Team3S: The Shootout!
Wow....
That pretty much sums up my
experiences at Norwalk this weekend, but
if you want to read more, just keep
scrolling!
A lot of fun and interesting things happened, as well as a few
crappy
ones, let's start with all the good ones. We all met up with
the
"caravan" going from California to Ohio, probably about 20
people,
maybe more. Put faces to names and cars, intimidated more than a
few
"normal car" drivers, yet kept to what I think was a "safe"
speed
limit of about 80-85mph for the most part (one of the years we
did
this, speeds were higher, and I didn't like that as much).
It was
an awesome sight to see that many turbocharged monsters on the
road all at
once, both DSM and 3/S. Jack Tertadian(sp? hey, I finally
got to pronounce it
right, so if that's spelled wrong, sue me :) is
one of the coolest "fast"
guys I have ever met... I won't say names,
but there are others in the "10's"
and they can be down right
rudy-poo's when it comes to conversation. I really
didn't even plan on
racing the stealth there, as I didn't have much as in the
way of mods,
and some of the other 3/S's were more souped up than
mine.
Somehow, I ended up being lined up with Jack (and losing of
course),
and it felt like a dream... wtf was I doing, racing the 3/S
legend?
hehe. Somehow I edged out another 3/S owner and this is where
the
chips fell. I had done about 6 runs that day, starting with
a
13.2@100mph. My previous best with my once smokey turbo situation was
a
13.5@100mph, so I really wasn't expecting much in the way of
improvements,
since the mods were still all the same. I was semi happy
with the 13.2
considering these as the only mods,
STOCK exhaust, but gutted cats.
Active exhaust is stuck half closed.
STOCK turbo's, no porting or anything,

Magnecor's and stock .032 gapped plugs
Hallman

S-AFC
450cc injectors
1g DSM BOV
and
K&N FIPK
I had brought my datalogger, so I hooked that up to the car
and
laptop, and started tuning the AFC like a mad man ... well only in
2%
increments. After about 5 runs, and massive tuning of the AFC, I
gained
6mph, and went down to a 12.8 with 1.74 60' times. My o2
voltages are STILL
in the .92 range, I had ZERO to FIVE counts of
knock (7 is where the ECU
starts to care about timing), and my AFC
settings are pretty
much;
1000rpm = -20%
2000rpm = -17%
3000rpm =
-12%
4000rpm = -8%
5000+rpm = -3%
I couldn't believe I was
hitting 3 12's with just those mods! A lot of
others were surprised too...
(no, I'm not tooting my own horn
dammit... well kinda :). I talked with Todd
Day, and he told me that
there is no way I was seeing 36 degree's of timing,
something about
the stealth ECU and how it's timing output is offset compared
to the
DSM ecu. Well, with 0 knock most of the time, my car was
happy!
Well, I'm bit by the speed bug, so maybe my next mods will be
a
downpipe, and removing the (in)active part of the exhaust. I think
those
are my bottlenecks now. This is so fun! I was so happy with the
12's, that I
went up to the announcers booth, way up in the stands,
and after catching my
breath after about 20 minutes, told the guy that
I wanted to give out CD's to
all the 3rd place people... funny thing
was, the announcer knew me, and
already had a CD, so he added some
nice words to the announcement. I was
flattered by the responses
people gave me regarding the CD's.
I
couldn't sell any (well, 2...) since everyone seems to have one
already, but
hey, at least everyone seemed to know who I was, unlike
previous shootouts.
We need to have more 3/S people join in on the
fun! The second day was pretty
cool too, with the autoshow and the
autox. I tried my hand at that too, but I
think I will give up...
because I was half a second slower than Josh Jones @
Conicelli's
RENTAL SATURN!!! :). It also doesn't help when you can't
downshift
into first at speed (my stealth has to be below 1mph to do
that).
Well, that's all for now, maybe I will write more when I have
the
time. All in all, thanks guys and gals for a wonderful experience
in
Norwalk, next year I hope to have both my stealth and my 91 AWD
talon
out there (wife will drive one of em). I hope more 3/S people
will
make it, I think this was the largest showing yet! (for both types
of
cars, DSM and 3/S).
Oh, my bad experiences? My $600+ Kodak DC280
was "taken" from my hood
when I was moving some stuff, and I got very lost in
the middle of
Ohio looking for Buschurs shop... with only 1 gallon (perhaps
less) of
race fuel left. Why did I get lost? I was following a 91 GSX,
and
assumed he was going there too... NOPE, after finally pulling a
very
scared man over, I was shocked to hear him say "who's buschur?
what's
club DSM?"... OH NO!!! I was in the middle of BFE, and the corn
wasn't
gonna turn in to ethanol magically anytime soon! I got back by
pure
instinct... and a large reserve tank :) .
What's the fastest
anyone has gone with the same mods as above?

