Jack,
I would love to show up
but I am in Seattle and I wonder how the hell I am
going to drive my VR4 all
the way there. As it is, I have alot of miles on
it and I just don't know how
I can show up. Believe me, I have spoken to
Errin so many times about going
to these events BUT they are always
somewhere in the mid east or at least
somewhere FAR far away from the
Pacific NW.
Any suggestions? When is
this DSM shootout and where will it be held?

SHOOTOUT -- WE ARE WEAK!
Why might we not have CLASS at DSM shootout
this weekend?
I thought we did too. I will have to "make some
calls"...
problem is, we have such a WEAK showing with numbers
of cars,
they have been charitable offering us a whole class
when 3-6 cars come, in an
event with like 300 cars+.
I am surprised we can get 10-25 cars for
"gatherings"
going for pizza etc which is great; but for a 3 day
SUPER
event with 3S/DSM drags day one, Autocross or Car
Show (depends on
your preference) day 2, and an
ALL-IMPORT IDRC drag race day 3, we get
only
a few. I REFUSE to believe we have only lazy doctors who
buy
the car to be POSERS not DRIVERS, like I usually
think of anybody in a
Vette or Porsche I ever see on
the street. (I can say that cause I'm a
?lazy doctor ;)
WHERE ARE the various SHOPS? I NAME
my friends
at Altered Atmospheres, GT Pro, Dynamic Racing;
God willing, Matt Meyer will
be there in the future, passing
me by along with everybody else!
I name my
personal friends Bob Fontana (marriage is NO
excuse :), Brad Bedell,
Barry King (OK he was there
before), "Amahoser" on 3SI board, Steve Gula,
John
Christian (was there before, loves to race, beat me once
at the
shootout '97!), ALL you guys on the 3SI boards,

OK, Roger Gerl has the
minor inconvienience of a whole

so can't go but you bet they WERE going, they ARE
coming CAR-LESS, we
have 2 rooms
with 7 people (as I was the last 2 years I went
anyway
and had GREAT times!)...potato guns in parking
lots, tech sessions, great
Mitsubishi people, getting the
scoop on new technology and techniques,
hobnobbing
with the bigwigs, etc! R A C I N G !!
ALL these
claims of "fast times at Ridgemont High", "come
here to get your fast parts
and be cool", but the ONE

NO-SHOW
EVERY YEAR. I am NOBODY, with
no business/clientele to impress
(Atomic Motorsports is
more a State of Mind than a business :) I travel
a day to
get there. What, it might take TWO days for some
to get
there? Ooooooh, Bluto, that's HAAAARD!
Why might we not have a
class? BECAUSE WE ARE
WEAK AND LAME, might THAT be the reason?
Yes
this IS a challenge, the glove-slap-to-your-face

answer? With
anger and a F*#! YOU TERTADIAN I will be there,
or with
a whiny excuse and "gee, what a long message,

our cars sinking into mediocrity and the

Oskar and I were both there at his

for trophies and he didn't have
any, and he said he'd mail them to us. I
didn't particularly care
whether I got one or not - and didn't feel I

This is my response ;) to

First off, Buschur Racing is currently
selling the new SAVC-R for $450. His
normal price is
$475.

