Team3S: Engine rebuild or new short block?
OK, here's the deal on my
VR4. As a few of you may remember I
purchased a '94 VR4 in late
December only to have it blow *both* head
gaskets on the drive home from the
car lot (less than 2 hours in my
possesion). The dealer took the car
back in and had the head gaskets
repaired, put in a new thermostat, new
plugs, and repaired an oil
leak in one of the turbos. Total cost of
repair: $1,200 (all
covered by the limited warranty). I picked
the car up Tuesday of
this week. I drove it home and it was stalling at
red lights. I
knew it was just the ECU trying to relearn the car so I
didn't make a
big deal over it. Once I got in the drive way I let it
idle for
about 5 minutes and the car smoothed out. After a brief pause
we got
back in the car and drove it over to a friend's house so they
could
check it out. We all four piled in and went for a ride. We
didn't
really abuse the car (never got it above 80 or so with no
hard
launches... just getting a feel for the car over all) but less
than
30 minutes in to our joy ride there was an odd noise like a
hose
popping off and then it sounded like a turbo spun down. I thought
we
may have somehow blown the Y pipe off even though we were not
really
boosting at the time. We pulled in to a gas station and checked
it
out. Everything looked OK so we cranked the car back up. The
noise
did not return so I got some gas and we started to head back to
the
house. Just a mile or so from the station the noise can back.
We
pulled off the side of the road with the car running and popped
the
hood. Deep down in the engine we could hear the truth. Rod
knock.
What else can go wrong with this car???
It cost me $85 to tow
the thing to my friend's house then another $60
to tow it to Southlake
Mitsubishi the next day. So now I'm down $145
(I hope my insurance will
get me some of that back) and the full tear
down on the engine to check out
the damage is going to cost over
$300. They already quoted me a price
on a new short block after ~5
seconds of having it running at the
dealer. They asked me what
repairs the dealer had done to it and I
relayed the history (blown
head gaskets due to overheat, dealer had gaskets
replaced, etc). The
Mitsubishi mechanic said that when the gaskets went
that the heads
caused stress on the rods, crank, and bearings and that you
could not
simply patch something like that with new head gaskets.
So
now I am sitting here with a warranty that is about to reach it's
pay off cap
and a car that is going to drive me to drinking (and I
just
quit)...
Does anyone know where I can get a short block for under the
$3,100
that the Mitsu dealer quoted me? I will find out today what
the
parts are that have to be repaired so I am hoping the crank will be
OK
and all I will need is some bearings, a rod, and the misc. seals
and what not
to ensure the engine will run for more than 2 hours this
time.
:(
I looked at the schematics for the engine. What the heck is
so
special about this 3.0L V6 that makes it cost 3X that of a small
block
V8???
Just trying to take it all in stride...

chromed but designed

RE: Team3S: Engine rebuild or new short block?
I'm definitely not an
engine expert, but I have seen claims of short blocks
for the $2000 range,
maybe even new.
If I were you, i might take it up with the original
dealer of the car. What
are the possibilities of all this trouble with
less than 3 hours worth of
driving on the car... There ~HAD~ to be
something wrong with it before...
What makes our engines so expensive is
that they are manufactured to much
much higher tolerances than your basic
american v-8... ya figure an
american v-8 may be good for 100K
miles... the average import motor is
generally good for at least 200K,
maybe 300K or more miles.... (obviously
not in your situation)
Regardless, the variances from one engine to
another, and one cylinder to
another will be less on an import motor, rather
than a domestic
engine...

Re: Team3S: Engine rebuild or new short block?
Hi Travis,
I have
only very rarely ever heard of blown head gaskets on our cars.
I would guess
this car saw some serious abuse or negligence before
you bought it. Check out
my Garage and Links web pages. The "Engine"
section on the Links page lists
several aftermarket sources for short
and long blocks. Also check out the
discount Mitsu dealers I list.
The cheapest course of action will be to pull
the engine yourself and
have the block rebuilt. $700 for crank, $700 for
pistons, $200 for
gasket kit, $100 for bearings, $140 for tensioner and
bolts, $200 for
the oil pump assembly, plus your machine shop bills, maybe a
little
less than $3000 with sensors, etc. Or buy a used block/engine
(maybe
cheaper in the short run). Add another $2000-$3000 or so for
someone
to R&R the engine for you.
If you can afford it, this
could be an opportunity for you .... to
build that killer engine.

Im sorry to hear about your

question? Did
you check out your states lemon laws?
Also, a blown head gasket
Leads me to believe that the previous owner of
this vehicle was most likely
using, NOS. Blown head gaskets are a common
problem when using,
NOS. If this is the case you might be
able to get a lawyer to look into

RE: Team3S: Need advise on helmets
I got my Bell helmet from JAMN
Motorsports (and balaklava and neck brace).
The balaklava is a good, cheap
investment. It's more important to DRY the
stuff throughly between uses
than to CLEAN to prevent stink buildup. I
clean mine also. A friend
puts a UV bulb under the helmet to kill the
bacteria.
SIMPSON makes
good helmets and neck support's too. The neck brace is
more
important for supporting the helmet to keep you neck muscles from
getting
tired than preventing whiplash.
The only time I attach the
face shield is when the sun is low and bright: I
have Fog City tinting
on it and use it for sun shade instead of sunglasses.

