sensor help
Hi All
I have just come back from a dyno test on my
92
GTO TT
The mechanic there says my Lambda sensor isn't working and that i am
running
way too rich.
First of all i haven't heard of a Lamda sensor on
our cars but he says it
measures oxygen on the exhaust so is he talking about
the oxygen sensor?
And if so, where is it located on a Twin Turbo and how can
you tell if it is
bad and which one?
(i believe there are two)
When i
do find the bad one, how easy are they to take out and replace, and
do you
need special tools?
Sorry to sound stupid but i have never tried looking for
these sensors
before.
Thanks in advance
Martin

I love my airbag
Hello all,
I'm writing to announce sad news... my
91 Pearl White RT/TT is in tough
shape right now. A 2000 Isuzu Rodeo
turned left in front of me, and I
smacked it good. It took out my
entire left side (my car) and my airbag
deployed.
An airbag feels like
a real soft pillow, and that's exactly the thought
I had - why is there a
pillow in my car?? After a 50mph+ (combined
speed), head on impact
accident, I crawled out of my car to help the
people in the other
vehicle. And called 911.
Moral of the story:
Stealths/3000GT's are great cars. Seat belts
rule. Airbags
rule.
I have no injuries, and my car took good care of me. Now its my
turn to
take care of her, in return.
I will keep you posted, until
then, buckle up everyone! (And make sure
your SRS light isn't
on!!!!)

The headlight assembly is molded
together and does not come apart. You need
to buy the whole
assembly. The '94 headlight assemblies were made out of
glass.
'95 + are made out of some sort of plastic. It appears that the
plastic
ones hold up better against the moisture problem. If you buy used
ones,
keep in mind that the Mitsu ones are colored, whereas all Stealth ones
are
black. Not sure how well it turns out, but I think some people
have
painted the outside of the lens cover. I suppose this works better
on the
plastic ones.

Mitsubish and
Dodge do not sell parts for the Getrags installed in the
Vr-4s a Stealth
RT/TTs (respectively). Kormex makes some of the parts,
and may be able to
sell your mechanic the parts you need, but under
normal conditions I don't
think they stock the 2nd-3rd gears
synchronizers. They will sell you a
rebuilt unit for about 1/2 the price
of a Mitsu tranny (by the way, Mitsu is
selling rebuilt units too and
they are built in the U.S., not
Japan).
Here's a list of contacts for Getrag rebuilts and
parts...you'll
probably have to let your mechanic talk to them to see what
they can
work out:
GETRAG SOURCES:
1. Kormex at 800-429-5464
2. Southern Gear at 770-435-1461
3. GTR Motorsports...e-mail Max
Mayants at
NYMaxxNY@aol.com.
4. MD Auto
in California. (619) 390-0450
5. Transmission Mart in Florida
(877)298-TRAN
6. Drivetrain Specialists of Las Vegas - Las Vegas NV, 89102
For orders:1-800-216-1632, for technical info: us at
1-702-876-3100
or send email to
ujoints@intermind.net.
I haven't
heard terribly good things about Transmission Mart, even
though they CLAIM
they are manufacturing all their own parts and have a
lifetime warranty.
Southern Gear and Drivetrain Specialties are pretty
pricey (Drivertrain
Specialties almost costs as much as Mitsu).
Kormex and MD Auto have been
working these transaxles a long time and
they probably have the most
experience and better references than the
others. GTR Motorsports used to
have some parts, but I don't know if
they're still distributing
them.
Good Luck,

Re: Team3S: 02 sensor help
Hi Martin,
Interesting comments from a
"dyno test mechanic"` since the ECU does NOT USE
the O2 sensor information to
determine A/F when under moderate to heavy load
or acceleration. The O2
sensor is used in a feedback loop at idle, cruising,
and light-load
acceleration. What were you "dynoing", idle? :)
If your engine is running
rich under load, replacing the O2 sensors on your
car will not fix that
because they are are monitoring sensors only at that
point; the ECU is using
other info to determine the injector pulse width and
timing advance. If the
sensors ARE bad, then idle and cruising will be
affected.
Now the dyno
shop may install their own lambda (with a "b" right?) sensor in
the exhaust
pipe; is that what you are referring to? How about scanning the
dyno results
and showing them too us? Many of us are starved for such info.
The O2
sensors are located in the exhaust housings just "after" the turbos.
There
are heat shields near these housings so the sensors may be difficult
to see.
The connectors for the sensors are very easy to find (at least on my
'92 TT)
and you can follow the wires back to the sensors (kind of). The
connector for
the rear sensor sits on top of the engine, between the 2 valve
covers, near
the fuel rail and injectors. The insulation is often pulled
back a little to
reveal yellow wires. The connector for the front sensor is
near the oil fill
cap, towards the front of the car and down a little. If
you are new to these
cars and want to learn more, the Manuals on CD by
Vineet for $35 are an
outstanding bargain (see my web site Links page for
link).
To tell if
the O2 sensor is bad will require you to monitor its voltage
output under
various engine conditions. This is most easily done with the
TMO datalogger
or an A/F meter like the ARM1 from Split Second. You could
also tap into the
O2 connector/wires directly or into the ECU connector and
use a voltmeter. A
properly functioning O2 sensor will change voltage in a
sinousoidal pattern
from near 0.0 to near 1.0 volts at the rate of 1 cycle
about every 2
seconds during warm idle (and after the O2 sensor is warm).
As RPM increase,
the cycle rate will increase to at least 1 or more per
second. The pattern
should be fairly smoothly varying, meaning that there
should not be a bunch
of little or big jitters or very-rapid variations.
When you are driving and
accelerate the car, the O2 readings will stop
cycling and stay at a
near-fixed value up near 1.0 V (0.86 to 0.94 is
common) to indicate a rich
A/F mixture (less than 14.7; or lambda value less
than 1.0). The ECU
(not the sensor) causes the rich condition which is
necessary to make power
for acceleration. Best power is made when the A/F is
near 12.5. The lambda
value is just the ratio of the actual A/F to 14.7 (if
A/F = 12.5, then lambda
= 0.85).
As far as easy to take out and replace, I have not tried that
but have heard
that it can be troublesome. Be sure to check the function
first before
trying to replace (good advice for any sensor). The ECU uses
both O2 sensors
(3 in newer models?), but the TMO only monitors the rear
one.
