But they didn't warp :P

It's a good thing that you were prepared for them.

The only solution out there for the warping problem is some form of upgraded
calipers and rotors.  (94+ setup would be an improvement if you have
aftermarket wheels.)

I have/had porterfields.

9 laps at Thunderhill cracked em from the hub out, on the Big Red upgrade
even.

My powerslot rotors have gotten warped after less than 10,000 miles.
Man, I am ticked off!  I think I spent $250 - $300 for those things.
Not any better than stock (probably worse, from the stories I've heard
about the darn things breaking!)

So, I guess I'll forget about the gimmicky powerslots, and get a set of
porterfields.  Only $87.50 each at www.porterfield-brakes.com.  Does
Porterfield sell direct to the public?

Question:  how much does the cryogenic treatment cost, and is it
worthwhile?  Also, how about the cross-drilling?  My driving is about
50/50 city/highway, occasional high speeds, no track or autocross.

Subject: Team3S: Overboost Problem Solved

Just an update . . .

Julian's recently reported overboost problem
of 1.5-1.8 bars of boost on stock turbos was
recently fixed by yours truly.  <smirk>

A bunch of things contributed to the problem.

It did indeed turn out to be related to the
wastegate actuator hoses.  One of the hoses
to the H-connector was leaking air (because
it was too big), one of the hoses from the
H-connector to the stock actuator was not
sufficiently plugged up and thus leaking air,
and (worst of all) the Y-pipe nipple (which
provides boost to activate the wastegates)
was completely plugged up (mostly by the
recent ceramic coating of the Y-pipe).

Once these things were straightened out, the
overboost problem completely went away.

So I was wrong in my guess that it was (at
least partially) caused by an over-rich,
retarded timing condition.  :)  That idea had
already started to seem pretty unlikely to me
anyway given the distance between the engine
exhaust ports and the turbo.  Occam's Razor
comes through once again.  :)

Bad bad BAD reaction !!!

A correct reaction would have been to (pick your own)

a) Step on the Gas, and use the power to go through the turn (race
technique)
b) Leave the gas EXACTLY where it is (or lift it by no more than 5 %, and go
through the turn (ahem...street race technique)

c) clutch in (that is, fully depress the clutch) (that's the best everyday
driving technique)

And, finally, Bad reactions !

d) Sharply take the foot off the throttle...this will suddenly "engine
brake" the car, create an unwanted
weight transfer, will unbalance the car, and may result in a nice "waltzing
time"

e) The worst possible reaction would be to step on the brakes !

Do d) or e) on a wet/snowy/rainy road, and you'll be searching for a new
car.

>> and the AWD grabbed hold and brought the car back in shape.

Well, the AWD did nothing in your case...

>>I had to saw on the steering wheel a bit but I am not used to this yet.

May I suggest that you (yeah, ALL OF YOU) go to a performance driving
school.
This is the BEST performance upgrade you can do....upgrade your driving
skills...it'll cost you
a couple hundred bucks ('bout the price of a boost controller, or ONE perf
tire),
will last a lifetime (YOUR life), and probably save a LOT of money (like in
....how to NOT crash a car)

I agree... I am actually looking into driving schools because I know that
as good a driver as I am, when it comes to racing techniques, I do some
dumb (but natural) things.. Such as getting my VR-4 sideways 2-3 times by
accidentally letting off the gas in a turn.. (AHEM! DONT DO THAT!) and a
few other things I wont mention...

Im getting much better with the "hit the gas harder if your slipping in an
AWD car" thing but after 9 months of owning the car, Its STILL way
unnatural.

Anyone have any ideas on good cheap classes (like $500... i dont want to
spend thousdands of dollars)

Hey, I've got a 91' VR4 and am going to install my Blitz Dual Turbo

direct me to or tell me:
a) Which hose do I want to tap for boost pressure guage? I am guessing
it should be on the intake plenum somewhere.
b) Where would you recommend putting it? I was thinking in the storage
area between the seats.
Thanks in advance!

No, it is very accurate. If you have a strange behaviour then it's a problem
with the sender or your wiring. BTW, how do you know if it is accurate or
not ???

The fuel pressure hose at the rear side of the plenum.

In the DIN panel from Blitz right below the DSBC. But if you want to open
the armrest every time to see the actual or peak boost .... well there are
many places as the thing is so small.

I agree.

Gets tiring BEING a good driver, and listening to all the 'road warrior'
stories..by the grace of God alone do half the guys out there in sports cars not
kill themselves thinking theyre good..or worse.."They read a performance book".

You local SCCA region probly holds autox events for about $20-35 at -least- once
a month.

And yes..you can learn a lot by learning to autox well..the heavier the car..the
better.

Hey I did that install a while ago... If you want you can do it the way i
diid and have been VERY happy with (along with recieved MANY compliments
about).

1) Pull out the center console vent
2) on the left side of it, cut/break off the two bottom plastic bars that
go across it (i think there are 5 on each side?) and slide it in there. I
used hot glue to put it in so that it would be easy to take out when I
wanted to. Although some sort of apoxy would be much stronger.

There is also plenty of room for routing the wires and hoses into that
area. Although I regret that you have to break off the piece in back that
controlls the opening and closing of the vent so at least half of it is
always open. But that does keep your turbo timer COLD and will probably
help it last longer.

I'll put pictures on my web page later
tonight.. www.south-park.cc/~diranged/VR-4...
