the car
there and they don't want to fix it under warranty.

The 2nd gear syncro in a Getrag 6 speed is just like the hard drive in your
computer: it is only a matter of time until it fails. The only real
difference is that you can predict fairly closely when the tranny will
fail. At about 60,000 miles is when they usually go. You never know when a
hard drive will go.

It is a $3,000 repair, so I would start yelling and screaming and
threatening lawsuits if it isn't covered by warranty. If the tranny has
been doing this ever since you bought the car, it means they KNEW it had a
bad tranny when they sold it to you. It's probably why the seller dumped it
in the first place. If you bought it at a Mitsu dealer, they had to know.
It's only the single biggest problem with our cars. Don't let them play
innocent.

Of course, if you bought it at a Chevy dealer, all bets are off.

Rich/old poop/ been there, done that (tranny at 60,000 miles)

I just bought a new 2nd gear synchro blocking ring from
http://www.kormextrans.com for $125 (I have a full set of synchros for my
6-speed from Jack's '98 Getrag deal, but I thought I'd save those and take
advantage of Kormex's stock).  My 2nd gear synchro got bad at right around
60k miles, but I've managed to drive another 23k miles by pausing between
shifts.  Good luck!

Subject: Team3S: Fuel management question.

I have 550cc injectors on the way. Only thing I can really afford now for
fuel management is something along the lines of an Apex'i SAFC.

I was just wondering if I got an ARC2 later on, would I be able to use my
SAFC with the ARC2 or would the ARC2 make my SAFC obsolete?

I know that an AFC would work with the VPC, but I'm leaning more towards the
ARC2.

Thanks in advance to all responses.
