Re: Clutches???
What choices do we have?
My Centerforce
didn't last at all, I can't even just replace the disc, so
forget
them.
The Clutch Masters stage 4 only has a 2400lb pressure plate and an
unsprung
hub isn't even an option. That comes at a retail price of
$720. I don't
know of anyone that's running one. I've heard that
the fulcrum is different
so they might be able to give more clamping force
with a weaker pressure
plate, but if it doesn't at least look better on paper
I don't want to shell
out $700 and hope that it works well.
I emailed
RPS over a week ago. I've heard some questionable things about
them and
I wanted some more detail. No response, I'm not waiting, they lost
a
potential customer.
ACT (the clutch of choice for DSMs) doesn't have a
serious contender for us
right now. It's too bad as the 2600 with a
street disc has gone mid tens or
better and is very easy to drive. Not
sure how fast the race disc has gone.
I don't have $2000 to spend on a
clutch/flywheel combo that's a bitch to
drive on the street, are there any
other SERIOUS options? Has anyone tried
anything else and had good
results?

Team3S: Sanity Check
Quick question:
I just ordered the Tein HA
Coilover kit for my 3000GT (base model). On the
invoice, it lists the
kit as "Tein HA Coilover Kit for 1990-99 3000GT, All
Models" Um...
maybe I'm missing something, but shouldn't the kit for the
base/SL models be
*different* than the kit TT for the TT models (at least
the springs
anyway)? The stock spring rates are substantially different,
and the
weight distribution is slightly different, too. Should I be
worried, or
just assume that Tein knows what they're doing?
Thanks!

Team3S: stock DSM parts as upgrades?
I have friends who are big into
DSM's so I can get a lot of stock parts from

many can be used to upgrade my VR4?
I know about using the injectors and
the bov. I was really wondering if there
is any way to use the stock
dsm turbo as an upgrade? Either the whole thing or
internals.

What's missing from the ACT offerings? The ACT street setup
is good to 458
ft. lbs, and can be gotten for under $500. Clamping
force on their pressure
plates is 19% higher than stock, which if I remember
right works out to
somewhere between 2500-2600 pounds of force.
The
race setup without sprung hub can handle 586 ft lbs.
I didn't have luck
with the Centerforce on my old car - premature wear. How
much power
does the clutch need to hold? For street use and occasional
dragstrip
use I think the ACT works fine at a good price, with a seperately
replacable
friction disc. RPS seems to have good stuff, if you get lucky
and don't
get a clutch with quality issues. I haven't heard of any issues
with
ACT clutches failing in VR4/TT applications, but I don't think there's
that
many people using them - at least not near as many people as the DSM
guys
have using them.

I list Mitsu dealers that offer a 20 to 25
percent "club" discount on
the Links and Garage pages at my web site. I have
purchased parts
many times for Tall Mitsu (for about half of what local
dealer want)
and recommend them. I also list used parts yards and you can try
some
of them also.

Team3S: Very rich exhaust at idle - VR4
All -
I've suspected for a
while that my VR-4 was running rich at idle, so when I
was getting an oil
change today I asked the guys if I could play with their
emissions test
equipment. They obliged (for free! :), and I found that my
car is
indeed running VERY rich at idle - to the tune of hydrocarbons in the
350-400
range. At cruising engine speeds (but not under load), the HC
levels
were much lower and in normal ranges.
What could cause rich
exhaust at idle? Bad O2 sensor? Bad plugs? My
precats have
been gutted, but the engine was nice and warm so I don't think
this should
make a difference. Any ideas?
Thanks,
- - Brian

Team3S: Re: Clutches???
I'd be interested in hearing more about
their clutch option. Have you made
any passes with it? How long
have you had it? I'm looking for something
just short of an on/off
switch, no more games. A 2400lb pressure plate
seems a little weak when
lighter DSMs are running 2600lb. I'm a little
aggressive also, I launch
at 6k+ and turn over 275 Firehawk SZ50 EPs.
I would not recommend the
Centerforce (Dual Friction is the only option on
TTs). Not only did it
not hold up, but you have to replace the ENTIRE
clutch assembly at a cost of
$500+ retail rather than $150 or so for a new
friction
disc.

It sounds like there is a
vacumn leak around the throttle body area and I
forget whether it was always
like that, like perhaps it's the idle control
thing-a-ma-jig. The car
is stumbling under acceleration right now so I'm
trying to figure out what's
wrong.

ADVICE
I have 92 vr4 with a brand new motor. I upgraded the turbos to
15gs that
came from knight turbos..I am using a saab 9000 BOV.Gutted pre cats
with
ATR down pipe and Borla exhaust. HPC coated pistons mild porting on
the
heads with updated lash adjustersKnew wires, plugs ect...I went to
full
synthetic oil at 2300 miles.I have put 700 miles on it since my
oil
change and used about 1 quart but i dont know if I have burned that
much
or not because I have an oil leak at the pan[fun].I am running
about
10-11 psi on 94 octane.I finally got my hands on a good lap top to
do
some TMO data logging.Somthing does not feel right with the car.My
EGT
for the front bank reads less than 600f degrees at idle while the
back
bank EGT gauge reads 800f degrees both are in the manifolds. When
under
load they read prety much the same.I pulled the plugs out of the
front
bank and noticed #1 plug had black scum around the rim and
a
glaze[grey/brown/yellow] on the insulator while the other 2 did not
they
look great. I looked into the plug hole at the top of the piston
and
noticed #1 piston had black looking color while the other two were
more
of a grey. When I first got the car back I drove it a few hundred
miles
befor realizing the timming was way off [retarded] I think that it
would
affect all plugs equally. My plans for the future on the fuel system
will
be upgraded fuel pump, 550 or 660 inj. and either a VPC or a
ARC-2.My
question is could the turbos be to much for my stock fuel set up
and
increased boost? If so how could it affect just the #1 piston/plug?Did
I
go to full synthetic to soon? Or worse yet did the shop who replaced
my
guides not do it properly and that is why I have a black goo on just
#1
piston due to the valve guide leaking oil into the chamber.Or could
it
be a weak coil? Any input would be greatly apreciated!! Meanwhile I
will
be trouble shooting the car with the TMO.Se ya at the DSM shootout
and
hopefully I will have a upgraded fuel system and good
plugs.
