Re: Team3S: What pistons should I buy?
I researched pistons before
placing my order and found Pro Power to be the
cheapest (similar to Wiesco),
they were also stock copies. But I quickly decided
against
them.
Something is fishy about some of the numbers these
piston
manufacturers/distributors gave you. The high compression on
some of them
doesn't make sense if they are really stock copies. For
instance, a .040"
overbore will take an 8.0:1 engine and raise it to roughly
8.16:1 assuming the
CCV remains the same (good assumption if it the piston
retains a common TDC
position and has the same face geometry). This is
a long shot from 8.5:1. To
get all the way up to 8.5:1, the piston must
take up more volume (wrist pin
lowered in the piston towers, a flat top, or
even slightly domed piston etc.).
After doing research for my build-up, I
decided to go with Ross. They are the
most expensive, but I liked the
improvements and cost wasn't the main deciding
factor. I probably
should have thought about pistons a little longer though
since I have decided
to order new ones (larger bore size and perhaps less
compression) and will be
selling the first set soon.
If you're interested in some new in the box
91.1mm Ross pistons (stock bore and
compression ratio), make me an
offer. I will post them for sale as soon as I
place the order on the
new ones. I'm waiting for the piston bore sonic test
results to see how
big I can go on bore size, I need displacement.

Im confused.
N/A's need displacement, WE gain displacement by
using boost.
How is .1l gonna help much? Doesnt seem like something
2psi wont get you.

Re: Team3S: What pistons should I buy?
More displacement is a very good
thing on both NA and turbo cars.
A 93mm bore for instance will raise
displacement by 4.2% over stock (not all blocks
can be bored this
large). Lets say you can safely make 500hp on a stock
displacement
engine with appropriate bolt on mods and high octane fuel.
You will now make ~20
more hp if you can maintain the same boost and temps
(lots of assumptions here). For
many of us, turning up the boost a
couple more psi means the difference between
running safe and knocking our
way to a rebuild. I'll take added power without
raising boost
anytime.
For most, it is not worth the cost for the small increase in
displacement, but if you
have already decided to bore the block oversize, pay
a little extra and have it sonic
tested (determine bore wall thickness) and
bore to maximum safe size. You'll want to
leave a little extra in case
you need to touch up the bore on the next rebuild
(devils advocate) and also
have the head gasket clearanced so it doesn't protrude
into the combustion
chamber. All a matter of how far you want to take it.
If you're
made of money, have GK Systems make you up one of their stroker cranks
and
displace 3.5L with a 92.1mm bore. ($4,400 for the crank alone)

What i did to narrow it down to the

Subject: Team3S: TIRE
concern + noisy sunroof
Hello Everybody,
Two weeks ago I upgraded
from a 93 Stealth Base (5spd) to a new 95 Red
VR4. The car is in
perfect shape. It has 31,000 miles on it. I'm still
shopping
around for a different warranty on it. (Currently - $3,086
for
48mos/48000 miles). The leather is in great shape and so is the
paint.
The car runs great but I have one major concern and one more
minor.
1) Tire related - I have Bridgestone Potenza RE711 245/40ZR18
tires.
These are not available in the US or Europe from the research that
I've
done so far. They are only available in Japan. However, I
noticed SEVERE
cracking of the outside edge of the tires (more on the front
ones than the
back). I am worried about a tire failure because I drive
the car fast
quite often with top speed runs here and there. The tires
are properly
inflated (40 front/ 38 back). Can you guys look at the
following link
PLEASE to give me your expert opinion whether this is normal
for these
tires (if Merrit and some of the other guys that race their cars at
the
track could look at these pictures of my tires I would appreciate
it-I
know you guys stress out your tires more than average). If anybody
has
had any experience with these tires (if you are from Japan), or a
similar
model number, please let me know. Pictures 3*.jpg and 7*.jpg
are the most
important if you want to save some time.
http://www.cs.wayne.edu/~iraicu/VR4tires/
2) Factory Sunroof - The factory sunroof makes excessive noise
even
at 70MPH, let alone 100+. I traced the problem, and I noticed that
the
sunroof does not close all the way. I close it all tha way
initially, but
due to a ~90 degree free play in the heel that raises the
roof, it opens
up a bit after I lock it in the closed position (the inside
mechanism
unwinds itself ~90 deg). I tried to take the mechanism apart,
and I see
where the built in from the factory free play is, but I'm sure
there must
be a way some of you guys figured out how to make it close all the
way.
Maybe I totally have to disassemble the mechanism. The loudness
is
annoying. I wish it didn't have a sunroof.
If you want to
look at my brother's website to see pictures of our cars
(not yet complete)
you can browse at:
http://www.cs.wayne.edu/~iraicu/main_personal.htm
Thanks for all your help.

Well, you probably oughta cut out
those high speed runs right now. I'm no
tire expert, but I wouldn't run those
over 75 mph. I suspect the tires are
original, making them five years old,
and all those cuts and cracks are
from old age. High performance tires do not
age well.
Have you been to your friendly Bridgestone (Firestone) dealer
with this
problem? Bet he'd just LOVE to see
you.

