Hi all,

Just a quick note to remind everyone in the Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa,
and Illinois area that there is less than 1 WEEK to go before the first
W3SI
gathering in Southwest Wisconsin!  We've got a good mix of Stealths and
3000GTs
signed up but the more the merrier!  Check out the URL if you're
interested in more information or would like to sign up.  Hope to see
you there!

Hi Rich,

Hard IC performance numbers have generally been hard to come by. The
url below is a nice intro to heat exchanger theory and ICs.
http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/intercooler.html .
In general, if you double the heat transfer area, you double the
amount of heat transfer. This does not mean double the performance.
To actually measure performance we can start with pressure and
temperature measurements on each side of the IC. I have not done this
yet but it is on my list for winter projects (I put the car into
"insurance storage" for 6 months).

Alamo Motorsports's product at
http://www.alamomotorsports.com/ams_ic_3kgt01.html (this is the
driver's side IC) looks very similar to the GT-Alley ICs I have (pics
at http://www.3si.org/member-home/jlucius/2-ic.htm ). I have no
complaints but no hard numbers either. I also cannot compare to the
my stock system as I only had the car 2 months before the engine
rebuild. The ICs went on during the rebuild. The oil cooler must be
moved and is easily placed in the front of the radiator without
modifying the oil hoses (pictures and instructions forthcoming this
winter).

I don't see how a larger IC could be placed on the sides. These ICs
are about twice the size of stock . As it is, the bottom plastic
covers cannot be re-installed and the driver's side IC pushes down on
the front "lip" under under the bumper (look carefully at my car
pctures.

AMS claims each IC has about 19 square inches of internal heat
transfer area. A person would have to go to a front mount for more
heat transfer area. Does anyone know if the front mount IC has 38
square inches or more of internal heat transfer area?

Hi Guys,

I am researching optimal intercooler upgrades. I want to avoid a
front
mount unit. Anyone have any experience with the Alamo Series  2
system??
How about the HKS upgrade. I am wondering how much more efficient the
Alamo system is relative to the increased cost (about $600+). Anyone
with experience and wisdom to share here would be appreciated.

Hello Everybody,

It seems like in the past few days I have been writing you lots of emails.

One more problem came up, this time with my brother's 94 TT (stock).  His
engine light came on last night.  We were driving very nicely back home
from a getaway weekend.  We were still 150 miles away when this happened,
so we just kept driving home after I looked at his oil and looked in the
owner's manual what the light means.  We stopped at the first gas station
and put some fuel cleaner treatment in the gastank because it said in the
book that this is an exhaust related malfunction.  Can anyone please
elaborate on what's wrong.

Thanks everybody.

If the car still runs like normal. i think the most common reason this
happens is that an Oxygen sensor has gone bad.  You can check this by having
the car running, and testing the voltage output to the ECU from the 02
sensor.  (you'll have to look up the pins in the service manual)  Actually,
I believe the procedure for checking the o2 sensor is in there also.

Start there, then of course, come back if the o2 sensor(s) are good...

You do not need to replace the remote.  Just get a new case and take the
internals from your old one and put them in the new one.  Much cheaper and
you don't have to reprogram the car either.

I have 265/35R18 Kumho 712's on my Spyder.  They are good "for the price."
I used to have Michelin MXX3's which were obviously better, but also cost 3
times as much.  If you're willing to sacrifice a little bit of cornering on
the street, the Kumhos are absolutely worth it.  They're probably upper
middle of the pack in performance (still better than ANY all-season), but
they're DEFINITELY the cheapest.

I've been running Kumho 275/40/17 on stock rims on my '91 VR4 for 4 weeks now.
They are a tighter fit than my Firestone SZ50's were, so I don't think they
would fit unless you had lowering springs and adjusted the camber to neutral,
i.e. lots of negative camber would rub with stock wheels.

My first reaction with these tires was, "you get what you pay for".  I was not
happy.  They howled alot around corners that the Firestones were completely
silent.  It seemed to be alot easier to spin them during hard launches too.
That was the first few days.  However since then, I've been happier.  They don't
howl as much and have seemed to become more "grippy", although I really haven't
done a lot of agressive driving on them.  I can give a better opinion after I
visit the track at the end of the month.

Subject: Team3S: My car won't start :-(

Hi everyone, i posted a message over the weekend, but i  didn't guess many responces, i guess because nobody wants to write on weekends with all the games and races going on.  But anyway, i took the stereo out of my car, and when i put the stereo back in the car wouldn't start.  I checked all the fuses, and they seem to be okay, the gas pump relay seems to be okay also, i can hear it click. It sounds to me like the engine is not getting any gas.  Any suggestions, please let me know.  Thanx. Chris.

