stock clutch.

Subject: Team3S:
Gas Guage is suddenly backwards ?!?
Hi Guys/Gals,
I have just
discovered an interesting problem. I had noticed that last weekend that I had
1/2 a
tank of gas and that as this week has progressed the gas guage has
been going UP on a daily basis.
Tonight the "low fuel" light came on
indicating that I was almost out of gas, even though the guage
was
indicating 9/10th of a tank (almost full). After putting $20 (at 87.9c /Litre)
the guage didn't
move, and I am assuming it is now dead.
I'm assuming
that this is electrical in nature, but I'm wondering where to start looking.
Would
this be caused by the ground wire coming off of the sending unit in
the gas tank or is there
somewhere else that I should start looking
first?
Thanks,
Bill

Team3S: Blown Head Gasket...
Hi Team,
My RT/TT is blowing major
smoke. Diagnois from GTPro
is blown (composit) head gaskets. All other
components
should be fine. The car runs fine.. just lots of
stinky
smoke.. especially when accel and letting off
the gas..
Now the
questions...
1) How does one go about in fixing this problem?
Simply
remove the head and replace the gaskets without
pulling the engine?
2)
Does the heads needs to be machined smooth?
3) Just what other things
should/needs to be
done?
Thanks,
George

If you have white puffs of smoke and coolant in the
oil then yeah it's your
head gasket. But you also said you have oil in
the exhaust pipe - that
implies to me that you're burning oil, which is not
related to the head
gasket (instead it's related to worn
pistons/rings). If that's the case then
you do not only need new head
gaskets but possibly a rebuild. Either way I
wouldn't drive it very
much longer like this, it can't be good on your engine
to drive it with
water in the oil. If your oil burning is not very severe
then maybe
you should just do the head gasket, but I figure while you're
doing the
labor / spending the money you may as well do it all if you plan on
keeping
the car for a while.

"Simply" is not the right word but it
is really not necessary to pull the
engine.

On mine, they were perfect. At least you
must have them checked.

While the heads are off anyways, I'd let them be proted and
gasketmatched,
as well as the exhaust manofilds can be machined. Look at my
project page
for details.

Another word to the gasket stuff
:

When one is telling you that the
engine must be pulled for this work then
he's trying to make money. And I
can insure you that when they do the job,
they will find more stuff that can
be done or "should" be done. Hey,
George, you are a money cow ... would be
great having such a client over
here, hehe :))
Regarding the gasket,
I used the Fel-Pro gasket kit from Carparts with the
30% off coupon and it
was the same quality - if not really the same - liek
the one that was
originally on my 93'3000GT installed. I'd change both the
same time as to
make sure everything is right and well tourqued down
afterwards.

Team3S: Ticking noise from the front
I'm having a strange problem that
I've been ignoring while waiting to
get the car in for a full checkover but
it's getting worse so I wanted
to check with you guys in the know before I go
to the mechanic here (who
won't know anything about our car).
It's a
strange ticking that starts (or becomes apparent) above 100rpm in
each gear
and gets faster with the revs up to about 3000rpm at which
point I think it's
still there but engine/wind/road noise is too high
for me to hear it. If I
accelerate I can hear it and then if I just push
the clutch in I can hear it
dying down clearly with the revs.
I sounds like it's coming from the
front/centre of the engine. Sometimes
on cold start first thing in the
morning there's a clattering noise for
a few seconds up front which I think
may be related. It settles down to
the ticking after 2-3 secs.
Any
ideas??
Oh why did I sell my Japanese import MR2 Turbo???? :)
At least
they can work on them here (celica gt4 was sold here).

I've developed a similar sound. When
I'm under the hood listening closely,
it does sound like it is coming from
the center of the engine like you
stated. I haven't noticed the clattering
noise upon startup and the ticking
seems to be less when
off-throttle.
Have you noticed a decrease in fuel mileage? I'm going for
a long drive
today so I hope to be able to ascertain if my mileage is
suffering along
with the ticking.
I'll take any and all input as the
tick is enough to drive a man to

Wrong diagnostic - Piston Slap???
Curt and Jeff,
Thanks so much
for all your help on this ticking noise with the SOHC. I am
seriously
doubting the diagnostic the Mitsu mechanic gave me. So, I will
make
another appointment for a 2nd diagnostic ($70) to a local Dodge Dealer
that
had in the past one mechanic that really knew his stuff (and also fixed
my
brother's TT before). If this diagnostic turns out to be related to
the
tune-up, then I can go to back to the Mitsu dealer and hold them
responsible
for a possible "slip-up.". Then I will at least have a
case, although they
could still stick to their diagnostic. First thing
first...I will wait for
the new diagnostic. Keep your fingers
crossed. I will keep you informed of
the progress.
Thanks
guys.

This whole "piston slap" thing
sounds fishy to me. As Jeff said, its a
gradual thing. Which
means you should have heard this noise before the 120k
service. A loose
belt or inproperly timed car could make these noises. If
the timing is
really off, the pistons can hit valves. I've got my money on
a mechanic
slip up. You might want to get a second opinion from
another
mechanic.

Team3S: 1994-1996 VR-4 options
Attention Second Gen VR-4 owners ... I am
wondering if anyone else wants to
submit their information that I can send
back to the list. I can strip off
the VIN if you prefer but it is
helpful if someone wants to search the CAPS
program for a car just like
theirs. I am most in need of knowing what
different options are there
since I am looking for a coilover suspension but
without the ECS (the dreaded
Sunroof or no sunroof debate) I have a
different spring perch in the
back.
So I'd like to gather this and then work with the suspension guys
and submit
the results to the list. This can also be helpful for our
Team3S page where
we list different options offered on cars and

Here are two examples (I've stripped the name and VIN for now

You should check out Frey Racing if you're looking
for another top speed
shop. When they were in Mountainview, they had
about a dozen NASCAR &
SCCA projects in-house, and their dyno shop (2W)
was run by a top
ex-racer named Terry Barnard. He's opened his own shop
in Monterey and
they appear to have moved to Milpitas, but if it's the same
folks, you
should give them a call. Impressive bunch... 349 Sango

Hi Brian,
Fuse number 4 in
the multi-purpose fuse (to the left of the driver's

following:
Audio
Motor antenna control unit
Auto-cruise

ETACS unit
The ETACS (Electronic Time and Alarm Control

Maybe this fuse is blown? This could happen if these fellows did
not
disconnect the battery before working on the car. See my web