Hey

Now that I know no movement is acceptable,
I am going to redesign the mounts
slightly, since there is some flex in them

when I will get around to doing this. However, I
will have a working

Ask for Gary. I dropped my block off last Friday, so I
really can't vouch for their work
yet. But from what I've been told and
what I saw, I'm not worried. They do some real
trick engine builds
(professional race series etc.). They must have close to ten
RX7s
parked in front of their shop (they are pretty well known for building
rotarys also).
BTW - if you decide to go with the stroker crank, you'll
have to purchase some shorter
custom rods and clearance the block. They
can get expensive real quick, someone on the
3SI board had them quote a full
build-up and it ran to $20,000! Way to expensive for me,
I decided to
use a stock crank and just bore as much as I can. I need money
for
computers, exhaust, turbos, and intercoolers.

amount of
fluid in the transfer case (problem stems from leakage)
Here are the
numbers the dealers will use to determine if you get a new

if you have at
least 180cc (6 oz) he can repair it. BUT...
If you have LESS THEN 180cc THEY

Timing Belt
Timing Belt Cover

Not a synchro problem --- may
just be a shift cable problem. My 5 speed
gives me trouble if I don't hold my
tongue in just the right
position.

If this
is being tagged on by our 3S server, I guess we have to live with it.
But if
they are being added on by list members who have free e-mail
services, I vote
to exclude those members. I am tired of being bombarded by
ads. It seems that
half my e-mail these days is spam.

Thanks
An Update on the cracked tire issue:
Last night I sent an
e-mail out to Bridgestone. I received a BS
e-mail response back within
minutes generated by a computer. Last
night I also called a 1-800
hotline for Bridgestone/Firestone. They told
me my Bridgestone Potenza 711
245/40ZR18 are not on the recall list. I
knew that, but I'm sure you
guys understand my concern about a tire
failure. Anyway, the lady sent me to
an authorized bridgestone dealer to
take a look at the tires, and change them
if they feel like it.
This morning I stopped at a Bridgestone dealer, and
the guy there said the
same thing (tires are not on recal). He said the
tires are perfectly safe
("even at 149MPH+ which is their
rating")-->bologna. The cracks are due
to heat and he called them
"dead rubber" (I think). He could not explain
to me why I have such
early signs of cracking on new tires that still have
80% tread on
them.
I have to be able to talk to someone that can help me. Sorry
to clutter
the list with this problem. Thanks to all those that
responded to my
e-mail on such short notice. I'm still trying to figure
out what to do.
If anyone else has any sugestions, let me know. If you
still want to see
pics of the cracks on the thread (outer corner) of my
tires, go to:

Those ads are coming from anyone who
uses the list via Egroups.
The speedtoys ones are my .sig file (not an
annoying in-yer-face top of

Well..ya.
How OLD are the
tires. The amount of tread means nothing, they will
crack with
age/heat when they get old.

RE: Team3S: Reverse tranny problem Question
I'm not sure how related a
1996 Honda Accord 5-speed tranny is to a
Mitsubishi 6-speed Getrag ... but
after road racing last year in my Accord
(and using gears 2-4 on the track
and 1 and reverse in the pits) I drove
home for 90 miles and couldn't get the
car into reverse. The AAMCO
transmission place (which usually deals
with automatic trannies) gave the
best quality quote (the middle for price,
but very detailed on the labor and
parts).
They could get it into
reverse but as soon as there was resistance on it
(like back up a hill or
stopping and then starting again) the gearshift
would jump out into
neutral. They said it was a bad synchro and since 5th
gear and reverse
are on the same synchro, or spline, they would have to
replace both 5th gear
and reverse gear. About $400 for each gear since
Honda won't sell
remanufactured gears. I did better than that and found an
entire
remanufactured tranny for $1,200 with only 25k miles on it (my 3-year
old
Honda had 90k on it).
Car works great now and I asked for the old tranny
back (I secretly want to
mount it on the Family Room walls like a trophy kill
from a hunt). I have
the input and output shafts at work with me right
now as I took it apart,
cleaned everything with Naval Jelly (removes rust),
and sprayed it with
WD-40 to keep all parts moving.
The tranny from
this year Honda was only used in two years and since Honda
trannys rarely
break it was real hard to find one that was for sale. I
learned my
lesson. A $100 track day turns into a $1,500 tranny bill.
Next
time take a car that is meant for racing and don't break the car.
Hopefully
the 6-speed Getrags are used on all years of 3000/Stealths making
those
easier to find for replacement.

I found a 6-spd tranny that the guy says works fine in

has problems going into reverse. What is the likely
cause and available fix?
Would this be a synco problem? I recall these are
not available.

The funny thing about it is that
if I had a vintage 70's and 60's vehicle I
could make all of the repairs
myself. I could also come up with the spare
parts for a song or
sometimes even less. I just don't relish the idea of
using my daily
driver as a learning process, that and the fact that I'm
lazy. I grew
up around Muscle Car fanatics. Of course if it were a Muscle
Car I
wouldn't be having this problem. The timing belt wouldn't be a belt
it
would be a chain or on some lucky occasions, gear driven. Goddamn
Design
Engineers always looking for a place to save a buck and fine tune
factors of
safety a.k.a. factors of ignorance. Really pisses me
off. %$#^%*(&
I was thinking of just having the bare minimum
fixed and then dumping it.
Of course the bare minimum is still 4k.
Fixing the Valve Guides requires
machining costs as well as parts and
labor. Did I say I was upset?