Subject: Team3S: 3000GT/Stealth Gathering in San Diego

Hi 3SI folks,

I'm trying to find out if there is any interest in having a gathering in San
Diego on Oct. 20-23.  If so, let me know and I'll start putting one together
(I'll need a little help though :)).  However,  I'm just too busy and too lazy
to make arrangements if there is little or no interest.

Here is some information and ideas I've been kicking around...

San Diego typically has very good weather in October.  It can be cool, but
normally it is warm enough to visit the beach to enjoy the sun and swim/surf.
It is a great month to be here.

I selected this weekend because the Chrysler Classic Speed Fest will be held
then.  This is a vintage auto racing event held on Coronado Island's naval base
on the tarmac.  This is a great event for the car and racing enthusiast.  Last
year I saw more original Cobras this one day than in my whole life, as well as
McLarens, Lolas, Lotus', Jaguars, Corvettes, Mustangs, antique racers, etc. (not
many Japanese vintage racers though).  The pits are open so you can peruse and
talk with the drivers and mechanics.  Another thing is that a bunch of car clubs
get special parking privileges right behind the main grandstand.  I thought this
would be a great "car show" for us to participate in.  Clubs included
Lambourghinnis, Ferraris, Porsches, Panteras, Miatas, RX7s, kit Cobras,
Prowlers, etc.  It would be great to get a dozen or so 3000GTs and Stealths
there!  Race admission is $10 buying tickets in advance.

Other things we could do would be to have a cruise/tour around the county.  We
could drive along the coast, cruise inland for some fun, twisty roads, break for
lunch, return to the coast by early afternoon.  Then we could BBQ at the beach,
or visit Carlsbad raceway for some drags ($10 to race or spectate).  Also there
is electric go-kart racing that is fairly inexpensive (~$25 for 3, 10 minute
races).  Evenings there are great restaurants, bars, dance clubs, laser shows at
the Space Museum, street racing for you bravehearts.  It would be a fun, but
very full weekend even starting on Friday night!

Once again, please let me know if you are interested.  Also let me know which
events are of interest and which ones aren't.  I could really use the help of
one of you younger San Diegans (Courtney, Charlie, ;)) to help with the
nightlife events and maybe a web page.  Also, AJ and Quincy, if you could pass
this along to the W3SA and recent west coast gatherings folks, I'd appreciate
it.

Sorry to you folks getting multiple copies of this ;).

Let me hear from you...

Chris,

Did you unplug anything besides the stereo?  Sometimes there are
temperature sensors, etc. under the dash that are tied to the
ignition.  I don't have a wiring diagram available here at work to
look it up, but that would be my guess.  The first thing I would look
for is any loose (or incorrectly connected) connector near the stereo
wiring.

My wife's Honda wouldn't start last month after sitting out in the
hot sun all day.  If she sat there with the door open for awhile, it
would eventually start.  It turns out that there is a temperature
sensor under the dash that became too sensitive.  Her car would start
fine in the mornings or after dark, but not in the afternoon sun.

There may be a similar sensor on our cars and unplugging it may cause
a similar problem, except that getting it cool again won't help.

It's always been my experience that if something is mostly working,
but I "fix" part of it, and then a different part quits working, it
was something I inadvertently did during my fix.  Try to remember
everything you unplugged or disconnected during your installation --
even a ground wire.

Good luck!

David

Damn - that's some inflation!!

The remote that I bought from Bill Seidle's is a two button remote - OMRON
G8D-281M-A.  This remote is identical to the one that came with the car, a
'95 R/T TT.

co-worker with an Eclipse Spyder has. The person who sold it to me told me
that it worked for 3000GTs and would only need to be programed to work. By
that, I assumed he meant the procedure listed at the below website. Still
didn't work. Anybody have any comments on this? I know there are two and
three button styles. I have a 94 and as I understand it, it uses the 3
button. I thought it was the 2 button that was the expensive one...

Chris:

Is the engine turning over?
Could be a dead/low battery -- powers some things, might even turn the
engine over, but not enough juice to spark the fuel.

My new stereo kept switching off and on when the battery got low.  It
wouldn't start, either, until I jumped it.

Is your car a manual or automatic?  Could also be a safety switch in the
clutch pedal (not fully depressed) or gear selector (not in park or
neutral).

Need more info

Subject: Team3S: Engine stalling

I've got what I hope is a simple problem with the car stalling when making a
left turn.  It started happening just after the tranny was replaced and I'm
hoping it's just a loose connection.  Can anyone point me in some areas to
check?

Hello everyone,

Can anyone _surely_ settle a debate - what is the difference between a
sunroof and a moonroof?

Thanks!
