Team3S: St Louis Opportunity
Last weekend, whilst in St. Louis, I
happened to spot a rice-boy 92 3000GT
VR4 way out behind Kirkwood Mitsubishi.
It is black and yellow, with
Japanese lettering all over the hood and doors,
yellow wheels, and similar
stuff. Under all the gaudy paint, the body looks
OK. Interior looks OK. It
has a shortened shifter.
Upon further
inquiry, I discovered that it had been towed in and dumped by
the owner, who
lives in Washington, MO. It apparently has a bad motor, and
the owner wanted
the dealer to sell it for him for $6,000. The dealer said
no dice, and told
him to come get it.
For anyone looking for a project car, you might want
to check this out. I
don't have the time for it.
This is all I know
about the car. The folks at the Mitsu dealer late on
Saturday afternoon were
friendly but uninformative.

For all that are wondering what size they are, they are 225/55/r16's and
are
the WS-15 series. I just looked them up and they go brand new for 100

Subject: Team3S:
Brake Caliper clunking?
Hello everyone!
I wrote in before
regarding a clunk in my front left - well here are my
latest
observations:
It is braking related.
If I hit the brake, it will clunk
sometimes, especially when I reverse
directions. And, when at a
complete stop, if I let up on the brake real
slow sometimes, I'll hear the
clunk a few times as the petal is coming
up (yes, at complete stop).
Anyone think my caliper might
be
loose/misadjusted/somethingerother?
Help is most
appreciated!

Yeah you should be able to. There should be a way with a
volt meter to test
it and see if it is good. Look at a shop manual or Hanes
guide for your car,
and it should tell you what pins to test the resistance
on off of the motor.

I've seen this on 60% of
the VR4's I've seen. The caliper set floats in the
cradle, and the end play
is sometimes large enough that you can hear it when
it comes against the
stops. Not a big deal but annoying. I actually brazed
and machined the cradle
for .010" clearance to take care of the problem.

*@(&*@(*&@(*&!!!!!!!
That's not what I wanted to
hear!!
I have a hum that is most noticeable about 3k rpm, seems to fade in
and out going
down the road, hum-HUM-hum-HUM...
and it gets worse after
speeding up or putting torque on the system...
How did you determine that
your diff was 'bad' - from this noise alone or
otherwise?
Thank you so
much!

Why the Ross/GT-PRO of course!
They are 2618 T-61 (like the Venolia)
and can be made to YOUR specs as far as
bore and CR. Brian (GT-PRO)
knows these cars and has probably made some
excellent improvements in
the design. That $440 extra will buy you lots of
satisfaction plus
YOU WILL GET THE ENGINE YOU WANT. Just be sure you have the
pistons
in hand before boring that block.

Subject: Team3S:
Lubricating the output shaft?
While at a race, recently, I was speaking
to a guy who was racing a turbo
Porsche; he also runs a performance shop that
specializes in turboed cars.
He was telling me that he lubricates the
output shaft on every
Stealth/3000GT every time he does an oil change.
He said he uses either
wheel bearing or lithium grease to lubricate it.
Does anyone else do this?
I am coming up to 100K on my car and have never
had any transmission or
transfer case problems, (still running the stock
clutch) and was wondering
if this was a necessary or recommended PM
procedure. The shop manual is
some what lacking in the
transmission/transfer case area and I was
wondering, if anyone has done this,
do you just remove the 5 bolts holding
the transfer case to the transmission
and pull the transfer case out from
the transmission to apply the grease to
the output shaft? If so, will the
transfer case leak oil during this
procedure?
Thanks in advance for you help,
Dave Best

Of course, keep corrosion down
in the splines, as they dont sit in fluid
like a driveshaft splined yoke
would.

What pistons should I buy?
Trevor
Keep in mind that going 40 over
will also increase your compression ratio
a little so you might find yourself
at 8.8 or so.
It would seem that the GT Pro pistons might be the best bet
--- they seem
to be a custom design by Ross and perhaps you could relocate
the piston
pin hole, dish the top of the piston or remove material from the
top of the
piston [ talk to your local expert of course
].

Do you just remove the five bolts that hold
the transfer case to the
transmission to get to the output
shaft?
Thanks,
Dave
