Team3S: Apexi Boost Controller
Thanks for all of the advice,
everyone! I've definately learned a lot. One
more question, I
tapped (tee-ed) off of the current boost guage right off of
the Y-pipe hose
going into the plenum for the boost guage piece. I
completely
disconnected the old solenoid (it had 2 hoses) and put the new
solenoid in
it's place. All pictures that I see for other units still have
a hose
going to the old solenoid and the other outlet/inlet capped off.
That is NOT
how I did it. The 3rd hole in the new solenoid is just venting
to
atmosphere. I'll try to get some pics posted this
weekend.

All the other pictures show it differently because they do it
right and you
did it WRONG! The new solenoid doesn't go where the old
one was, it needs
to go between the Y-pipe nipple and the wastegate
actuators. Yours is
hanging off parallel to that and isn't controlling
boost properly.
Look at those pictures again and re-do it.

If you just substituted the Apexi solenoid for the stock
solenoid, you will want
to use the "normally closed" hose barb. The
reason is, you want to see positive
pressure at the wastegates when the
solenoid is de-energized (this is the "safe"
way). The Apexi wants to
energize the solenoid to allow boost to build. Your
installation is
like the stock installation in that when the solenoid is
energized, it is
open, which allows the positive pressure at the wastegates to
be bled off,
thus causing boost to build.
Good luck with the tuning,
Ken

Re: Team3S: Apexi Boost Controller
All of the other pictures were from
differnt brands of units. According to
these instructions, I have a
hose coming in (from the H adapter) and a hose
going out to the wastegate
(which I assume is where the stock boost
controller's other hose went to
without tearing everything out). So, I did
look at the directions, I
did as they said and I'm checking with people who
have actually installed
this model if this was how they did it. This unit
is different from
others that I've seen. If you have some information or
help other than
"look at the picture and do it again", it would be
greatly
appreciated.

Boost! Please Help
Has anyone had this problem before? In
1st gear my boost
will hit 13 lbs then fall immediately to 6 lbs and the
turbos whistle
more while spooling than normal (Boost leak?). However, in
third and
fourth gears the boost will maintain 10-12 lbs. I tried a bleeder
and
while 1st gear did not change much 4th gear was holding above 16
lbs
so I let off to avoid any damage. I then tried 3rd gear from ~4800
rpm. The
boost hit 16 lbs then fell off in the normal manner. The boost
drop in first
is so rapid it feels like the throttle lifts. Please, any help
would really
be appreciated.BTW, the car is stock except the boost
gauge, custom
cat-back(not sure but cats may be gutted), and bleeder
that I used to try to
see how it would affect the
problem.
Thanks,

Brakes, Help!
Hi Guys,
I am going to attempt for the first time to
do some brake work myself. I
am going to install steel brake lines,
porterfield pads, and properly
bleed the system. I am not too exited about
jacking the car up on 4 pods
and entering the vehicle to depress the brake
pedal in order to bleed
the system. I have avoided doing work on jacks for
mostly safety reasons
and to avoid any silly injury to the car. I saw the
jacking instructions
on John Adams site. Anyone have any suggestions or safer
jacking
methods?? Can the brakes be done one wheel at a time (install lines
one
wheel at a time, start car and bleed one in correct order, but one
wheel
at a time. I know this will be time consuming with the motor
running,
but does anyone do it this way??? Thanks for your help in
advance.

Does anyone have these that has ran them at sea

(15psi w/ 15Gs) than are normally allowable w/

has them and runs 17-18 psi in them, but
isn't that only equal to 15 psi for
we sea level people? I mean 17 + 13

the only upgrades in the

Re: Team3S: HKS intercoolers
Sorry, I do not have the HKS intercoolers.
The HKS intercoolers I
have seen pictures of don't look that much bigger than
the stock
ones. I bought mine from GT-Alley and they are twice as large as
the
stock ones (see pictures at my web site) and required relocating
the
oil cooler as the old space was gone. I'm not sure the thinner air
up
here matters much in a test though because the "cooling" air going
over
the IC is also thinner (meaning there is less mass to remove
heat from the IC
fins).
The ICs and pipes I bought where made by Brian LaFuente for his
368R
turbos. That turbo setup has the potential to flow over 1200 cfm.
So
my IC setup may be a little large for only 15Gs. My solution
will
eventually be to get "larger" turbos. :) But in retrospect, if I
had
more knowledge of these cars in 1997, when I was rebuilding the
engine
and upgrading stuff, I may not have gotten the particular IC
upgrade I did.
They are not a problem, but the overall air capacity
of the 2" pipes (30%
more cross-sectional area than stock) and ICs
(about twice that of stock)
just means that there is that much more
volume to pressurize when boosting.
Of course once that volume is
pressurized, the added efficiency of the larger
ICs is beneficial. If
you are interested, I have some links to technical
discussions of IC
function and theory on the Tech page at my web site. Before
you
upgrade, you may want to measure the pressure and temperature
at
various points in your IC system to see if it is worth upgrading
for
your particular driving style.

4" a 4" stripe is very very thin indeed, and maybe you
should look
somewhere around 10-11" if a single stripe, maybe even a touch
wider. A
pair of 8-10" stripes also looks good I think...
