Team3S: Help! Car Smokes and burns oil after idling..... bad valve guides?
My car.......95 3000GT VR-4 w/ 980000 miles.
My problem is
this........
After idiling my car for several minutes, hitting the gas,
whether it's just
blipping the gas pedal or actually driving, my car will
emit a huge white
cloud of smoke from the exhaust, then go away after several
minutes of
driving. Note this only happens if I let the car idle for
sometime. I could
drive the car for hours and not see a hint of smoke while
driving. But once
I stop and let it idle for awhile, it'll emit smoke from
the exhaust upon
hitting the gas pedal after it's idled for some
time.
Now most of the time the smoke seems white, however I've heard that
the
problem is most likely worn valve guides, and that the smoke is from
burning
oil.
My question is if it is oil, wouldn't the smoke be blue?
However it does
smell of oil.
Also what are the chances that it may be
the turbo that is causing the smoke
and not the valve guides?
Lastly,
if it is the valve guides, how much can I expect to have these
repaired, and
can I trust my local Mitsu dealership to handle the job.
Thanks in
advance to all replies.

Seasons greetings to all members!
One
question: Does anyone know if the Nippondenso 720's used for our cars
is
the
EXACT same ones used in the
DSM's?
If so, there seems to be a lot of them for sale that I
can get
cheaper,
but I wanted to make sure first.
Thanks in

To my knowledge white smoke is associated with water or
antifreeze. Usually
if a head gasket goes bad or if you cracked one of your
heads you get white
smoke. I am not 100% sure if it would do it all the time
or not. Just
thought I would put in my 2 cents

If your car is emitting the bluish smoke other than pure white,
and it is
only after idling this happends, then it could also easily be a bad
seal on
a turbo (if it is a turbo). My Eclipse did this, but only under
vacuum
conditions at first, and eventually it started doing it after the car
had
idled for awhile...

Team3S: Power steering fluid
Is there a recommended power steering
fluid?
I'm running 0W-30 AMSoil synthetic in the engine. I'm gonna change
all the
transmission/transaxle fluids to synthetic ASAP.
On the door
panel of this VR-4, it says that the front tires were originally
245/45 17"
and the rear were 245/45 18"... Is this right? The car has 18"
wheels all the
way around now that all look to be factory...
I had to stop and replace
tires part way home. The tires that were
originally on the rear were
265/35ZR18 BF Goodrich. The front were
245/40ZR18. Was this setup
OK?
My snow tires haven't shown up yet. Still waiting, cleaning, making
the list
of things to attend to on the new ride...
Merry Christmas
everybody!

Team3S: Power steering fluid
I don't think power steering fluid is a real
big deal in our cars, but just
to be on the safe side, I ordered some Redline
Power Steering Fluid for my
car.
Are you sure those sizes weren't just
two different options???
VR-4's have always come with 245/45-17 or
245/40-18 from the factory,
depending on if you got the upgrade for the 18's
or not.
265/35-18 is a popular upgrade size from the 245/40-18 that comes
on the
car, but if your car is AWD, or even FWD, for that matter - you should
keep
all the tire sizes the same - all the way around. If anything, a
little
more width in the front would be better than in the rear. (Our
cars tend to
understeer, not oversteer from the factory)
Also, on an
AWD car, even slight differences in tire size may have adverse
affects on the
center differential and vicious coupling.

0W-30 is pretty light for a turbo car.
You might want to consider moving up
to a 10W-30 full synthetic, that should
give a little more bearing
protection.

I think the door
panel is confusing. They all came with either size all the
way
around. There weren't any combinations sold. The 18's were still
a
factory option in '95, if I remember correctly.

My opinion is that's not OK. To run staggered sizes
like that and still
match the outer diameters of the tires you would need to
run 280/35-18 on
one end and 245/40-18 on the other end. 265/35-18 is
7% out of spec.
Whether that's enough to cause center differential damage or
not, I don't
know for sure. I do know that Mitsubishi has recommended
to use the exact
same tires all the way around whenever possible to avoid
minor sizing
inconsistencies, so Mitsubishi seems to think it is an issue
even just
between brands/types of tires not even necessarily sized
differently.
Maybe it is okay, but do you want to bet a $6,000 tranny on
it? Guess it
depends on how lucky you feel. ;-)