Re: The Shootout!
DSM Shootout 2000 is Done, and I think it was
great!
We almost TRIPLED the number of 3S cars compared to last year,
with 8 cars
racing; there were some others there too, not racing! The
weather was
great, no rainouts. I think Joe Gonsowski has a tally of
the ET's and
such for the 3S cars...engineers are good at organizing things
sometimes
:) I don't have all the names, chime
in you guys!
There were some impressive times-for-mods-done including
Jason Barnhardt
(?sp) with ~12.4 @ 108 on stock turbos (all are from memory
to be
corrected by the people or Joe etc)...Vineet Singh doing 12.8 and
proving
what benefit datalogging can be especially O2 readings (wish I had
that,
more later
:( Anthony Ng with 12's
(see message), I can't recall
all and would probably get them all wrong so
will leave to the people.
None of us did poorly, we all made a good showing,
showed the flag well.
It was heads up racing on a pro tree (one yellow) for
everybody, but the
times were still great and managed well. Vineet and
I were in the finals,
I took it but had more mods than anybody else. I
decided my trophy was my
free Budweiser can (going to mark my name on it :)
and Vineet had the
Pepsi for 2nd, and all 3rd place finishers for all classes
got a CD ROM
shop manual from our own Vineet Singh! Next year we'll
have trophies from
Dave Buschur (not that we need them!) since we WILL be
there and in
NUMBERS!
All the 3S guys were of course great people,
enthusiastic and helpful; I
hope I got to talk to (or bore) everybody enough,
but race days are always
sorta hectic for me.
My Wisconsin group went
to the Cedar Point gigantic amusement park
Saturday (not the Autocross) so
can't give a report on that...Sunday was
the IDRC Import Shootout and this
year was way bigger than last year, a
big crowd, many show cars, some FAST
race cars etc. My Atomic Motorsports
partner Paul Martens with his 94
Supra TT was in the "Street 8" quickest
shootout, qualified 4th with an 11.35
@ 140 mph (!), he had done an 11.00
before, all bests. Got beat due to
a blown fuse in NOS, but had done an
11.xx @ 133+ no NOS. Of course the
fastest was a DSM doing best 10.12
(John Shepard). My car would have
qualified, with a one-pass 11.5/119mph
with 50hp NOS, but it broke that
run. I thought it might break; it had
lost about 8-9mph off its
125mphNO NOS times from a few weeks ago, and
was using alot of oil (1
qt/225 miles!) so was IN PROCESS of breaking, but
I HAD to go race, I had
yelled at everybody else to go and heck if I was
going to weenie out on
it. I think it holed a piston; we'll see how bad
it is soon. Oh
well, it was going bad and would've needed changing
anyway, this just
diagnosed it for me ;)
Like I said, I need some of that datalogging
stuff :) My Jumptronix O2
gauge is in the box, had no time to
install. Stupid, dumb and/or lazy,
take your pick...
Anyway, I
know there were some 3S in the bracket classes and due to my
break and
finding transport for car (had driven there from Wisconsin) I
don't know how
everybody came out in the end.
Arty, Vineet, Matt, Oskar, Jason, Anthony,
Aaron from WI, Mike Mahaffey (I
think), etc etc are ALL planning to be at DSM
Shootout 2001--So are YOU!!
Pencil in your calendar, it is always mid
July!

With alot of ingenuity, the
passenger side could be converted to express
down (meaning touch the button
once, and it goes down) If you do it like
the drivers side, it is a
mechanical switch with a relay to throw a small
motor that pops the switch
out back into it's original place. I suppose you
could wire it so that
it is an electrical deal also, but that is beyond me.
You could probably
convert it to an electric sunroof, but it would mean
removing the existing
one entirely, which also means alot of customwork.
The traction control
looks badass, although I'm sure it costs a pretty
penny, and wouldn't that
money be worth more to you spent at driving schools
and on the track learning
how to drive. That way you know how to drive, not
the car helps to
drive for you....