I have
lived with the new Apexi SAVC-R for almost a year now and it holds boost
very
well. On my '91 VR4 with FIPK & stock turbos & exhaust, I have
boost set
as:
0-400RPM 1.0 kg/cm^^2
4000-5000 1.05
5000+
1.00
Boost stays rock solid until 4800 RPM or so, then gradually begins
to fall off.
It doesn't decrease to 12 psi until about 5400 or so.
This performance is no
better or no worse than other electronic and good
manual controllers as the
stock turbos are the determining factors
here.
Like most anything, equipment that has more features/functionality
than the norm
will also require more parameters and attention during setup
and configuration
than the norm. Once you have it properly configured
and functioning, it can be
a set and forget if you desire.
There are
several things you must do in order to extract the best performance
from the
SAVC-R.
1) Leave learning mode always enabled
2) For normal
driving, you must connect to the RPM wire. If you wish to
occasionally
monitor IDC, use a toggle switch (to allow you to select between
the RPM and
IDC wire) and disable learn mode.
3) You must understand how the unit
"learns" and functions.
#1 and #2 are self explanatory. #3 is much
more difficult to address but I'll
try :) to clarify it's operation.
The SAVC-R learns one "curve" of solenoid
valve duty cycle settings.
Each of eight (user specifyable) RPM bands has it's
own duty cycle value
which it uses to achieve the specified boost for each RPM
band (values
learned in my current curve are 40% duty cycle for 2500-3500 RPM
for my 1.00
target boost, 47% for 4000-4500 for 1.05, and 64% for 5000-5500
for
1.00). The higher the duty cycle value, the more the solenoid
cycles thus
interrupting the flow of pressure to the waste gate actuators,
thus allowing
boost to build. This curve is constantly maintained
whenever requirements for
learning are met. You want to be learning
constantly so that the curve can be
updated for atmospheric, elevation,
vehicle, etc., changes. The requirements
for learning are:
1)
Throttle position close to WOT, above 85% I think
2) Boost pressure DOES NOT
EXCEED your specified setting
3) "Learn Gear" is enabled for the gear you are
currently in
4) "Start Duty" is set to zero for the gear you are currently
in
#1 is controlled by your right foot. #3 is basically a "learn
mode on/off
switch" for each gear. #4 is a setting for each gear that
is applied to the
curve and allows you to increase or decrease the
implemented duty cycle value.
I'm not sure if it is applied to the whole
curve, or just the first RPM band,
but it allows you to control boost
spiking. #2 is self explanatory and is where
many folks get in
trouble. When specifying boost, one can also enter a "start
point" duty
cycle value. Many folks have the tendency to use a very high value
for
the start point, thus inducing overboost in the first RPM band resulting
in
no learning until the overboost condition subsides. As you can see
above, my
beginning point is only at 40% and my turbos are fully spooled by
3000 RPM or so
in 3rd gear. I've heard some folks say they set the
beginning point in the 60%
range! (most probably because this is a valid duty
setting for the old style
Apexi where there is only one duty setting instead
of a curve of eight). If
you're not learning in the first RPM band, the
following seven may not be
learning properly either. I'd wager that
both of the problems above from
Francis and Henri are due to incorrect curves
because of incomplete learning.
It is also important to learn a curve
that is suitable for your driving style.
If all of your boosting is done in
1st & 2nd gear stoplight racing, then your
learning should be on for gear
two, and you should consider turning off learning
for gears 3+ (since RPM
reach redline so quickly in 1st & 2nd gear
accellerations, the curves
learned from these gears will be very different than
curves learned in higher
gears). If on the other hand you like to do your
boosting on a race
track, freeway, or Autobahn, you probably want to turn
learning off for gear
2 and keep learning enabled for 3+. (Of course you can
have your cake
and eat it too by learning both curves, one for setting A,
another for
B).
The Apexi SAVC-R is indeed a superb boost controller. If anyone
needs more help
with tuning and learning a good curve, please feel free to
contact me for more
info and help.
Good luck and happy
boosting,
Ken

Re: Team3S: leaking differential
Ken,
This happened to me when my
91-VR4 was still under warranty. I believe problems
started when a full
service lube shop checked the fluid and cross threaded the plug
( the casing
is supposedly aluminum). Dealer pulled out the plug and determined
that
the case was stripped. It took like 2-3 weeks for them to get a new
housing
and return the car to me. If no one has touched your car, its
probably the seal and
you could DIY as long as you're careful with the
threads.

Totally - it isn't even the
racing so much as just hanging around with
people that have the same
admiration for their cars as we do. Going to a
"normal" event, I'm
surrounded by big-block Chevys and Fords beating me
silly or Hondas running
16's and feeling happy about it. The DSM Shootout
provides a place
where everyone is on common ground and can relate and learn
from each
other. A lot can be learned from the DSM camp, as well as us
sharing
some experiences with them.
That's what it is all about... The
racing is just an "extra" to get some
adrenaline going. :-)

Hmm, what's the wear rating
and wet stopping rating on them?
I hate to see people go cheap on tires
when they are the only thing keeping
the car on the road. Siping will
get you better straight-line stopping in
snow/ice conditions, but will reduce
cornering ability on dry pavement as
you'll get more tread squirm.
You'll sacrifice cornering for braking - but
hopefully you knew that already
and live somewhere where it makes a
difference.

Which clutch are you considering getting? I
purchased a GTPRO street spec
clutch and have had nothing but problems with
it. Brian told me that it was
not meant to be launched on AT ALL!!
after I had problems with it. It's not
like I constantly raced it
either. It's ridiculous to think that you are
not allowed to launch
from any stoplight whatsoever!! I would stay away
from the StreetSpec;
any other one may be okay, but if I were you I would go
for the new RPS
clutch.