Dear Members,
I am a new member to this mailing list,
and just purchased a 1995 Red 3000GT
BASE. It is a beautiful car, with 96K on
it. My question is this...there is
no service records, or owners manual in
the car, so I'm not sure if it had
it's 60K overhaul. What would be the
easiest way for me to find this out?
Also, what would be a total cost
estimate to bring this to my local
Mitsubishi dealer to have them do this
overhaul (tune up) including timing
belt, and tensioner? Also, weird
question....when playing the radio, the
bass will sometimes cut out. I can
change to the CD player, and plenty of
base. While the radio was playing last
night, after the bass cut out, I put
my blinker on, and the bass started!!
It's a stock Infinity system.
Thanks, Judson Smith

Team3S: Head gasket question
Dear Members,
I have just recently
had a full engine rebuild done on my '96 VR-4
and had something happen which
I've never heard of before. When the
shop doing the rebuild completed
the assembly and added coolant there
was a leak coming from the rear bank
head gasket. The owner told me
that he called the gasket company who
told him that because our head
gaskets are stainless steel shim type gaskets
they "can" leak until the
engine has been run for 15-20 minutes.
Apparently the theory is that
the engine heat activates the polymer on the
gasket which in turn seals
the leak. Well, they ran the car and
sure enough the leak stopped.
Has anyone on this list ever heard
of this before? I intend to drive
aggressively and don't want to do
another rebuild due to a faulty head
gasket seal which would not be covered
by warranty. The whole leaking
thing has me very nervous as I've never
seen this before.

Judson,
Congrats on the new purchase .... I hope
you enjoy the style of a unique almost
one of a kind vehicle (not many of
these 3S cars around anymore). I don't have
the answers to all your
questions, but I'll answer a few for ya ....
1. Service records ...
unless all service was done at a dealer or perhaps 1
specific garage or shop,
you're going to have a very hard time getting copies of
the service
records. I'd ask the previous owner where he took the car for
service
and then contact that shop and ask if they have a copy of the service
records
for your car (by VIN). It's worth a shot anyway.
2. The
Owners manual ... you should be able to get a copy of this from any
Mitsu
dealer for 15 bucks or so. Or you could always try E-bay as
well.
3. On the 60K service ... again if it was taken to a
dealership they'll have a
record of it on their computer ... you probably
just want to have them run your
VIN and that way you can check if there are
any recalls that need to be done and
any repair or service work that a Mitsu
dealer did on the car. Otherwise ...
you'll have to contact the
previous owner to find out where he took the car.
I'll leave the other
questions to someone that owns a 3KGT
Base.
Best,
Greg

Team3S: Off topic: PRO rally rules
I am trying to find out what the
rules are regarding SCCA Divisional PRO
rallies; ie, what do I have to do to
my stock 92 Eagle Talon AWD to run a
divisional PRO? Fire extinguishers, roll
bar, PRO license, school?
The SCCA web site is useless -- all they want
to do is sell me a set of
rules for $20. I ask what time it is and they want
to tell me how to build
a clock.
Can anybody point me to a site that
has basic rules on PRO rallies?

I am running 850-900 deg egt @ idle and 1400-1500 @ 0 boost in 4th

cruising at 70 mph this seems high. At boost it pegs the gauge. I
have
an egt for both banks the back bank runs hotter. Should I check
the
timming? This is a brand new motor with JE pistons that were coated
by
HPC. I have 15h turbos gutted pre cat ATR down pipe no main cat and
a

I'd like somebody to tell me
what the rules are in English first before
having to batter my way through a
badly written rulebook filled with a
bunch of dreary details.
Surely,
SOMEBODY can tell me: "Hey dude, if you are stock and running Group
XYZ, all
you'll need are five-point harnesses, two fire extinguishers and
Snell 95
helmets." Or whatever.
That lets me know what I need to get
started.
If I decide to do it, then I'll get a rulebook to make sure I do it
right.
Geez, all I want to do is run one 'lil ol' Divisional Pro to see
if I can
still blast down a gravel road with gusto.
I don't want to
install $10,000 worth of equipment if I don't gotta.
I don't see why this
is so hard or so secret. Are they trying to keep
people away from PRO
rallying? General info like this should be readily
available, not hidden away
in a rulebook.

Re: Team3S: 1995 Base 3000 GT
Judson,
Congrats on the new
purchase .... I hope you enjoy the style of a unique
almost
one of a kind
vehicle (not many of these 3S cars around anymore). I don't
have
the
answers to all your questions, but I'll answer a few for ya ....
1.
Service records ... unless all service was done at a dealer or perhaps
1
specific garage or shop, you're going to have a very hard time
getting
copies of
the service records. I'd ask the previous owner
where he took the car for
service and then contact that shop and ask if they
have a copy of the
service
records for your car (by VIN). It's
worth a shot anyway.
2. The Owners manual ... you should be able to
get a copy of this from any
Mitsu dealer for 15 bucks or so. Or you
could always try E-bay as well.
3. On the 60K service ... again if
it was taken to a dealership they'll
have a
record of it on their computer
... you probably just want to have them run
your
VIN and that way you can
check if there are any recalls that need to be done
and
any repair or
service work that a Mitsu dealer did on the car.
Otherwise
...
you'll have to contact the previous owner to find out where
he took the car.
I'll leave the other questions to someone that owns a
3KGT Base.
Best,
Greg

I am looking for a set of 95-96
STEALTH headlights or BLACK 3000GT
headlights (both the left and right).
These can not be the 94 version made
of glass but the 95+ version made with a
plastic material of some sort.
Attached is a picture (sorry but I don't want
any confusion about this and I
don't have a webpage).
I only need the
plastic headlight "housing" that the bulbs go into and
attaches to the car. I
repeat, I am NOT looking for bulbs. Please let me
know if anyone has them and
are in excellent shape. No stress cracking or
moisture problems due to the
fact my 94 already has this problem. Thanks.

1995 Base 3000 GT
Eric- thanks for the reply...unfortuneatley I bought it
from a dealer who
bought it at auction. It has a clean title, etc. Question,
if I bring it to
a Mitsu dealer, if the 60K was done in say FL or CA, do you
think they would
have it in their local system here in Maine? Just
curious...thanks.
