RE: Team3S: Viper Hunting
Let me know when you are ready to hunt the
Vipers and we can meet up out at
Portland International Raceway. I have
both a VR4 (with a long list of
mods) and a 99GTS coupe (with a smaller list
of mods). My Viper is quite a
bit faster at the track than my VR4 (1:21 in
the VR4, 1:17 in the Viper) but
I'd love to see how some of the more hopped
up TTs do against the Dodge.
Biggest problem with the VR4 right now is
weight (+400lbs over Viper), HP
(VR4 approx = 410, Viper = 510) and Torque
(VR4 approx = 390, Viper = 550).
Cheers -

Hunting
Rich,
My experience with upgrades leads me to believe
that
switching to at least a
500cc/min injector along with a simple
fuel/MAF controller
will make the
single biggest contribution to adding
more boost. After
gutting all the
cats, switching to 13g's, and high
flow fuel pump, I noticed
little
difference in pull and my EGT's were
pushing 950 C on any
extended WOT run.
After adding bigger injectors, my
car came ALIVE! My first
open track
event, I ran a conservative
15psi as my instructor and I
kept a close eye on
my EGT temp. It
never went past 850 C. I dialed up to
18psi for a lap
but
EGT's still remained below 850 C. I had to dial back down
as my
corner
entry speeds were so much faster that I found I would need
to
re-learn the
track not to mention your brake concerns will take on
new
meaning when you
get these things running at
18+psi.

Thanks!

The most likely cause is a burned out lamp. Does the
suspension seem to
change softer in tour and harder in sport? If the
shocks seem to be
functioning correctly then the lamp would be the #1
suspect. If there's no
difference in feel when switching modes then you
need to go through the ECS
troubleshooting section in the service
manual.

Engine Light Turning On
Hello everybody,
I've managed to tune my
VPC much better since I took Jeff Lucius' advice
and went to Bob Fontana's
page. The only problem I am having now is
that under hard acceleration,
once my car hits about 4,000-4,500 RPMs,
the check engine light turns on and
I see a bunch of black smoke pouring
out of the exhaust. I have a
feeling that I am running WAY too rich.
Does anyone know how I can get my car
to run a little leaner at full
throttle?
Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
Thanks, everyone!!
Boris

RE: Team3S: Let's go Viper Hunting!
Good luck. I was on the same quest a
couple of years ago. I think you
accurately called out the cars that were
problems for me. In the end, I
wound up retiring the VR4 to street duty
and buying a Viper. BTW - I think
you need a bit more than 400HP to
keep up with the Vipers since they weigh
about 400lbs less than a standard
VR4 and dyno 405 at the rear wheels out of
the box.
At the track, I
was running 1.1bar with the stock turbos. Lowered an inch
with all the
plumbing you mentioned. I could keep up with all of the older
vipers
(pre-97) at PIR and in fact, I could beat many of the newer
('97+)
Vipers. The problem I had was when I came across a good driver
in a newer
Viper, they did fairly well in the corners and pulled away on the
straights.
Not to mention that some of my friends had modded Vipers that
could keep up
with me on the corners. Actually, having one of them hang
with the VR4 in
the corners was what finally made me break down and buy a
Viper. After all,
not much chance to hang with them on the straights
and if one with
relatively minor mods can hang with me on the corners, it
felt like a losing
battle.
Tell you what - I really love the VR4 in
the off season. Still a great car!!

I need some good tech advice on engine mods. All
I have
right now is a K&N.
My requirements are somewhat different than
all you
dragstrip demons,
because I run open track events on road courses.
As it stands right now, a VR4 is the equal of every
street-driven,
licensed
car on a road course, with the exception of Vipers, TT
AWD
Porsches, and
Cobra Rs (and maybe new M3s and 911s, but I haven't seen
any
yet). With
upgraded brakes and suspension, we can stay with
them
through the twisty
bits, but they tend to pull away (or catch up) on
the
straights with their
superior horsepower.
I want to build a
car that can at least stay with them on
straights. I
don't have to be
faster, just NOT SLOWER. I have followed
enough TT
Porsches to know that
they are not that much faster than us,
but they are
definitely faster in a
straight line. And you haven't lived
until you see a
Cobra R or a modded
Supra in your mirrors, coming up on you
at 140+ like a
freight
train.
I figure I need 400+ hp to stay with them.
450 hp probably
would be right on.
Here is what I am planning:
Blitz DSBC boost
controller (because it's simple and has
multiple
settings), running 15 psi
mostly, 18 psi occasionally.
Spearco water injection (to keep combustion
temps down)
(There is slim to no chance I will change these
unless
DSBCs are no
longer available. My buddy Curt G knows how to make
these
work, and that
seems to be 95% of the battle)
ATR
downpipe.
Gut cats, remove main cat
Run custom-made single exhaust to
straight through muffler.
At the track, I will run 100+ octane racing
gas.
Think this will do it?
Any other suggestions?
When do I start
getting into problems with overheated
intercoolers?
Do I need a knock
sensor?
I have been blowing off my Y-pipe lately -- is it time for a
new
one?
Suggestions?
Remember, I am not looking for 11 second quarter
miles here.
I need a system that will give me good, constant
horsepower
for 20-30
MINUTES at a time -- sort of like our friends do on
the
Autobahns --
without frying the engine internals or overheating
the
engine.
All suggestions welcome, especially from Germany and
other
open trackers.
Remember, I need power AND reliability.
In
2002, we'll probably go to a dedicated track car with 600
hp, depending
on
what kind of success Geoff has...but this year, I just
want to have
the
fastest street-driven car on the track.

Big Red Porsche brakes w/Hawk Blues, SS lines, Ford

plates
(Penske shocks next)

HI everyone, i am really sad
after crashing my car. Someone decided to
leave a plastic turp on the
freeway on a foggy night and i was the
unfortuante one to find it. I
really loved my car and the worst part is i
couldn't afford full
coverage. At 18 years old i don't have that great of an
income, what
do you guys suggest i should do? Should i try to fix the car,
or give
it away. I need a new door, the front end is looking bad, the only
good thing is that the engine is still running. Please help, anything
goes
right now. Thank you in advance.

If anyone has the time, could they
have a look @ this website

is.
And if anyone knows where one can be obtained would be useful.
Thanks

Team3S: Got trunk parts left?
To all those folks who were parting out
their 3000GTs:
Anybody got the trunk trays left? These are the two
floor trays on the
driver's side of the spare tire well. I would like to
relocate my battery
and CD player to this area, and I don't want to cut up my
stock trays. I
want to keep them pristine in case I have to put the car back
stock some day.
(Can you imagine when I eventually put my open tracking
car back on the
market as a stocker? It'll have roll cage brackets welded to
the floor,
funny-looking hoses and stuff under the hood, the remnants of
brake ducts
and so on. Yet, the ad can say, "Low Mileage! Driven only on
weekends by an

Please contact me off list if you got