Team3S: Warranty Information
Hi Everyone,
I own a 1992 3000GT VR-4
with 72,000 miles on it. It is stock and has had
all major service
performed at the appropriate times. The car runs great.
I would like to
find a company that will supply an extended warranty for
this car. Some
of the companies that I have contacted say 'no' to the turbo
model, some site
the age of the car as too risky, and others will cover the
car but if you
read the material completely you see that they do not cover
gasket
replacement and the potential problems that leaking gaskets can have.
Is
there anyone who does cover this car with full respect to the
gaskets,
transmission, and the rest? The turbo's are quite reliable,
and I am not
concerned with this issue as much as others.
Bob Forrest
was putting together information regarding this issue. I will
be happy
to forward all that I have learned so far. In the meantime I would
like
to know if there is a reputable company that I can use?
Robert Frye at
1sourceautowarranty.com was not able to help. Platinum
corporatation
offers a warranty, but verifying claims is a problem, and my
mechanic did not
like the vague reference to gaskets. Allstate will cover
the car up to
five years of age.
Thank you,
Patrick

I have lived with the new Apexi SAVC-R for almost a year now
and it holds boost
very well. On my '91 VR4 with FIPK & stock
turbos & exhaust, I have boost set
as:
0-400RPM 1.0
kg/cm^^2
4000-5000 1.05
5000+ 1.00
Boost stays rock solid
until 4800 RPM or so, then gradually begins to fall off.
It doesn't decrease
to 12 psi until about 5400 or so. This performance is no
better or no
worse than other electronic and good manual controllers as the
stock turbos
are the determining factors here.
Like most anything, equipment that has
more features/functionality than the norm
will also require more parameters
and attention during setup and configuration
than the norm. Once you
have it properly configured and functioning, it can be
a set and forget if
you desire.
There are several things you must do in order to extract the
best performance
from the SAVC-R.
1) Leave learning mode always
enabled
2) For normal driving, you must connect to the RPM wire.
If you wish to
occasionally monitor IDC, use a toggle switch (to allow you to
select between
the RPM and IDC wire) and disable learn mode.
3) You
must understand how the unit "learns" and functions.
#1 and #2 are self
explanatory. #3 is much more difficult to address but I'll
try :) to
clarify it's operation. The SAVC-R learns one "curve" of solenoid
valve
duty cycle settings. Each of eight (user specifyable) RPM bands has
it's
own duty cycle value which it uses to achieve the specified boost for
each RPM
band (values learned in my current curve are 40% duty cycle for
2500-3500 RPM
for my 1.00 target boost, 47% for 4000-4500 for 1.05, and 64%
for 5000-5500 for
1.00). The higher the duty cycle value, the more the
solenoid cycles thus
interrupting the flow of pressure to the waste gate
actuators, thus allowing
boost to build. This curve is constantly
maintained whenever requirements for
learning are met. You want to be
learning constantly so that the curve can be
updated for atmospheric,
elevation, vehicle, etc., changes. The requirements
for learning
are:
1) Throttle position close to WOT, above 85% I think
2) Boost
pressure DOES NOT EXCEED your specified setting
3) "Learn Gear" is enabled
for the gear you are currently in
4) "Start Duty" is set to zero for the gear
you are currently in
#1 is controlled by your right foot. #3 is
basically a "learn mode on/off
switch" for each gear. #4 is a setting
for each gear that is applied to the
curve and allows you to increase or
decrease the implemented duty cycle value.
I'm not sure if it is applied to
the whole curve, or just the first RPM band,
but it allows you to control
boost spiking. #2 is self explanatory and is where
many folks get in
trouble. When specifying boost, one can also enter a "start
point" duty
cycle value. Many folks have the tendency to use a very high value
for
the start point, thus inducing overboost in the first RPM band resulting
in
no learning until the overboost condition subsides. As you can see
above, my
beginning point is only at 40% and my turbos are fully spooled by
3000 RPM or so
in 3rd gear. I've heard some folks say they set the
beginning point in the 60%
range! (most probably because this is a valid duty
setting for the old style
Apexi where there is only one duty setting instead
of a curve of eight). If
you're not learning in the first RPM band, the
following seven may not be
learning properly either. I'd wager that
both of the problems above from
Francis and Henri are due to incorrect curves
because of incomplete learning.
It is also important to learn a curve
that is suitable for your driving style.
If all of your boosting is done in
1st & 2nd gear stoplight racing, then your
learning should be on for gear
two, and you should consider turning off learning
for gears 3+ (since RPM
reach redline so quickly in 1st & 2nd gear
accellerations, the curves
learned from these gears will be very different than
curves learned in higher
gears). If on the other hand you like to do your
boosting on a race
track, freeway, or Autobahn, you probably want to turn
learning off for gear
2 and keep learning enabled for 3+. (Of course you can
have your cake
and eat it too by learning both curves, one for setting A,
another for
B).
The Apexi SAVC-R is indeed a superb boost controller. If anyone
needs more help
with tuning and learning a good curve, please feel free to
contact me for more
info and help.
Good luck and happy
boosting,
Ken
