Crankshaft
Hey all,
Bad news from the machine shop.
The crankshaft of my '91 turbo engine is
cracked in two places. I
guess I'll be getting a new one.
Two questions. 1. Has
this happened to anyone
else?
2. Are the newer cranks cast like mine, or forged?
Thanks,
Dave

On that very subject, I was out with the real estate guy
today, looking for
a new house, and I wuz driving cuz his van broke.
We took the VR4 out on this absolutely fabulous backroad two-lane
highway
with a string of linked 100+ mph turns. I'd never seen these before,
so I
was keeping it below 110 while I scoped them out. What a road!
There's
about 6-8 miles of high speed twisty bits and I can't wait to try
them
again, now that I know what to expect. They are very racetrack-like
turns,
because the road is wide open with no trees, so you can look maybe a
half
mile beyond the turns and see other cars, cops and
obstacles.
When we got to the prospective house, I said to the broker:
"Center Point
wasn't nearly as far from Cedar Rapids as I thought."
He
said, "It doesn't take long when you run the whole thing at over 100
mph."
Bet he doesn't get a ride like that every day.

Team3S: 97 Base Gas
I've got a 97 base model 3000GT and I ordered the
manual for it but haven't gotten in yet. Was just wondering if anyone here
knows how much gas/miles you have left with the orange light goes off. I'm
assuming about 1/8 of a tank or less (since that's where most cars with low fuel
lights go on at). Thanks in
advance.
John

Typically it is about 2 gallons from
the light coming on to where the gas is
too low for the fuel pump to pull the
fuel into the intake. Miles will
depend on the fuel economy of your
particular car.

Yeah, 2 gallons sounds about right... I've gone
well over 40 miles with
the light on in my '94 Stealth NT (I didn't say I was
smart...!).
YMMV - I certainly wouldn't try squeezing more than 25-30
miles out of
a turbo. And don't forget the possibility of sucking up
debris when you
get close to the bottom of the tank. Don't let it get
low if you can
avoid it, obviously...

Team3S: Donor struts wanted
I need a complete set of front and rear
struts (no springs) for a 94+ VR4
to use for experimentation purposes.
Perhaps you are getting your struts
changed, or kept an old worn-out set,
thinking, "someday, somebody might
need these."
Someday is here.
Somebody needs them.
We are going to convert Mitsu struts to accept
Penske shocks, and it will
take a few weeks of fiddling and adjustments to
get them right. Then I'll
track test them (which is why we need 94 or later
struts). If all goes
well, we hope to make Penske shocks available for
Mitsus.
One very kind soul out there has offered me a set, but they were
off a 93
and no one can tell me if 93 will fit a 94. I would take them in a
New York
minute, but I don't know if they will fit. Therefore, I gotta come
back and
ask again if anyone has any 94+ struts they would care to donate to
the
cause, or sell dirt cheap. I'll pay for the shipping.
Please come
back off list to
merritt@cedar-rapids.net.