Yup, you did
very well! The 12's you got are great times for the minimal
number of
mods that you have!
> I couldn't sell any (well, 2...) since everyone

> already, but hey, at least everyone seemed to know who

Since I got 3rd place, I won
one of the 3/S CD's. I bought one as the first
"mod" to my car, so I
donated mine to Oskar who doesn't have one yet. :-)
Oskar is now
required to bring his car next year.
It was great meeting everyone out
there and I had a fun time despite the
lackluster performance of my
car. Once I put the race fuel in and turned up
the boost for my first
run, it pretty much destroyed the clutch for hard
launches. I was
reduced to running very poor 2.1-2.3 second 60' times, and
spun the clutch a
few times during my 1-2 shift. Still, the trap speeds
were between
107-109 (excluding a run where the clutch slipped a ton in
second) so I think
the performance of the car is getting there, but I just
need to figure out
what clutch to use and improve my launch technique.
Should be good for low
12's or maybe high 11's at a more local track. I was
afraid of breaking
the car so far from home (and thought I may have damaged
a ring or piston),
so I'll reserve the serious attempts for Rock Falls
Raceway which is quite a
bit closer to home. I only ran 18-19 psi of boost,
so there's more
power potential there as well.
I need to pull the plugs and check out the
cylinders with a compression test
to make sure everything is okay (I had some
top-end stumbling problems on
the race fuel), probably replace the plugs and
decide what to do next.
Probably the MSD ignition box and a new clutch for
sure.
I took about 3 hours of video, so if you were there and would like
a copy of
it I will try to edit something together and make copies.
I'll post
something later after I get it going...

Yes,
An air compressor with impact wrench
(good one) or a lot of muscle. You
will also need a large socket (i think
32mm) Amateur Zone (among others)
has them. Technically you are supposed to
use a NEW axle nut, lock washer,
and cotter pin too (although i
didn't)

Congratulations to everyone who ran at the Shootout this
year!!
It was sure nice to see a larger number of 3/S cars this
year. Hopefully
next year we will see an even larger number. I
was not able to bring my car
this year due to other commitments (2x12 hrs
driving from Minnesota), but
decided to fly out and take in the action.
I'm sure glad I did as it was
just as good as last year. It was nice to
meet all of you that showed up,
with and without cars!
Other that the
already described 3/S action there were of course several
fast DSMs.
The real fast cars were Sean Glasar's 9.8@148 front drive Mitsu
Mirage, and a
rear drive, 4G63 powered Honda CRX. This car went down the
1320 in an
amazing 9.16 @ 136.
Vineet, I have run several 12.6 passes with similar
mods to yours.
Actually, since Jack T. did not run his car at last
years shootout I was
able to win the 3/S class with the following time
slip:

know you mentioned your car didn't

The racelogic system is
actually amazingly cheap considering. I think it
was around £500 when I
looked last. How come it costs £3,000 or more as
a factory option from
manufacturers???? :)
I read a complete review on it fitted to a Honda CRX
turbo in Max Power
magazine (ok, I'm not proud of it but I bought a copy to
read about a
nitrous kit fitting company). It has a launch button for traffic
light
tearaways and they couldn't match it for takeoff no matter how
they
tried without the button so it really works.

Really?
What issue..and
if they have a WWW site where I can get a former copy Id
love
it.
Would seriously consider on the Celica GT-S.
Yannow, it
would take 12 months to get real-live data like this from the
starnet
list..

It was a good while ago now as
I was considering it for my MR2 Turbo and
that's gone over a year now. The
car on the cover was a CRX with a turbo
mod. Unfortunately, I did the big
cleanout about 3 months ago and all my
old stuff is now in magazine heaven (I
needed space to move around my
apartment).
You should call them
directly and speak to them about how the system
works and see if they've done
a GT-S before. I spoke to them about the
GTO and they were up front and said
they hadn't done one but that they'd
never had a problem with it working with
any car they've done.

Ive sent a request for more
data for my Supra.
However..I did point out a stupid ugly error of
thiers.
They claim that by using thier unit as a launch rev-limiter
(which IS
cool) you can just nail the gas to say 4k rpm, and watch boost
climb.
*bzzz*
Wrong. We'll see what they have to say
about my comments on that.

Yep. That's about right. They
get 150bhp cars up to 210bhp with an air
filter and a chip (non-turbo that
is).
I think they feel they need to cater to their normal readers so they
let
them claim what they like.
You know the kind. Ford invented the Escort
Cosworth for them as that's
the way it would have ended up looking by the
time they their type was
finished with it anyway so Ford decided to cut out
the middle man. :)
I check the cover for anything of interest and have
bought 4 or 5 copies
for various articles (1003bhp Supra vs 1007bhp Skyline
etc).

I got the MAX some years ago
in the UK and I must say that it is one of the
most stupid mags I've ever
seen. The articles are even worser than the ones
in Turbo Mag (they
installed a fuel controller and said it controls boost
and so on ...) and
are more sound-and-look related than anything else. The
good things are the
so many adds as one can see what parts are available in
Europe ... for
really high prices !

Wrong. We'll see what they have to say about my comments on
that.
What's wrong with that statement? The stutterbox on my
Eclipse built 12 psi
of boost at 5000 RPM. Works great... If they
just change the rev limit,
it'll work fine. You can do the same thing
with the MSD DIS-4.

Ive

Im wanting
