Team3S: RE:Tensioner installation errors, etc.
Stephen C. Kempf was
asking for signs of timing belt slippage.
If you have access to a
bore scope look at the pistons my engine had half moon shiny marks on the
pistons right in the valve reliefs. Carbon will build up on the valve
reliefs as well as the rest of the piston so if it is shiny the valves have been
hitting. Depite this my vlaves looked perfect until I had a vlave job then
the valves would only grind on one side because they were slightly bent.
If you see shiny marks on pistyons the heads have come off for a valve
job. I have no idea if the pistons will survive but I am replacing mine
anyways.
How it happened:
One day 18,000 miles after having the
dealer replace the timing belt and tensioner I noticed that the power in the car
seemed to be non-existant above 3000RPM. I turned the radio down and
noticed the the valve clatter was louder thatn normal. I was only a mile
from home so I turned aroundy 91 3000GT VR4 to limp it home. by the time I
got home I was sure I had thrown a rod because the clatter was so loud.
Dropping the oil pan showed that the crank and rods were fine so I knew there
was head damage.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what these
results might suggest (if
anything) in regard to valve damage
resulting from the cam timing errors.

A good comrpessio nand leak down tells you mroe than the
boroscope
information. Often a smal bend in the valves are not visible

Yes, this tool is very imprtant and it
took me two monts to get here !!!

They both just reinstalled the tensioner

I
exactly know what they have done wrong. There is also an "automatic"
belt
tensioner that provides constant tension to the belt when installed.
This is
getting expanded when removing it and the mechanioc has to slowly
push it
pack before isntalling. So the installed it with the tensioner fully
out and
just torqued the extenter down. Of course this is only a matter of
time
until tension goes too low !

Oh, interesting ... one
works on the car without a manual ?? He should pay
you for education

As said before, the boroscope is good to check out if there is
any damage to
the walls or pistons before opening the heads. If the valves
are able to
close properly can only be said after the comrpession/leakdown
test. So
whats the results of them ? They are probabyl wet due to the wrong
timing
you had and just force them to install at least new plugs as they may
be
fouled (depends when they have bneen replaced).
It is not necessary
to change the oil more often than every 5000 miles
unelss you race it a lot
under extreme conditions. When the timing belt is
realigned properly the
compression test must show the good values. A leak
down test is done with the
cams off (no a big deal) and the piston at BDC.
We were able to hear where it
blew out the air then !
Again, good luck

Check out my pictures on

much oil pushed back into the intake by too much
crankcase
pressure.

Team3S: Warranty?
What do you guys think about aftermarket warranties
from companies like
www.warrantybynet.com? Are they worth
the money? Is there a better company?
My quote was like $1,800 for three
years coverage. I know I'm going to have
my car for at least 4 more years
and was just wondering if any one else has
one of these warranties or what
anyone has heard about them. As always,
THANKS GUYS!

Warranty?
The problem with aftermarket warranty companies is their bad
habit of denying
claims. The policy has a list of covered items and if it
isn't listed then it isn't
covered. For example most policies exclude the
SRS stuff [ air bags, sensors,
controllers, etc. ]. They will deny claims if
your car is modified. They have the
right to send an inspector to approve the
work --- you could sit in West Elbowpit,
Nevada for 5 days waiting for
approval on the repair of a blown engine. Try to
understand the fine print
before buying.
