For anyone with a 1995 VR-4 with automatic sunroof AND a Ground Control
coilover kit please reply.

I have searched their site as well as Eibach's and can't find the listing
for their kits in my car.  Does anyone have a 95+ with auto sunroof and
suspension mods?  If so then what is it (Tein, Tokico, GAB, Koni, etc.).  I
have heard that there is moderate suspension bit differences between the 95+
cars with manual and automatic sunroof.

Eibach makes a whole pile of springs for various people to various
specifications.  Whether a given spring is designated for a VR4 or not may
not be known by Eibach, and in fact likely is not.  I have no doubt that the
only "Eibach" spring is as stated.  This is the commodity spring available
from Eibach off-the-shelf.

The Ground Control kits use Eibach springs and come in any rate desired.
You specify the spring rate at order placement and get what you want, just
maybe not *when* you want it depending upon the production run Eibach is
doing at the time, GC stock and the phases of Jupiter's moons.

I've got the same GC setup as Rich complete with Eibach springs 'cept I
think mine are a bit lighter on the ass end and come in spec'ed at 300 lbs.

Subject: Team3S: Car won't start...Update 1

Hi Gang,

Last night, I installed my buddies ECU.  After more than normal cranking, then
engine finally fired up (rich fuel smell like a "flooded" carb).  So I thought I
had pinpointed my problem to my ECU.  I opened up the box, and it looks new
inside.  No visible corrosion or discoloration on either side of the board.  The
capacitors & chips "look" fine, no smells either.  When you folks talk about
leaky capacitors, are you referring to an electical property in which they won't
hold a charge, or a visual property in which they ooze their insides (like an
old dry-cell battery)?  Next, I plugged my ECU back in and lo and behold the
engine started!  I stopped it for a minute, then restarted.  It ran for another
30 seconds then shut off.  It would not restart again although the starter would
crank very strong.  By this time, my friend had completed reinstalling his unit,
so I couldn't swap his in again.  Perhaps I can coax him back tonight and we can
try my ECU in his car and drive around for awhile.  I guess this is the best and
cheapest way to continue diagnosis.  If my ECU causes his car to quit running,
it IS the problem.

However, the other thing I suspect is perhaps my aftermarket alarm ignition kill
feature is malfunctioning.  I'm not sure I know how to test this.  It has it's
own bundle of wires tapped into the ECU harness, a real mess.  When I pulled my
ECU out, I had removed the alarm's ground wire.  Initially when I installed my
friend's ECU, I didn't reconnect the alarm ground, so the starter wouldn't crank
and solenoids were silent when I tried to start.  I'm not sure if the alarm,  a
CodeAlarm NightHawk,  has both an ignition kill and a starter kill.  I'll call
some alarm/stereo shops today for information.

So, the diagnosis continues.  Any comments, ideas, and advice are greatly
welcome.  Thanks.

Subject: Team3S: Tire question?

Everybody,

What is the difference between the different speed ratings?

W - 168 MPH
Y - 186 MPH
Z - 149+ MPH

I am going to shop around for some tires soon and always wanted to know
which rating gives you the most safety when you run at high speeds.  My
brother ran his car at 169 MPH, so I guess that would be a top speed.  Can Z
rated tires be run that fast, or do I need W or even Y tires to make sure
I'm safe (and so they won't age prematurely from too much heat)?  What does
149+ mean (how fast can they really go)?

Thanks everybody.

- -MIKE-

PS.  I don't want to have a tire failure when I do high speeds (169 MPH)
every now and then?

Visual oozing like an old battery.  Sometimes you can't see it if it is just
starting to leak out the bottom of the capacitor.  It usually smells like
rotten fish.

Team,

This has probably been adressed in the past, so forgive me if it has.

Is the ECU interchangeable between the different years?  The part that
concerns me is if I can swap out the ECUs in my brother's 94 TT and my 95
VR4 with a 96+ ECU?  I guess this question is valid for those with 1st gen
cars also.  If this is possible, I/we all would have the option of getting
96+ ECU's from junk yards and make our cars OBD II compliant (for which
there is datalogging software readily available between $100-300).

Michael,

Thanks Michael for your reply.  This helps me for the W and Y ratings,
however I still am not sure how to interpret the Z (149+) rating.  How fast
can Z rated tires go (sustained/peak)?

So far my assumption is that the Y tires are the best (186 MPH).  Is this
correct?

I agree.

Z-rated tires should be fine for quick bursts up to top speed.  You aren't
going to want to sustain a speed that high for very long.  It is VERY hard
on the motor since the intercoolers get heat-soaked well before you get to
top speed.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend going 170 on any sort of public road.  Your
stopping distance is SO long that there is almost no way to avoid an
unexpected situation with any level of confidence.  If something does happen
to a tire, there is a high probability you WILL go off the road and it ain't
gonna be pretty.

Team,

Thanks Darren Schilberg, Michael Crose and Charles Willis for clarifying my
tire rating question.  I will look around and see if there is much
difference in the prices on these tires, but if I can I will shoot to get a
W (186 MPH) rating otherwise I will stick to the Z rating that I've always
had and that was good up to now.

Just to clarify, these high speed runs up to 169 MPH I only do every once in
a blue moon when all the conditions are right (3-5 mile straight stretch, no
cars on the road).  Otherwise, in short 1 mile stretches, the most I can get
up to realistically is 155 mph (if my exit turn speed is ~100 MPH) before I
have to break for the next turn.  It is impossible to sustain these high
speeds.  However, I do sustain 100 MPH on a daily basis on the way to school
and back (if I avoid rush hour), and on longer trips, I sustain 110-120 mph,
traffic permitting again.
