Knock sensor question?
If you just want to simulate
knock in your engine, Ill give you the test
that, to the best of my
knowledge, is used by every tech for evey
manufacturer out there. Just
knock the engine. Put a the end of a breaker
bar or broomstick or
whatever up against the block and tap the other end of
it with a
hammer. You run no risk of doing any damage to your engine (youre
just
tapping, not hammering in a railroad spike here), and you should get a
clear
spike on your DVOM (volt meter if you prefer). If you have a nice
litte multimeter, such as a Fluke 98, you can even monitor ignition timing
and watch the ignition retard.
And i have to
agree with the others, keep low octane gas out of your
engine its just not a
good idea. The knock sensor is a safe-guard, and you
hope and pray
that you never really need it.

You guys are scaring me with all this
talk about knock, blown pistons and
such as that.
Let me confirm
something for my peace of mind:
If I install 560 mm injectors, Supra fuel
pump, Alamo intercoolers, Spearco
water injection, a Blitz boost controller
set to 15 psi and run 100+ octane
race gas, will I have ANY problem with
knock or preignition? Remember,
I'll be at full boost for 20-30 minutes
at a time on road courses. I am
making these mods to keep combustion chamber
temps down, not to get
horsepower (I'll take whatever I can get from the
boost controller and
bigger injectors, of course). Is there something else I
should do for
insurance?
(Curt: I'll get up to Mnpls when the
weather breaks, so we can put in the
boost controller and Spearco).

You should be ok as long as you can deliver the
right amount of fuel for the
air your charging into your cylinder,
especially with the high octane gas.
And should it be kneeded, the
knock sensor should keep you safe. I think
most of us were just
reccomending agaist testing it unnecessarily. Stick
with your high
octane and make sure youre timing is properly adjusted, and
youll be
fine.

Rich,
The ONLY way to be sure
you do not have detonation is to measure it.
Dumping fuel or low boost is no
guarantee that no knock will be
present. For 1991-1993 cars the TMO is the
solution. The MSD knock
sensor (see Roger Gerl's web site) may be a solution
for any year
car. I have several links to articles (not by me)
concerning
knock/detonation on the Tech Page at my web site for additional
info.
For those that enjoy College Engineering-level books, John
B.
Heywood's "Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals" is indispensible.
A
bit pricey ($93 at Barnes & Noble), it is THE bible concerning
engines.
It has an excellent section on detonation that is widely
cited and
copied.

Team3S: starter going bad?
hey all.. i posted to the list a few days ago
about the funny noise my car is
making when i start it.. well i kinda
narrowed it down to the starter, when
the engine is running and i turn the
ignition on again i get the noise
everytime.. are there bearings in
starters? thats what im thinking the sound
sounds like. hey gurus let
me know what you all think about starters going
bad.. when i cleaned my
intake manifold, i had to crank the starter about 35
times in a row to get
it started... i think we got a little hot n heavy in
the starter area..

No, otherwise there would not be such a debate going on. On the
1st gen cars
we can log the knock with the TMO Datalogger or the Pocket
LOGGER. On all
other cars, we do not have any chance than installing a
seperate device. The
MSD knock sensor is a microphone that can be installed
in a tread into the
block. A box then shows the amount of vibration with a
bar-graph. It would
show a constant bar if no knock and spikes and wavey
behavior if there is
knock. But it doesn't tell you the exact amount of
knock.
Remember, each engine with its mods is totally different. Just ask
Mikael
about his latest experience or two of my customers that are having
knock at
only 0.6 bars of boost. Then increasing boost would cause a bang if
the
problem is not resolved.
The sources provided on Jeff's pages are
a MUST read for all of us who like
to increase boost for more power. The
water injection is one solution to
fight against it and the bigger
intercooler and bigger turbos another. But
then we don't know how good the
filling of the combustion chamber is and
there are possible lean spots at the
piston edges ! Therefore, just
installing parts and then running a particular
boost for a longer period is
not safe.
The MSD knock sensor can be
installed in place of the rear water-bolt. But
it will be hard to read unless
we have comparison data to the datalogger. I
currently do not have any as my
car is still not running.

I have a 91 RT TT.

Does
anyone have any suggestions, preferences on struts, springs etc.

I have the GC adjustable suspension w/camber plates. You
don't need camber
plates if (a) you don't lower it to the max or (b) you
don't need lots of
negative camber. I lowered mine as far as possible with
the GC kit, but my
alignment guy could get it to factory specs -- just
barely, and with only
0.5 negative camber. Not everyone has been so
successful. I wanted to to
get more camber, so I ordered the
camber plates, and now I run with -2.5 deg.
I am not sure you can get
GAB struts. People report delivery times up to
13
weeks.

What is the max you can lower the car with GC springs? and what
would be the
optimum spring rate to get?
